(NES) Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels (All-Stars) Wizards and Warriors Sonic the Hedgehog (all emeralds) Metroid Prime 3 Super Mario Bros. 2 (All-Stars) Super Mario Galaxy 2 (beat final boss) Sonic Heroes (Team Sonic) Mega Man X (no weakness run) Mega Man X2 Mega Man X4 (both X and Zero) Mega Man X5 (bad ending) Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (completed the Thievius Raccoonus) Zoda's Revenge: Startropics 2 Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land New Super Mario Bros. Wii Contra Rebirth (normal mode) Epic Mickey Sonic Colors (Wii) On New Years' Day I started and completed Metroid, the original of the name. It's not the ridiculously hard game I thought it was, and though some of the items are hard to find, nothing's really hidden in an obscure place. Having Varia and Screw Attack helps loads. What surprises me is that the bosses and the items are utterly divorced; you can get to both Ridley and Kraid with just missiles, morph ball, and morph ball bomb. (Then again, I can't deny that you need the high jump boots to get to Ridley.) What's more, you aren't led to any exclusive items when you beat Ridley or Kraid--you get an extra health tank and 75 missiles from each, both items that you can find elsewhere in the game. It's totally possible, then, to pick up Ice Beam, Varia, and Screw Attack right off the bat and just cruise through Zebes like it was no thing. Unfortunately, I beat Ridley, then Kraid, then figured I'd want to find those things before moving on to Mother Brain, so I FAQ'd it up. Had I taken the game slower I definitely could've found them. Part of what makes the game beatable is the importance of missiles. People often say that starting with 30 health (out of a potential 899) after a game over is ridiculous. I'm not sure where to stand on the issue--it seems really dumb, but then again, I was often able to make progress so long as I had enough missiles. Throw in the Varia and I had little trouble. Ridley and Kraid are simple enough that you can beat them on 400 health or so, but they do a good job of draining your missiles. The music in the game is very in-your-face with its intent; it's not hard to describe the structure of the game based on what each area's music sounds like. For instance, Crateria (I'm assuming it's Crateria?) has the heroic music because it plays 1) at the start of your mission, 2) on your way to a boss, or 3) on your way back from a boss. You're never fighting any hard foes in Crateria, and it's really just a place you go between your missions. Think of it this way: when you play a Mega Man stage, it starts with a tune that builds tension (when it shows the robot master) and ends with a tune celebrating your victory (when you've beaten the robot master). Mega Man stages, then, are framed with music--your missions in Metroid are framed similarly. The difference is that in Metroid, your missions are framed with heroic music that has one of two meanings. One, it's preparing you for the upcoming challenge--the tune builds up your valor with its heroic sound. It's a sending off tune of sorts. Two, it's celebrating your recent victory--the tune is upbeat and heroic. You could apply the same kind of analysis to any song in the game. Especially interesting to me was the escape music--rather than a straight up "whoamg gotta get out of here" tune like Super Metroid, the escape theme in Metroid meshes stress and heroism. It takes the Crateria theme and puts it in a stressful light (I want to say they put it in minor key, but I don't know my music well enough to say that with any confidence), then eventually brings the theme up to a more upbeat, uplifting state. The song goes back and forth between these two variations on the Crateria theme, emphasizing the bittersweet situation Samus finds herself in--she just beat Mother Brain, but there's a time bomb set that might blow her up. Even in its stressful state, the Crateria theme never delves into utter chaos, which you'll find in the Tourian theme. No, it's still the good ol' heroic Crateria theme, just a bit darker this time around. Utter chaos would suggest that Samus has lost her grip and finds herself over her head. The presence of a melody, especially a melody we recognize, means we stand a chance. It's like the game is telling Samus she has some serious work to get done. She's in trouble, but she can pull it off if she pushes herself. This is definitely a game I can see myself replaying. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7cxHlZqqbc Also SAMUS IS A GIRL http://www.popmatters.com/pm/column/111831...-super-metroid/ Edited by Golem, Dec 31 2010, 06:55 PM.

My completed games: Metroid II Let me begin by saying the Spider Ball is amazing in this game!! But probably too amazing, and an exorbitant amount of time is spent crawling around the ceilings in this game. They were smart in minimizing its effectiveness in the sequels. Still, it's pretty damn cool. Haha. Hmm. I want to say it's one of the more difficult Metroid games I've played, yet I don't know if it's actually tougher than the first one. In Metroid II, you're constantly fighting various forms of metroids and it takes a while to knock 'em dead, especially the omega metroids because they're uber fast and like to shove you around a lot; you can't really shoot them from above or below, so getting the proper footing is key. IMO there's nothing this challenging Metroid 1, except for Mother Brain. Kraid might have been hard too, but I forget. They got nothin' on the Metroid Queen, pfft. But then while Metroid II's antagonists are stronger and there's more of them, the game also allows you to save. And if you die, you don't start back up with a puny 30 health. So it's a trade off. Items and secrets are also a lot less obscure in II. I remember I was stuck in Metroid 1 for a while and I didn't know where to go so I FAQ'd it up. Turned out I had to bomb a hole in a floor where I felt like I would have had no way of knowing to do that. Metroid II's approach is a lot more forgiving. Like for example more often than not you'll see an energy tank or missile expansion in plain view but blocked off somehow, and so you know that you simply have to bomb a wall nearby or look for an opening. As a general rule, if you see the item, you can retrieve the item. And I think that's definitely the way the game needed to be, more obvious, and structurally a little more focused, considering the smaller size of the game boy and how everything is in black & white (although I was playing with a palette on my GBA). That's another thing that made it more difficult. While I eventually got the hang of it, one has to have a really good memory, because I got lost quite a few times just wandering around trying to find the next area. Since everything is colored the same, and the hallways are at times similarly shaped and sized, that can be real pain the ass trying to navigate. "Ok, heard an earthquake.. that means.. I have to go.. here? crap... how far back do I have to go.... ok, I remember that one room was flooded *goes there* Awww this room is still flooded!!" lol The Graphics are fine, there's some nice detail in there occasionally. The music is ok, it's minimal but whatever is there is fitting enough, I guess. There's some good stuff, as Golem pointed out. The escape theme is less of an escape and more of a triumphant exit. The Queen's Lair is a callback to Metroid's Tourian. But anyway, I really enjoyed it, it's a good game. And an excellent game by Game Boy standards. Better than Metroid 1? I'm not sure yet. Probably not. It's close though. The fact that Metroid II feels like a worthy sequel and it's a freakin GB game is impressive, I will say that. I'd give it a B/B+. |

I spent a lot of my first full playthrough Spiderballin' around, too. If you ever give it a replay, though, you won't be using it nearly as much. Then again, when I played Metroid first of the name, that same paranoia led me to find the hole in Norfair's floor fairly quickly; maybe I'm more paranoid than you, and so maybe you were more sane in your Spiderball use than I was. The thing about the first three Metroids is that, your first time through, you go everywhere and try everything--and of course, not everything works. The Metroids and score-based Sonic Team games share something in common here: the more you learn the game, the more you get out of it. In Metroids, you get a more efficient playthrough (plus, it's just fun to learn the ins and outs of Zebes and SR-388). Queen Metroid is awesome and is really the only satisfying final boss of the main series. Mother Brain is about as hard as Queen Metroid in Zero Mission, but--well, I shouldn't go around spoiling it. Then again, Metroid II is the only game of the main series where your exit isn't timed. The music's been growing on me as of late. I go through cycles where I look at each 2D Metroid soundtrack one after the other, and the more I do it, the more I understand their interrelation. It's a satisfying process that made the Metroid II soundtrack more than just cool absurdity. |

I am working on clearing out this new backlog of Steam games I acquired while clearing out my main console backlog. Right now I transffered the original Doom games to my PSP and playing those at work. Slowly making my way through Doom 3 on my Laptop w/ an Xbox 360 Controller. So hopefully within the next 7 days I'll have beaten Doom 2, Doom 3 & Doom 3 Ressurection of Evil and Start working on Evil Genius some more. |

I could not beat Adventure 2; some of those Silver Coin Challenges were tough. Is there a different ending or something? This is what I've completed so far: The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures And that's it. Currently working through... Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story Muramasa: The Demon Blade |

Man, Spaceport Alpha: Silver Coin Challenge (both Adventure and Adventure 2) raped a lot of my childhood. :_: As for alternate ending... you'll just have to (get yourself an egg and) beat it to find out.

I just beat Wario Land 2, Rayman 2, and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. They all suck. Not really, but WL2 definitely does. |

Whoa ho ho there, B102! Wario Land 2 sucks? Mind if I ask what's wrong with it?![]() I have a friend who doesn't care for Wario Land 2, but he thinks Wario Land 4 is pretty groovy. It is a much more fun and lively game than WL2, and while it's still a puzzle platformer, it goes for a very different flavor than WL2. Myself, I just beat Psycho Mantis. I'm doubting I can finish the game before the summer comes and I lose access to the game until I buy it for myself. Also, Metroid Prime: Hunters is a fun game. It's definitely disappointing by Metroid standards, but I enjoyed exploring the different areas and shooting at different things. Still, not on par with normal Metroid story, atmosphere, exploration, or even gameplay. |

Yeah, Metroid Prime: Hunters wasn't exactly great, but I had fun with it. I should start that game over again. I played it for a while, and got pretty far, but I honestly can't remember where I left off. I played a few matches on Wi-Fi back in the day too. I did pretty decent, I guess. |

I can verify that you're not missing out on much; the game's quality is consistent throughout. Well, the first form of the final boss is kinda neat, I guess, but not much else is noteworthy. As for Wi-Fi, I remember Timnis telling us he found the people who played online frustrating. Can't remember why, though. | |
