Spirit Kings appear as tall humanoids of a slender build. They have pale, mottled skin, and are hairless. They are androgynous and once reproduced asexually. Now they are infertile. They have high, resonant voices.

They are energy-based beings, composed of what they refer to as "core energy": their skin being an artificial façade that they can generate after sampling the DNA of other species. In their natural state, blue-purple energy can be seen coursing through their transparent humanoid form. There are some individual differences: Older Spirit Kings appeared more pink-gold, while the Young Ones was often more blue-white.

Spirit Kings have, breathtakingly long lifespans, 2 500 to 3 000 years was about average for the Spirit Kings. When the Spirit Kings and Old Kings split into two species, Old Kings lifespans were shortened by two thirds, while Spirit Kings lifespans were extended by a factor of 200. The Old Kings have lifespans of approximately 20 years, which suggests that, at least at the time of the split, Spirit Kings lifespans were on the order of at least 12 000 years, or possibly more.

It was said that no Spirit Kings has killed another through violence in millions of years. The only Spirit Kings to have acted directly to kill another was Anitalaselva, who murdered another of his kind and absorbed their energy. "Killing by proxy" was nevertheless allowed.

The Spirit Kings are an offshoot of another alien race, the Vusiatavus. While there was some debate as to the exact events and their sequence, some members of the Vusiatavus race broke off to devote themselves to the pursuit of spiritual perfection, which eventually led to a state of existence as pure energy. The Spirit Kings started out as a cult in pursuit of immortality. The first Spirit Kings was able to successfully take a significant portion of the life energy of another of his race, greatly increasing his lifespan. Other members of the cult followed this practice, eventually becoming beings of pure energy. Their actions sparked the war between the Spirit Kings and the remaining Vusiatavus. This divergence led to the speciation of the Vusiatavus, producing the Spirit Kings and the warlike Old Kings. Conflict between the two branches of the Vusiatavus family has raged ever since (with the Old Kings largely taking the upper hand). The two species despise one another: the Spirit Kings deride the Old Kings as "bloodthirsty heathens with no respect for life", while the Old Kings consider their more philosophically-minded cousins to be weak, arrogant cowards. The final split between the two was believed to have occurred roughly eight million years ago, since that was how long the war has been going on between the two races.

At some point, another, separate species called the Kimera bonded with the ancestors of the modern Spirit Kings and Old Kings, irrevocably changing them. Though to precisely what extent was not made clear, it has been established that the Kimera passed down a vestigial energy organ, known as Shaqarava to both the Spirit Kings and the Old Kings. As a result of this "gift" even more specialization occurred as the Spirit Kings found it difficult to control the darker aspects of the Shaqarava and the Old Kings did not. This resulted in the original formation of the Commonality, in order to pacify the Shaqarava and render it dormant.

Spirit Kings share a partial collective consciousness, known as The Commonality, which serves to create a telepathic link between all Spirit Kings.

Though several "homeworlds" have been referred to by the Spirit Kings, Old Kings and Vusiatavus, this may be the original planet where their biological ancestors evolved. The planet has at least three large natural satellites, Da'an mentions that there are four. The fourth was a small body captured by planetary gravity within Spirit Kings history, or an artificial construct. Upon the Old Kings' arrival, they attack the planet and wreak massive destruction, killing the bulk of the Spirit Kings population.

The Spirit Kings disappeared around 400 years ago, leaving for parts unknown. It is not known why they left.

The Old Kings are large and muscular beings with a vaguely reptilian appearance. Unlike the androgynous Spirit Kings with whom they share a biological ancestor, the Old Kings have two sexes, with both males and females engaging in combat.

The surface of the Old Kings homeworld is quite rocky, with cities or industrial complexes spread across their home world.

The Old Kings still exhibit the shaqarava, an energy-channelling organ that has been dormant in Spirit Kings for thousands, if not millions of years. This indicates that the Old Kings likely split from the Spirit Kings species some time after the Kimera interfered with their species' evolution. This split likely happened at least eight million years ago if not longer since that is about how long the war has been going on.

When the Spirit Kings and Old Kings artificially split apart, both species lost important elements of the physiological make-up. The Old Kings, while able to reproduce freely and rapidly, have tragically shortened lifespans. Upon death, Old Kings combust: this may be a problem caused by an inability to control the energies of the shaqarava. Another theory is that when the split between the two races occurred, the Spirit Kings stole much of the Old Kings' core energy to lengthen their lifespans. This lack of core energy causes the Old Kings to overheat and kills them.

A woman giving birth requires that the father uses his shaqarava. After an apparently normal pregnancy, the child is born in a flash of light, appearing quite suddenly outside the womb.

Old Kings retain an undetermined measure of the "core energy" that makes up Spirit Kings physiology. While they do not seem to be energy-based beings like the Spirit Kings, it still exists within them.

The Spirit Kings describe the Old Kings as being a bloodthirsty race, but this is only a very basic description of a sworn enemy. While most of the Old Kings seen are certainly aggressive, and often employ violence as an expedient solution to a problem, they will not hesitate to use a non-violent method if it will achieve their goals. They are also shown to care deeply about their family and race. It should be noted that almost all of the Old Kings are part of the Old Kings military, and so are not necessarily representative of the race as a whole.

Old Kings, like the Spirit Kings, are said to not kill each other, and view killing each other in wars and in crimes as horrific.

The Old Kings government is referred to as an Imperium. Given that the Old Kings race has waged a successful interstellar war with the Spirit Kings, it seems likely that the Imperium is, was, a well-organized government. The general impression created is that the Imperium is an aggressive organization lacking compassion, as it is shown that the Old Kings have destroyed outright many worlds that have allied, wittingly or otherwise, with the Spirit Kings, in accordance with the Old Kings desire to wipe all trace of the Spirit Kings from the existence.

There is a peace movement within Old Kings culture. It is mentioned in that episode that some members of the Old Kings have cooperated with Spirit Kings to find a solution to their biological problems at undisclosed times in the past. The impression is made that cooperation dates back at least several centuries.

Old Kings technology is crystal-based and highly adaptive. The Old Kings deploy probes to gather information, but also as offensive weapons, as probes have consistently shown themselves to be capable of withstanding extremely heavy fire.

Old Kings starships come in a variety of designs, the most powerful of which appears to be the Sokara-class cruiser. These ships have armaments powerful enough to destroy the surface of entire planets. There are several of these fearsome vessels in service.

The Old Kings disappeared around 400 years ago, leaving for parts unknown. It is not known why they left.

The Vusi'atavus race are the progenitors of the Spirit Kings and the Old Kings. They are in effect "Energy Vampires"

Vusi'atavus appear as humanoids. However, they have one major distinction; laser-like claws that protrude from their fingers. These are used to drain the life force of sentient creatures. This is their method of feeding. The Vusi'atavus, unlike their Spirit King counterparts, appear to be highly emotional and sexual beings.

The Vusi'atavus species as a whole encountered the Kimera at some ten million years ago. The Kimera allegedly altered the Vusi'atavus, transforming most of them, though the colonies in the Seraris Regions remained unaffected.

The Seraris Regions colony on GC 161 was forced underground by asteroids three million years ago where they lay dormant in stasis chambers until they are resurrected.
