Reposted due to profile problems in the old account, with modly permission. Name: Robert Santos Codename: None yet. Gender: Male Age: 18 (June 25) Affiliation: Unaffiliated Powers: Minor form of empathy (he can read people's reactions to things he does or says), Omni-linguism (can learn any language after having contact with it in either verbal or written form), will evolve into telepathy later on. Weakness: A certain lack of stamina compared to other people of similar athletic ability. His language powers are also limited in the following ways: When faced with foreign words, if they originate from a language that doesn't use the roman alphabet, then they'll only trigger his powers if they're written in their original alphabet. For example, seeing kotoba written somewhere won't make him learn Japanese, while seeing it in the original kanji will. Likewise, seeing words from languages that do use the roman aphabet written in other writing systems won't trigger his powers either. In other words, seeing world written in katakana (a phonetic Japanese writing system used for foreign words), wouldn't make him learn English. As for his empathy, it's limited to the person he's focusing on at the moment, and only that person. He can't read any other people that are around/talking to him, and if he's not focusing on anyone in particular, the he won't read anyone at all. It also won't work if he's talking to someone through something like a phone or if he's focusing on someone too far away to see clearly. Personality: Honestly, your first impression of him is likely to be that he's kind of a jerk. And he kinda is. He can be rather dismissive of other people's feelings, and opinions, and he has a tendency to be a little rude. On the other hand, he is incredibly aware of how he is, and of the effect of his words on people. Because of that, and certain events in his life he learned from an early age that there are limits to what people can take, and he tries to make sure that he never crosses that threshold each person has, that makes his words cross from annoying ribbing to abuse. At least as far as the person he's talking to is concerned, anyway. Other people around them a different matter, one that he's honestly not all that concerned with. He has a very gwhat you see is what you geth attitude towards the way he interact with people and along with the above mentioned self-awareness, he is very honest about the way he is. However, if he sees that it's not the time or the place, he knows when to shut-up or to tone it down. Despite, or maybe because of this, should someone stick by him and try to be his friend, they'll find that he's a very loyal and surprisingly supportive friend. He genuinely cares about the people that stick by him and help him through his problems, and makes sure to return in kind anyway he can. Description: Robert is tall, standing at around 6 feet (183 cm), with a stocky, muscular build and fair skin. His hair on the other hand, is short and dirty blond, and his eyes are dark blue. He's not usually seen wearing anything more elaborate than jeans and a t-shirt, with the occasional denim jacket if it's not too hot. During cold winter days though, he tends to wear long coats over a sweater and slacks, with scarf thrown in if he feels like it. If he's feeling lazy, he may also let some stubble grow. History: Robert grew up in the suburbia surrounding Bayville, with a perfectly normal family consisting of his parents, himself and an older sister that moved away to Harvard when he was ten. Growing up, he didn't have many friends, due mostly to his bluntness and lack of things like tact. Nobody in the family could really think of where that could of from, except maybe his sister, who often used him as her verbal sparring partner, and sharpened his tongue far more than most people would want for their children. When he was 10, his parents tried to get him into soccer, hoping that the team sport would help him get more social. It wasn't until he was 13 that he started taking it seriously, when he began playing as a goalie and actually joined a team. It didn't do much for his social life though. While his rudeness was tolerated on the field (you can't always play nice to win, after all), it didn't go over as well off the field, especially not among his teammates. Early in middle school, he did try everyone's advice of being nicer and tone down the... "Brutal honesty" as his family called it, but it didn't feel right for him to basically befriend people while pretending to be someone else, so he dropped the act, and to no surprise for anyone, most of them stepped away. The experience did make him value the few that DID stick by him more, though, so all in all, he'd call it a successful part of his life. His powers first started manifesting themselves when he was 15. It happened when he was in the same room as his grandparents on his father's side, who were having a conversation in their native Portuguese. Much to everyone's surprise, especially his own, he found himself not only fully understand them, but also replying in perfect Portuguese, when he had barely bothered to learn the basics when his father had tried to teach him. He barely escaped a thorough interrogatory when his sister suddenly appeared with news of her engagement, for which he will always be grateful. From there on forth, things got stranger and stranger for him. Suddenly, he could speak five languages, and he was much more aware than ever at how much some his teachers hated their jobs and class, and how other people felt while talking to him. And much to his frustration, his new found abilities didn't make him understand the grammar rules and technique behind the languages any better, so his grades at English didn't even improve because of it. All that, combined with how weirded out he was with the concept of being a mutant, have made him keep his abilities a secret, which thankfully wasn't that hard, given how "invisible" his powers where, and has kept the facade up to this day. He did shake up the family a bit when he came out as gay at the age of 16, but they were generally accepting of it, even though the older members required a little while to "adjust" to the idea, which he still rather resents. |
