Having a lot of things on your mind and walking down an icey street wasn't the best combination. It lead to slipping, which wasn't really the best thing for Samantha at the moment. So she had to walk slowly and keep an eye out for ice patches. This quickly turned frustrating, and coupled with everything on her mind, she wasn't in the best of spirits when she finally did reach the boarding house. She marched up to the house, the winter grass crunching under her feet. She looked nervously at the sharp icicles hanging about the door, and hastily knocked. She folded her arms and waited (rather impatiently) for someone (and she hoped that someone was Shay; she really needed to talk to her right now) to answer the door. "...Crap." Shay paused on her descent down the stairs, noticing a lone sock that had made a last-minute escape attempt from the laundry basket she carried. All instinct told her to just keep going and come back for it later, but there was that one nagging voice in the back of her mind that said, 'Oh come on, you can grab it. It's, like, two feet away!'. Her lips curved in a soft frown as she debated, shifting the large load of clothes to somewhat rest upon the railing. Now if she could just lean back far enough... Knock knock She blinked, pausing in mid-reach as her eyes drifted over towards the door. Her forehead creased slightly in curiosity and confusion. Didn't the weather guy say that temperatures were supposed to drop even further today? Who in the world would be getting out in it? Ultimately deciding to abandon the runaway sock, she made her way down the rest of the stairs before setting the dirty laundry aside altogether and answered the door. "Samantha?" she asked, her eyes widening in surprise at the sight of the other teen standing there. Without waiting for a reply she ushered her inside, already feeling the cold winter air nipping at her face. "Come on in, it's freezing out there." |

"T-thanks," Samantha said, stuttering from the cold. As she stepped inside, the difference of temperature was noticeable, and it didn't take her long to stop shivering. "I'm sorry to come by so suddenly- I maybe should've called first," she said, a bit too quickly so it all came out in a jumble. "But I went to visit my parents today... Oh my god, I just... I haven't even talked to Seamus about it; I came straight here. It was all so sudden, and I don't know what to think about it." Her words were still coming out quickly, and she was back to shivering, though this time she realized it was from all of her feelings on the matter. Suddenly she spotted the laundry basket and groaned. "Oh, great, I interrupted your laundry. I'm sorry! I really should've called first, I just... gah." She ran a hand through her hair and shook her head. "I'm kind of a mess." |

I haven't even talked to Seamus about it; I came straight here. It was all so sudden, and I don't know what to think about it." "Hey, hey...Sam...just because I'm dating a speed demon doesn't mean I've mastered the art of super-speech," she lightly joked, reaching out a hand to catch and steady her friend's shoulder. She offered a small smile of comfort, but there was evident worry in her eyes as well. "Just take a deep breath...and let's go sit down in the living room so you can tell me what's up, okay?" She made a motion to head to the living room, but something seemed to have caught and stalled Samantha. "Sam?" "Oh, great, I interrupted your laundry. I'm sorry! I really should've called first, I just... gah." She ran a hand through her hair and shook her head. "I'm kind of a mess." "What? Oh, psh, don't mind that," she waved, not even glancing back to the basket of clothes at the bottom of the stairs. "I can take care of it later; no big deal. Come on, let's go sit down...would you like something to drink? I could make some tea if you'd like." |

She smiled in mild relief at Shay's nonchalance at having her laundry interrupted, and it widened further at the mention of tea. "That would be good," she said. "Tea would be comforting right now..." She allowed Shay to lead her into the living room, and she sat down on the couch. "Thanks," she said as Shay went off to make tea. As she waited for Shay to return, she hunkered down on the sofa and tried to bring order to her thoughts. Before now, she didn't really realize just how jumbled and how much of a mess they were. It would definitely make telling Shay difficult if she couldn't get herself in order, so she took several deep breaths to try and calm herself. It was just all so sudden, how was she supposed to even consider it? She groaned, and shook her head. Perhaps she was making too big of a deal out of it, but to her it felt big, and she hoped Shay would have some insight on the matter. Edited by Samantha, Feb 4 2011, 03:20 AM.

It didn't take Shay as long as one might think it would to find a couple of clean tea cups. With how often she drank the stuff, she always made sure to always have at least two spare ones tucked away in the back of the cupboard. 'Mmm...now for the fast way or slow way...' Opting for the quicker option, she filled both cups with water and heated them up in the microwave; going and grabbing a few teabags while she waited for it to finish. When she finally heard the unmistakable beeeeeep beeeeeeep beeeeeeep, she drew both lightly-steaming cups out and added the teabags; leaving the wrappers on the counter to be dealt with later. "Did you want sugar or anything to go in your tea?" she asked as she walked into the living room and offered one of the cups to Samantha. "I think we might still have some honey left, too." |

"No, no," Samantha said, taking the cup of tea gratefully. "Plain is fine, I just need the warmth." She sipped her tea carefully, and found that after a few moments it really did help. She stared at the contents of it for a few seconds, before taking another sip. When she pulled the cup away from her mouth, she looked over to Shay. "So like I said, I just came back from my parents, and..." she paused and closed her eyes. "They- they want to pay for me to go to an expensive university." With her eyes still closed, she brought the cup back to her lips and took another drink. When she lowered it again, she added quietly, "O-outside of Bayville." |

"No, no," Samantha said, taking the cup of tea gratefully. "Plain is fine, I just need the warmth." Shay smiled and nodded as she took a seat next to Samantha on the couch, lightly dunking her teabag into the cup to make it a little stronger. "So what's up?" "So like I said, I just came back from my parents, and..." she paused and closed her eyes. "They- they want to pay for me to go to an expensive university." Shay blinked in surprise. The last time she had seen Samantha's parents--oh wow, that was awhile ago--they hadn't been exactly...on the best of terms. And now they were suddenly willing to pay her way through college? 'Then again, I suppose with a baby on the way, maybe they changed their minds,' she wondered. Aloud she smiled and said, "Hey, that's great! I mean, you've been looking at a lot of colleges lately haven't you? My brother mentioned seeing you at the library awhile ago with a bunch of applications...." "O-outside of Bayville." "Oh." Shay frowned slightly, her head tilting to the side slightly as she studied Samantha carefully. So that was the catch. "They want you to leave Xavier's, don't they?" she asked quietly, setting her cup on a side table. "And move in with them?" |

Samantha laughed, though there was no humor in it. "They have no intention of moving; they want me to move. Apparently they're willing to pay for an apartment and the college. They can't move because their jobs are so well established here..." She gave a frustrated sigh. "How can they just thrust this on me and expect me to like it?" She looked down. "The thing is, though... It's a good school," she said. "Supposedly it accommodates..." she held the cup in one hand and gestured animatedly to her belly. "And it's supposed to have really good programs. But it's h-hundreds of miles away..." she couldn't stop her voice from cracking a little as she spoke the last bit. The thought of leaving... "Let's be honest here," she said, her voice serious. "They've gotten over the fact I'm a mutant, but honestly? I don't think they like me living at the mansion. They have ulterior motives, even if it's 'cleverly disguised' as helping my future." |

"They have no intention of moving; they want me to move. Apparently they're willing to pay for an apartment and the college. They can't move because their jobs are so well established here...How can they just thrust this on me and expect me to like it?" Shay made a soft sound of sympathy in the back of her throat, shaking her head lightly as she let out a sigh. "They probably didn't expect you to like it, even. They just expected you to deal with it." She shook her head lightly again. "Which just isn't fair." "The thing is, though... It's a good school," she said. "Supposedly it accommodates..." she held the cup in one hand and gestured animatedly to her belly. "And it's supposed to have really good programs. But it's h-hundreds of miles away..." "So then they want you away from Seamus too," she said quietly, picking her cup back up as she drew it to her lips and took a sip. Yet there was a part of her that just...almost couldn't bring herself to say that her parents were being awful about this. I mean, she had a pretty good feeling that they were motivated by fairly selfish reasons, but at the same time...they would be providing their daughter with a good education, and their grandchild with a place to live and grow-up. Truthfully, she wouldn't be surprised if Sam's parents just kept the baby with them while she was busy in classes. Though expecting her to be away from Seamus was going a little too far. "Let's be honest here," she said, her voice serious. "They've gotten over the fact I'm a mutant, but honestly? I don't think they like me living at the mansion. They have ulterior motives, even if it's 'cleverly disguised' as helping my future." "No, I'm sure they don't," Shay said a bit darkly, taking another sip of her tea. "Even if they've accepted you as a mutant--which, by the way, I'm really glad that they have--it doesn't mean that they've accepted mutants in general. And I'm sure the last thing they want is for you to grow up under our terrible influence." She said the last few words with a bit of dramatic flair, trying to keep the conversation at least semi-light despite the heavy subject matter. "But the real question is...what do YOU think about all of this?" she asked, lowering her cup to rest on her lap; her hands lightly curved around the sides of the mug. "I mean, I know that you had been looking into different colleges. Is the school offering a program you're interested in going to?" |

"It isn't fair," she agreed, shaking her head. "They gave me a choice on the matter, but it's clear they would be extremely upset if I turned them down..." She shook her head lightly again. "It's not fair that they're putting me in the situation to let them down... again." She stopped with the cup mid-way to her mouth at Shay's next words regarding Seamus. "Ahoho, no, there's no damn way I'm leaving Seamus if I go. I made that crystal clear. In the end they agreed he could come if that's what I wanted. They know if they push that, it'd only drive me away, and they're really enthusiastic about having a grandchild." "It's their own fault I was forced there in the first place, so it's kind of... hypocritical in a way? That they'd suddenly care now, but I think you're right. And the thought of their grandchild being exposed to all of it, to them it must be unthinkable..." At Shay's question, she paused to process it all. After several minutes of thought, she sighed. "I really don't like the thought of leaving," she said quietly, her voice breaking from held back emotion. "I don't want Seamus to feel like he has to leave because of me, either... But another part of me thinks this is a great opportunity, I'm kind of... ashamed, that a part of me even wants it..." |

"Ahoho, no, there's no damn way I'm leaving Seamus if I go. I made that crystal clear. In the end they agreed he could come if that's what I wanted. They know if they push that, it'd only drive me away, and they're really enthusiastic about having a grandchild." "That's...great," Shay said, sounding as genuinely surprised as she looked. From what she had remembered of Samantha's parents, they didn't seem to be the type to be over-the-moon about having a grandchild this early...and she really hadn't imagined they would've liked the idea of their daughter being with a mutant too. But if they really were that enthusiastic about it, well...she saw that as both a really good thing and a slightly worrying one. "I mean, I have to admit I'm a little surprised, but...I mean, I'm glad that they're letting him go with you. It's just...it's going to be weird not having the two of you around the Institute." "It's their own fault I was forced there in the first place, so it's kind of... hypocritical in a way? That they'd suddenly care now, but I think you're right. And the thought of their grandchild being exposed to all of it, to them it must be unthinkable..." Shay nodded, taking another sip of her tea. There was a part of her that felt that she didn't completely have the right to judge Samantha's parents on this--and an even greater part of her that couldn't even begin to imagine what they were thinking in a situation like this--but she still didn't want to see Samantha stressing so much over all of this. For one thing, it just wasn't healthy for her, and for another...going to college was supposed to be a fun and exciting time for a person, or so she'd been told by countless teachers. Samantha should get to experience it, not have to worry about so many complications. "I really don't like the thought of leaving, I don't want Seamus to feel like he has to leave because of me, either... But another part of me thinks this is a great opportunity, I'm kind of... ashamed, that a part of me even wants it..." At this, Shay instantly looked up. "Don't be. You don't have anything to be ashamed in wanting something like that. You're right, it is a great opportunity, and you really wouldn't want to pass up the free ride--especially if you can get Seamus one too." She paused to take another sip, her voice quieting and her smile, though small, was gentle. "Anyone would want to have a chance like that. You shouldn't be so hard on yourself." She took another small sip of tea before setting the cup aside on the table again. "Have you talked to Seamus at all about this yet?" |
