“It happened so fast; I wish I could have more memories.”

That’s how Bill Gentry described opening for country music superstar Martina McBride this month at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth. Blake Shelton and Luke Brian were also part of the show, the last stop of McBride’s “Shine All Night” tour.

Gentry, a 42-year-old Carrollton native, was scheduled to open for McBride in December, but the performance was rescheduled for May 1. He was thrilled about the experience, particularly meeting McBride in person.

“She was very sweet,” he said. “Her eyes are even more striking in person than they are on camera.”

He said the majority of the “energetic” crowd had already arrived by the time he took the stage at 6:30 p.m., though he could see only half-way to the back of the arena. Despite not being able to see all the faces, he had the crowd on their feet by the end of the performance.

“If I don’t get the audience on their feet with their fists in the air by the end of the show, I feel like I haven’t done my job,” he said.

Gentry said everyone, from McBride down, complimented his performance.

“We’re so proud of him,” said Gentry’s sister, Carrollton resident Mimi Gentry. “He did a great job and was very well received.”

A performer with 12 years of professional experience, he reached No. 62 on the Billboard charts with the release of his first single last fall. The video for his follow-up single, “19,” was filmed in his hometown with Carrollton residents and remained No. 1 on the website yallwire.com for four weeks. He anticipates his third single and first full-length CD will be released this summer.

“We’re in the big leagues now,” he said. We’ll just see how well we do in the big leagues.”

Gentry, who grew up hearing his father’s stories about World War II, considers himself very patriotic. He said “19” is considered by some to be a song about war, but he doesn’t see it that way.

“We came up with the idea of sacrificing in general and thinking about who has sacrificed for you,” said Mimi Gentry.

Bill Gentry said his family has been a source of help and support to him in his career. One of his brothers, Scott Freeman, plays guitar for him.

“I have a loving, supportive family and good friends in Carroll County,” he said. “I plan to die and be buried in Carrollton. It’s my home.”
