The replacement of Suzumiya Haruhi

At the behest of the Email I am making a few suggestions on what could potentially replace Haruhi when its over. If anybody wants an official summary of a series there is always Wiki or ANN, so for the time being I'll throw in my 2c and my summary.

-Gunslinger Girl: This is apparently what you get when you combine guns, young girls, the Italian government, and cybernetic enhancements. From what I have seen it combines it looks pretty good. From what I hear it actually has quite a bit of depth to it in the sense that it isnt people just getting killed but involves some question of morals and the like. That said I'm mostly in it for the firearms...

-Gundam 08th MS team: YES, I did just suggest something out of the Gundam franchise. In all seriousness though this series does a very good job of standing on its own and presents the the Mobile Suits not as invulnerable killing machines (see: Gundam Wing) but as things that are very vulnerable if they are not piloted with the requisite amount of skill. Much more of the focus is placed on the actual soldier than on the whole political space opera thing, so not knowing the whole Gundam backstory will not hurt you.

-2x2 Shinobuden (AKA Ninja Nonsense): This is a completely, let me stress completely, over the top comedy. Think Excel Saga but maybe with the energy level amped up and a bit more up to date (2004). Contains lots of crude jokes, nonsensical humor and things of that nature. This show is not subtle about its jokes, but it works and is very funny IMO.

And... A show that may contain enough fan service to meet a years requirement all on its own.

Strike Witches: I almost feel guilty suggesting this, but at the same time I cant help but do so. I ended up watching this accidentally over the summer (read: watched first episode and got hooked) and it ended up being very good, despite what may appear to be the obvious pretense. I'll say what I always say about this series, it contains a nice plot, good back stories for the characters, and good attention to detail on things like the firearms, compiled together you get a very solid series.

If I had to use mathematical equations to describe this show then: If E = Elfen Lied (cause I have seen it), V = Violence factor, F = Fanservice Factor, and P = Plot, where all letters by themselves are equal to Elfen Lied itself, then; Strike Witches = E*.2V*2F*.9P

Several shows I havent scene and thus dont get a summary unless somebody post one up or PMs me. For now though it is at least good to have everything in one place.

Rozen Maiden - 12 ep

Baccano! - 13 ep

Moyashimon - 11 ep

Mononoke - 12 ep

DearS - 12 ep

xxxHolic - 13 ep

NieA under 7 - 13 ep

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi

Cromartie HS

So there you go, suggestions on a possible replacement. If anybody has a better summary of the series I listed (GG in particular) post it and I will edit it in.

Hey, and first off thanks for replying! Too often our emails go unresponded...

Of those, just based on your summaries, 2x2 Shinobuden sounds like the most apt. replacement for Haruhi (just looking at it from a genre respective; an over-the-top comedy makes a good replacement for an over-the-top comedy :-P). Anyone else have thoughts/opinions on this?

Most of the episodes of 2x2 are on youtube, watch the first and see what you think, it basically sets the pace for the rest of the series. BTW, the ones on youtube are the english dub. HOWEVER, the dub is really, really, good, probably one of the best ones I have seen/heard. The OP gets a little messed up as a result of the dubbing process IMO (the new VA replaces the original VA's spoken lines during the intro with less than ideal results), but everything else is more or less perfectly representative of the JP version.

EDIt: If you want the videos from the youtubes that I was referencing you will need to search "ninja nonsense".

I'm excited to see something described as a pumped up version of Excel Saga. Can't wait! ^_^

Well, I saw a bunch of good ones last weekend --- even if we don't watch any this year, they're good to keep in mind for next....

Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei (Goodbye, Mr. Despair) - suicidal teacher, class full of (mostly) girls with random issues, kind of reminded me of Azumanga Daioh, but a lot more messed up. This quote sums it up pretty well:

"No one would dare kill themselves on such a nice spring day! You're just making yourself taller!"

Also, this one is only 3 episodes (maybe good for whenever the next party is?) but I just saw the Kujibiki Unbalance OVA -- yes, really -- last weekend, but I wouldn't mind seeing it again if anyone needs more filler :)

I jotted down a list of 12-13 episode things. Too lazy to dig up summary links atm... but I'll throw them out there so people can maybe look them up.

Rozen Maiden - 12 ep
Baccano! - 13 ep
Moyashimon - 11 ep
Mononoke - 12 ep
DearS - 12 ep
xxxHolic - 13 ep
NieA under 7 - 13 ep

*shrug* Figured it couldn't hurt to throw out a few more titles.

2x2 Shinobuden sounds like it would be good but I want to see Hellsing. Gotta love vampires! :P I don't know how many episodes it has though. :ph43r:

I believe Hellsing was done 4 years ago... we try to never repeat Anime, and never within 4 years (otherwise poor Seniors would be stuck with a Freshman year repeat!)

Actually, I dont really consider it fanservice, but a lot of people do I think, which is why I used it as a comparison. They quickly equate nudity (for whatever reason) to fanservice. And you have to admit, there were at least one or two scenes where that was the case. I very much enjoyed it though, so dont think I am hating on it.

It's still got nothing on Strike Witches though. The service in that can be so over the top I cant help but start laughing hysterically, not to mention the occasional subversions are amusing as well. I give the series a lot of credit for knowing what it was and ding a good job of it. hahaha

Here's my 2 cents:

Genshiken = down to earth comedy

Haruhi = General bizarre / anything-can-happen

Gun x Sword = Dramaticy / actiony

Gurren Lagann = Over the top Epic Adventure

Champloo = all around bad-ass

I like the way our current line-up works. If we can find a series that has a similar vibe to Haruhi (bizarre, whacky, etc. ), then we can keep the balance we have. I don't know many series, but something like NHK would be a nice fit (I know, I know, NHK is a full length series. It's just an example :P ) .

So yeah, that's all.

Oh, and by the way, I don't care if I miss-spelled any of the names. Correcting me will not make me any more motivated to learn the proper spelling.
