Aikido is a form of self-defense that's a lot of fun. I did it a few times last semester, but then schoolwork got piled on and I was forced to abandon it. However, I intend to go again this year and stick with it. Aikido is a lot of fun, you get to roll around on the floor, laugh a bit (sensei loved it when my friends and I would laugh cuz everyone would be dead silent and taking it too seriously) and just relax, let the stress out in a positive manner as you pin your partner to the ground. And sometimes, if we're really good, sensei will take out bokens for us to practice with! (BTW, he's not really called sensei, but I do it because the one who introduced me to Aikido is of my friends. The instructors change nightly, but it's fairly easy to realize who is an instructor and who isn't.) I'm not sure when the meetings will be, but it's in the armory and it's usually 2-3 nights a week. You don't have to make a huge commitment to it, if you can only go one night a week you'll still learn a whole bunch. If I remember correctly, meetings run from 7-8:30, but again, that might change depending on when the instructors can come down. Most of the time our instructors are actual students at UConn, but every once in a while we'll have a get together on a weekend or something with an actual sensei, who will teach us moves and such. But it's a lot of fun, and anyone interested please let me know, and I'll see if I can find out when the meetings will be. |

Lol. It is worth doing. I'v ehad some fun. And it really is pretty casual. You can walk in there in jeans and a t shirt and just learn, or really commit and buy a Gi. Either way, it's real fun and gives you some self-assuredness with self defence. |

I talked to Nelson (one of my friends that helps to run Aikido Club) and he says that it'll be held on Friday nights definately. Meetings are in the armory and they start at 7 and go until 8:30, but the instructors stay a little later and you can stay as long as you want pretty much and work with them on getting techniques down or work on tumbling. So Friday night, and Wednesday night. Now I know that'll affect all of us, the wednesday night one because of Anime Club, but that'll probobly be the one I go to, and then rush over to the student union for anime, since I have other things to do Friday nights. They're thinking of having it another day, but they have to discuss it and they'll decide later and let me know, and then I'll let everyone know. |

Yup, you learn new moves. Every night we go over new moves or we do old moves from a few nights ago just to keep everyone learning them and give the newbies a chance to learn them as well. Change in schedule: Aikido is officially on Monday and Friday nights from 7-8:30, so unfortunately I won't be able to go because of scheduling conflicts But if anyone else wants to go, it's a lot of fun, you get to meet new people and train at the same time. It's definately worth it |

Alright. Here's the deal. Aikido was cool. But capoeira was sooooo much better. The teachers are much more confident in the actual teaching instead of just being able to do the moves, the environment is better cuz theres like music and singing and clapping and stuff. It's just really cool. I encourage everyone to go to capoeira. The cool thing is a lot of it is actually improv and so even if you don't know the like real moves, as long as u can get the idea you can be awesome. Everyone come to capoeira. Here's the schedule: Monday: 4:30-6:30 putnam lounge Tuesday: 9-11pm in St mark's church, accross the street from the chem buildling. Wednesday: 5-7 putnam lounge Friday: 3-5, TBA (usually the Hawley Armory) Saturday: 11-1 music class at St Marks. Everyone come, I guarantee you'll have, at the very mininum(if you're a jerk or something), a mediocre time. If you're normal you'll love it. When it's the end of class and you have to get in the hodo(however it's spelled) which is the circle of people who watch the 2 fighters in the middle, and actually fight, you'll prolly feel awkward and like scared to do anything, but it's not so bad and its really really cool to watch the experts do it. So definitely go!! |
