Just so you know I play Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior too Just most of the other stuff bores me. It's too damn detailed. It's always set in the same setting. That's why it doesn't interest me. |

Wait, what are examples of good RPGs? Because I've played Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and one of the final fantasies and got bored with them and didn't really like them. On the otherhand, I will bust out the pokemon emulator every 2 or 3 years and do a quick run through. And I think there IS emotional attachment. How can I not have something as innocent and nice as Butterfree not be on my team? He's always my first pokemon I catch back when he's a little baby caterpie! Who the heck cares about Zapdos or Mewtwo. I'll take Butterfree anyday of the week. (I don't know anything after the RBY games) And on the third hand, dungeons and dragons is better than any console video game ever. |

Chrono Trigger is a great RPG. If you get bored with it, then it just means it's not your kind of game, while Pokemon apparently is. You probably are just not much of an RPG gamer.

I don't think I am. But I did fall in love with frog's theme though, so I guess that's a positive I can take out of it if I had never played it. |

The creativity, limitless freedom and social interaction of a D&D game makes it better than any console game ever. The only thing you can possibly compare it to is PC gaming, but even still, it can't have all the qualities D&D has. You can have social interaction with other people, but that would be in a limited online game. On the otherhand, you can have games where you can mod everything and change the game to how you see fit, but you won't be able to have the same multiplayer interaction.

You're suggesting that D&D players have social interactions? Man, this topic just keeps getting funnier and funnier.

D&D doesn't exist without social interaction. It involves talking to people instead of reading pre-programmed text from a television screen.

Yup, Kester is right. I did play D&D in the past, and yes, I did interact with the other players and all that much more than say...when I'm playing Pokemon. Also, I think Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest RPGs of all time. No joke. I like Pokemon, but it's mostly just something I play to waste time, really. Because who needs time? |

Console RPGs contain stories that are purposely put together, but I'm almost certain none of them reach any level of artistic integrity. In other words, they're popcorn entertainment. (I can empathize with that--I think Robo's story is really cool, and there's some odd satisfaction that comes with not letting Magus in my party.) D&D, on the other hand, allows for chaotic, off-the-cuff stories. While this may make for sloppy storytelling, it's also much more demanding of your creative abilities. I'm a fan of the argument that D&D > your standard console RPG (your Chrono Triggers and your Final Fantasies--the ones that tell stories). Games like Pokemon, as well as tactics RPGs, are another issue; they focus on gameplay to a much greater extent and work harder to justify their medium. Not to say Final Fantasy 7 has no focus on gameplay, but certainly Ogre Battle focuses much more on it. Edited by Golem, Apr 2 2010, 06:00 PM.

It's a bit funny how this was moved from Goof Off to Video Games. It's like a Goof Off discussion went serious. --------- I don't think I can agree with the D&D is better idea. It's a different experience. I'd say console RPG's (linear ones) are more analogous to playing a book, rather than to tabletop RPG's. MMO's would perhaps be more analogous to tabletops, I'd think. |

Huh, yeah. I guess when it comes to D&D vs. console RPGs, it's apples-and-oranges. MMOs are actually a pretty good correlation to D&D (aside from MMOs being terrible ;)).

I wouldn't say MMOs are a good correlation. I would say they are a "better" correlation than a typical console RPG.. They have interaction, but it's different. It's not fun, creative interaction, but more of a militaristic teamwork interaction. But I guess that falls in your MMOs being terrible part. |

RPG in video game terms is far removed from the literal meaning of "Role Playing Game" and is really just a blanket term to identify the genre. If you can gain experience points and level-up in the game, it falls within the RPG genre, regardless of the story and its characters (or lack thereof.) So Pokemon might be a bad example of an RPG (heck, I dunno I've never played Pokemon) but I'm pretty sure it's one nonetheless. |
