Many many moons ago, three brothers were born in the two-leg cageplace. (Known to the two-legs as a 'shelter'.) Their mother, who was brought in only weeks before, told them the tales of the legendary Four Clans: Thunder, Wind, River and Shadow, who lived under the guidance of the great StarClan. It was to these clans she was journeying to when she was caught, hoping for a better life for her kits than the life she lived as a loner. She never made it there, but she wanted her kits to find the clans and live happily among them. The three brothers escaped late one evening, leaving their mother and the comforts they knew behind as they traveled into the woods. They never reached those clans. Three young kits couldn't make that long journey on their own. They settled themselves in the woods, surviving as best they could. And for awhile, things were fine. But as they grew, they discovered other cats in the woods, who were living on their own as they were. It was decided that they should start their own clan for these strays, since they realized they would never find the legendary four. But the three toms could not decide who should be the leader of their clan, and eventually they split up, setting out to establish their own territory and create their own clans. Thunderclaw recalled an abandoned two-leg structure he had uncovered on a hunt once in his kithood. A barn in a midst of a meadow -- it was perfect. He began the MeadowClan, and it thrived as cats wandered through, opting for the protection of a clan with a roof over their heads and plenty of prey searching for the abandoned seed left behind by the two-legs. Other cats had heard of the legendary four as well, and were able to provide more insight into how a clan was to function. Warriors were titled, apprentices were taught, and a medicine cat was trained. The agreement was made that the three clans would meet every full moon at Tricorners -- the very place the three brothers had raised themselves at. And so the clans thrived, and attempted to ignore eachother's existance aside from the monthly meeting. They were finally living the dream their mother wished for them, even if they had parted ways. But peace could not last forever. The leaders began to get greedy, hoping to expand territories by taking from the neighboring clans. War was inevitable, and the lives of many cats were lost in the fight. Finally, the deputies chose to hold a meeting of truce even despite the lack of full moon, and agreed upon one thing: that their leaders needed to step down. The war had done no one good, and the brothers held too much strife between them to allow the clans to exist in peace. The rest of the clan cats agreed, and the challenges to the leaders were issued. Realizing the errors of their ways, Thunderstar and Lightningstar stepped down peacefully, allowing their deputies, Ivyclaw and Slashstripe to take their places. Quakestar didn't back down as peacefully, however, and his deputy, Sandburrow, was forced to fight him for the right to the clan. He succeeded, leaving Quakestar's ear torn as a reminder of what he had done. With Ivystar, Slashstar, and Sandstar in power, the clans thrived. Things were relatively peaceful between the three, and life continued on through the seasons. The leaders were later successed by Hawkstar, Tidestar and Spiderstar. Further into their leadership, a leafbare hit the area hard, leaving the clans to search for prey outside of their territory. On one of these patrols, Kitewing, Hawkstar's mate, was killed by a monster on the firepath. Hawkstar, who witnessed her gruesome death, was devastated by the tragedy, and fell into a state of mental illness. He was deemed unfit to lead the clan, and seeing as his deputy had passed on -- and he himself was unable to select a new one -- his eldest daughter, Sparrowwing, took the title of leader. Sparrowstar is the youngest of the clan leaders thusfar, but is guiding the MeadowClan successfully. |
