The Klingons are the most dangerous enemy that the Federation faces, and yet the Klingons regard the humans and their Federation to be more of an economic rival than a bitter enemy. The Klingons had actually been allied to the Federation in more wars and for more years than it had been at war with them. That changed with the collapse of the Organian Ceasefire and the subsequent Klingon Invasion that left half of the Federation in ruins and most of the pre-war Star Fleet in the scrap heap.

The Klingons are, in some ways, more of a mystery than an enemy. Myths about the Klingons are rampant and most of what the average Federation citizen (and most of Star Fleet) “know” about the Imperial Race is either wrong, incomplete, or overly simplistic.

Despite propaganda from their enemies, the Klingons are not particularly bloodthirsty. On the other hand, they will not hesitate to attack a militarily relevant target in a civilian area. In addition, the Klingon mindset concludes that civilians working in military industries are effectively military.

Any study of the Klingons must include an understanding of their history, their concepts of meritocracy, their continuing battle against their own corruption and inefficiency, their internal struggles (often against their own paranoia), and their government in order to understand just what makes them what they are.

There are many surprises in store.

The first is that most members of the Klingon Empire are not in fact Klingons at all, but a dozen races such as the Dunkars, Zoolies, Slirdarians, Hilidarians, Cromargs, and others. These “Subject Races” are often considered slave labor by the Federation, but are in fact willing members of the Empire (even if the Klingons never entirely trust them). More than one Federation Marine has been startled in combat to find himself fighting a seven-foot bear-ape or a six-foot lizard, both wearing Klingon insignia.

Another surprise, although it should not be, is that the Klingons and Federation are not perpetually at war. Prior to the General War, Klingon merchant ships were as likely to call in Federation ports as those of “friendly” races, and every year tens of thousands of Federation citizens paid hard-earned money to travel to Klingon planets for sight-seeing or amateur archaeological expeditions.

While everyone in the Federation knows about the Klingon Deep Space Fleet and its manta-ray-shaped warships, not many realize that the Klingon Army is actually several times as large, but is mostly used to defend Klingon planets against foreign invaders.

While the Klingons are a great race of warriors, citizens of the Federation might do well to realize that the Klingon Empire did not materially expand in the half-century before the General War (it actually shrank with the loss of previously-captured territory). Regarded as ferocious warriors who never surrender, the Klingons in fact lost part of their Empire to the Tholians (who never gave it back) and while never accepting the loss, were unable to reverse it. There is one planet inside the Empire that was so hard to conquer that the Klingons in fact gave up and asked – nicely – if the inhabitants would sell them mineral ores and provide mercenary soldiers for their Marines.

Reproduction happens in the usual humanoid way, with the female carrying the baby (twins are considerably more rare than with humans) for a gestation period of seven months.

The characterization of Klingons as a brutal warrior race is simplistic. There are two social castes: warriors and civilians. Virtually all Klingons encountered, including starship crews, Marines, etc., will be of the warrior caste. Klingon youths must take special training and pass a series of tests to become warriors, and while there are no formal barriers to the children becoming warriors, few show any interest (although the military finds enough recruits to fill its ranks, even in wartime). It is traditional for sons of warriors to follow in their fathers’ footsteps, although such heritage will not make the passage through the ranks any easier.

HISTORY

11 000 BC: Gorns are transported to their three homeworlds (and to the Paravian homeworld) from a planet lost to history. This is done by an unknown race designated the "Lizard Kings" in their histories.

10 576 BC (Date Appoximate): An asteroid impact devastates the homeworld later known as Paravia. A few Gorns survive and evolve into the Paravian “Screaming Space Birds From Hell”. Over later centuries, these find fossil Gorns they assume are demons.

430 BC (Date Approximate): An asteroid impact stops the development of the Klingons on Klinshai and reduces their iron-age planet to a desert wasteland. The last surviving pockets of Klingons (in the last remaining areas where agriculture is possible) become warring city states, a condition that lasts for 1500 years, during which technology makes relatively little progress.

1770: The Old Kings take the Klingons into their service as starship crews. Over time, they take other races into similar service.

1916: The Old Kings return their Klingon starship crews to Klinshai, also known as Qo'nos (and other starship crews to their own home planets), abandon some of their obsolete or inoperative equipment in various locations, and leave for parts unknown. At about the same time, the Spirit Kings disappeared, leaving the Hydrans in possession of low-technology starships.

2007: Klingons build chemical-energy rocket boosters and primitive space capsules, and use these to reach the obsolete ships left in their system by the Old Kings. Within a few years, the Klingons have been able to make some of the old ships operational. Klingons, using star maps drawn by the last of the Klingons who served on ships of the Old Kings, contact the first of the other Old King subject worlds (the Dunkars) and begin to use them as subject race crewmen, just as the Old Kings had used both races.

2047: The Klingons encountered another starfaring race and went to war with the Lyran Star Empire. This war continued for four years until the Lyrans had to sue for peace, to concentrate on the Hydrans, whom they had accidentally attacked during the war. Relations with the Lyrans remained hostile for the next 50 years.

2218: First Contact with the Federation, Klingon Empire, sometimes called The Empire of Steel. They have been at war with all their neighbors at one time or another, and are the primary power of the Coalition formed with the Lyran Star Empire and the Romulan Star Empire.

2222: The war with the Federation ends.

2224: The first generation of Shield generators are installed on Federation and Klingon starbases and outposts. Both the Klingons and Federation cannot shrink the size of generators down enough to fit them on starships. Shield generators of this era was 210 meters wide and 210 meters in height, it is half the size of the biggest starships built so far.

Artificial Gravity technology is now finally able to generate gravity equal to 70 % of the Klingon Homeworld.

2230: The second generation of Shield generators can now be installed on Federation and Klingon starships, as both the Federation and Klingons can now generate the massive amount of power needed to run Shield generators.

A Cold War starts with the Federation, mostly small scale battles. Klingons trying to outrun Federation ships in the Klingon Neutral Zone.

2245: Klingons scale back their war effort against the Federation as their resources are stretched to the limit. The USS Gato (NCC 1670) was modified and equipped with the first Photon torpedoes in service.

2254: Klingon attack fleets returns to full strength and continues their war against UFP. Fusion torpedoes and laser cannons are replaced by photon torpedoes and disruptors, becoming standard on all Klingon vessels.

The Romulans begin building the new generation of ships known as “the Hawk series.”

Federation begins “refits” that add improved systems to their ship; other races follow suit. Destroyer Kublai intercepts the Klingon D6 Devastation, which had been harassing shipping.

2271: Andromedans build a base in the Lesser Magellanic Cloud and begin conquering it. The war with the Klingons takes a toll on UFP resources and personnel. Available starships are spread thin and far apart after the Klingons defeated the Federation invasion of the Narendra corridor. Both Federation and Klingon fleets are greatly weakened.

It is now called known "The General War" started between the Romulans, Klingons, Federation, Gorn, Hydrans, Lyrans and Kzintis. The General War was the largest and longest conflict ever fought in the Milky Way Galaxy.

On the Tholian border, the Federation destroyer Ares is destroyed. Excalibur rescues the crew from Tholian slavery. The Federation Excalibur, the Klingon D7C Darkslayer, the Tholian CA Arrrakk, and the Orion raider Gossamer Phoenix defeat the extragalactic Juggernaut. The Darkslayer is destroyed, but Korath is given the new Direslayer and a Federation commendation. Korath has, however, sworn revenge against Federation Captain Gray for calling him a coward during the battle.

2272: On 17 January, Juggernaut Beta begins destroying Federation bases. The fast cruiser Eagle attacks the Juggernaut but is driven away. The Juggernaut eventually attacks the planet of Arcturus and is destroyed by Eagle and the other ships on 23 January

2273: The Organians disappear. Several races are blamed for this, but none know the true situation. While legend has it that the Organians prevented the Klingons and Federation from fighting, in fact they were simply the mediators for any number of incidents and potential conflicts. While they helped to avoid war, their supposed “power” to prevent a war is mostly a myth

Klingons declare war on the Federation and attack the border with hundreds of ships. (This had been planned before the Kraknora colony and the Organians disappeared.) The Federation cruiser Hood is reported destroyed by three Klingon cruisers, but the saucer returns to Federation lines, 3 years later.

2284: Hard-pressed by the Federation, the Klingons convince the Romulans to declare war on the Federation and launch a massive attack. Federation Commodore Stocker discovers the invasion and launches a pre-emptive attack with Lexington, catching a Romulan squadron unprepared and badly mauling it. Another Federation squadron is ambushed at Denebola during treaty negotiations with an Orion base. The old cruiser Republic fights two groups of Romulan raiders.

The Gorns ally with the Federation. The General War has now reached virtually complete escalation. The Grand Alliance (Gorn-Federation-Kzinti) fleets battle Coalition (Romulan-Klingon-Lyran). Hydrans have co-belligerent status with Grand Alliance but are not formal allies.

Alliance forces recapture large areas of Federation territory, reaching the Tholian border and cutting off contact between the Klingons and their Romulan allies. The Tholians tentatively accept membership in the Grand Alliance.

2285: Survey ships discover the first Andromedan base on the Rapid Transport Network. This is the turning point of the Andromedan War. The Galactic Powers had never understood how the Andromedans were able to shift their ships around the Galaxy so quickly, and had never realized just how few Andromedan ships there were.

The Grand Alliance and Coalition forge an alliance. All races begin hunting for RTN bases, but this is very difficult as space is vast and the electronic signatures of these bases are faint. To effectively hunt for a base, a ship with special equipment must be operating alone, and if it finds a base, is likely to be destroyed before supporting ships can arrive. Since Andomedan RTN bases can be disassembled and moved around easily, bases are often relocated before other forces can arrive.

Klingon Emperor Karrelli dies of old age. By this time, Kellish and Korgar have come to terms and Kellish becomes Emperor. Korgar is given a greater role in the empire, but this stops just short of making him co-emperor. The height of Andromedan power is reached.

2286: Andromedan power begins to decline sharply as the Rapid Transport Network is heavily disrupted. The Galactic Powers launch “Operation Unity” in an effort to destroy the primary Andromedan base in the Lesser Magellanic Cloud. It has taken years of work to build the pre-fabricated bases and fast cargo transports that this Operation requires.

2288: Final defeat of Andromedans as Operation Unity destroys the Desecrator (the starbase in the Lesser Magellanic Cloud). The Andromedans leave the Alpha Quadrant to begin a 300 year journey back home. The General War ends.

An accurate description of the typical Klingon starship would be heavier forward shielding and weapons, weaker rear shields, excellent combat manoeuvrability and good firing arcs. Klingon ships are meant for battle, so they include fewer un-essential systems. Most Klingon ships are specialized to cruise at medium range, and snipe with their quick-charging disruptors.

Historically they have had a well balanced fleet comprised of both smaller scout type vessels and larger battlecruisers and battleships. Like the Federation they maintain a mixture of both long serving - and hence well proven - designs and newer more advanced vessels.

Prowler (Stealth Recon)
In a similar role to its namesake, it is used to gather electronic intelligence, and its primary role is to stay hidden while safely gathering such intelligence, not to charge into battle, as that would invariably be an irreversibly fatal tactic. Because of its tactical value and potential to change the outcome of any given combat situation, every Klingon battlegroup has at least one Prowler assigned to its ranks.

Crews assigned to a Prowler is considered the best of the best. One of the Empire's Fastest ships, the Prowler class is every bit as fast as the Sovereign.

Pagh (Heavy Cruiser)
One glance at the B'rel class cruiser is enough to see the intention of its designers. Virtually identical to the Bird of Prey in layout, the B'rel is three times the length of the smaller ship, putting it firmly into the cruiser bracket. The extra size has been used by the designers to provide an extra torpedo tube plus four emergency tubes in place of the Bird of Prey's one of each, replace the Mark 8 disrupters with Mark 10 models and install a secondary armament of six Mark 8 cannons. The thickness of armour across the ship has been more than doubled and the shield system has been considerably upgraded. Other systems have also been uprated in line with the ships cruiser status. Internally, the deck layout has been accommodated within the scaled up design by simply putting three decks in the place of every one.

The B'rel class vessel entered service in 2327, and has remained in the fleet ever since. An extensive programme of refits has kept them front-line vessels for some forty years, although the Vor'Cha class Attack Cruiser has become the vessel of choice in this area. In the 2360s the B'rel mostly patrolled friendly areas, and was a common sight to Federation Starships during this time. With the Klingons war with the Cardassians and the brief conflict with the Federation the type was brought into conflict with Federation Starships for the first time, where it performed reasonably well.

Bird of Prey (Scout / Light Cruiser)
The most successful design of vessel in history, the Bird of Prey has been in service in larger numbers over more subtypes for a longer time than any other class in known space. First fielded as the D11 class in the late 2270s, the ship was built from the start to fill a variety of roles. As a special operations ship she could use her cloak to penetrate Federation border defences and attack lightly defended targets such as sensor outposts, communications relays and cargo craft, creating confusion in advance of a Klingon fleet attack. She was also a natural scout ship, ideal for locating and tracking Federation fleets from under cloak. During the long period of tensions between the Federation and Klingon Empire, many D11s operated as raiders, cruising deep inside Federation space to pick off occasional lone vessels or outposts.

In design the Bird of Prey conforms to Klingon norms, with a single torpedo tube at the extreme forward point of the hull. The command centre is above this, with crew quarters - such as they are - located in the 'neck' section directly aft. The rear of the ship comprises the engineering compartments and a small cargo bay. A pair of wings carry small disrupter cannon at their tips, while an emergency torpedo tube provides a backup to the main armament. The wings allow the B'Rel to operate in an atmosphere and landing gear is fitted, the first Warp capable craft known to have this ability.

Today, the D 18, 18th generation of BoP continues to be famous and dangerous in Hunter Packs of 6 or more.

K'T'Inga Class (Fast Cruiser)
The K'T'Inga class battle cruiser was fielded by the Klingons during the 2270's to replace the D7 class as the Klingon's premiere combat vessel.

One of the Empire's Fastest ships, the K'T'Inga is every bit as fast as the Sovereign.

Negh'Var class (Battle Cruiser/Heavy Cruiser)
Built during the 2360's, the Negh'Var was designed for unparalleled protection and firepower; her sheer size was intended to allow her to carry an armament powerful enough to overwhelm any opponent, present or future. She emerged from the shipyards as the largest vessel ever built by the Klingon Navy, at over 2200 meters long.

The main armament of the Negh'Var comprises a pair of huge disruptor cannon, the largest such weapons ever built. Although they are the most powerful mobile weapons on any Alpha Quadrant ship, the weapons are able to fire over a very limited arc. Since the Negh'Var herself is not exactly a manoeuvrable ship, the intention of these weapons seems to be to deal with the heavy shielding associated with large space installations, fixed defensive systems and planetary arrays. Engaging other vessels falls to the 18 Mark 12 disruptor cannon distributed across the hull; while these are only a fraction as powerful as the Mark 18 weapons, they are at least equal in firepower to the Starfleet Type 17 phaser array and hence among the most powerful in service.

The Negh'Var is equally well equipped for defensive operations. The shield systems are based on those used in the defence platforms protecting the Klingon home world, and the hull itself is constructed of a high density armour plate. As with recent Federation designs, the structural integrity field is rated at more than triple the normal standard, allowing it to considerably reinforce the armoured hull and provide a powerful backup protection.

Although its primary role is in destroying fixed defences and enemy vessels, the Negh'Var apparently has a considerable secondary role in landing and supporting troops. Some ten thousand can be carried on board, and the ship has over thirty personnel transporters and large numbers of landing craft to carry them. She can carry supplies for up to ten days of surface fighting, and if necessary can support the ground forces by both orbital bombardment and warhead transporting.

Launched in 2371, the Negh'Var is currently serving as the Flagship of the Klingon fleet. Her first combat action was during the Klingon-Cardassian war, where she was responsible for destroying six Cardassian vessels, twenty three defence platforms and overwhelming the planetary shields on eight Cardassian worlds. She thereafter fought an action at Deep Space Nine, where she was able to breach the stations shields for long enough to land several hundred troops. She has since seen considerable success during the Dominion war, adding to her fearsome reputation.

Vor'cha Class (Heavy Cruiser)
The Vor'Cha class was originally the Klingon response to Starfleets Ambassador class design. Intended to be significantly more powerful than the Ambassador, the ship had something of a troubled beginning. The project was approved in 2332, and immediately ran into design problems; the Klingons experienced problems with the manufacture of the Warp Coils, a problem Starfleet would later encounter for itself during the development of Galaxy and Nebula class.

High density armour plating was added around the ships Warp Core, nacelles, and around the weapons platforms. Vor'cha is a very powerful ship with very strong shields and weapons.
