Taken from the elder scrolls forums. How did you get your char's name? I was randomizing faces for imperials, and one popped up that looked familiar. I edited a few of her features, and she looked exactly like a girl I know , so I named the char after the girl. I've never told her though. That'd be kinda awkward. So, how'd you do it? |

Yeah, I'm sure it would... "Hey, I named my character in Oblivion after you." "...Oh...kay..." "...Uhh...so, yeah..." "..." "..." *Septim runs away crying* Whenever I name something, I put together random word parts until I get a name I like. |

Wow Septim, what next stalking?
Most of the time I think of my class (eg. Barbarian or something like that) and I think for a minute, "What would be a good barbarian name..." So I think a couple up and the one I like the best I use. The name happened to be Lothar the Strong.

Stalking? I would never. Anyway, the idea with how you take parts of words and make up names, that's how I make all the names for OE. |

That's exactly why I haven't told her. This would be worse: "Hey, I named my character in Oblivion after you." "...Oh...kay..." "And she looks exactly like you" *she raises eyebrow "It's true! I play with her all the time!" "..." "..." *Septim runs away crying* |

I'm a DM, so I've kinda developed a special knack for creating names on the fly. So that's where I get all my names. I named a female character Ira once. Only to find out later that Ira is actually Latin for "Fury." It totally fits too. My main character is a female woodelf named Marala. I made that name up on the fly as well, but now I see that's it's actually a real name. Spanish or something. You can find her on TES Source; I recently posted the savegame/ .off file by special request from another forum. |

I know I know; Latin's a dead language. But it's still being taught at many schools, and a staggering amount of words we use today are spawns of the ancient language of the Latinites. So there's still people that can speak Latin... it's just probably not their first language.

It isn't their first language, and all of the 'romantic' languages (Italian, French, etc.) are directly from Latin. Any-hoo. It's not for Oblivion, but for Baldur's Gate II. I named a character Gurthang later to realize that Gurthang is the name of Túrin's sword. (Well...It was forged by Eöl and originally named Anglachel. Eöl then gave it to Thingol as a fee so that he could remain in his forest of Nan Elmoth. Years later, Thingol gave it to Beleg when he went out in search of the missing Túrin. After Túrin had been captured by Morgoth's orcs, Beleg came to rescue him, but as he was cutting Túrin's bonds, accidentally nicked Túrin. Túrin thought it was the orcs and attacked, killing Beleg. Túrin then took the sword and, later, when it was reforged in Nargothrond, Túrin renamed it as Gurthang, but that's irrelevant... ) It fits, too, because Gurthang (sword) was an evil blade (kind of), and Gurthang (character) was evil. I must have unconsciously thought of it. (I had finished reading The Children of Húrin recently...) |
