Since the Nintendo Fans site is down, I decided to post this here. When I was talking to Bowser about this, I pretty much collected my thoughts on it, I guess. You can go ahead and post it on the site later if you want. I don't care. I actually feel better for typing this. I posted on this community a long time ago on my past with Sonic. It's been an on and off obsession ever since I was 2 or 5 or whatever. I fell in love with the game and I continued to like it, old and new. It doesn't really matter to me that much. I've been hearing people bitching about Sonic, mostly the fans of the old Sonic, saying it isn't what it used to be. Yeah, I have to agree. Seeing Sonic abused like this does piss me off a bit. Now, I say piss me off because here's something I haven't revealed in the community and I'm only going to share small details on due to me wishing some privacy: yes, like that one guy who claimed that the game Earthbound has saved his life, Sonic has as well. In a different way. Sure, Sonic isn't exactly satirical or anything like Earthbound is, but Sonic has influenced a lot of my work and has given me something to live for when I felt like life was too difficult to go on. (Yeah, sounds kind of loserish and creepy, but bear with me) Sure, it shouldn't affect me that much, but to see the fans and the company drive it and abuse it as much as they do upsets me more than the average Sonic fan. That's why I posted a few dumbass rants here that I probably never should have posted here. It's like as if Sonic borders me on the realm of happiness and depression. It's a bipolar addiction. I started writing a lot of Sonic fanfiction (however, I am trying to write this one, then I'm going to focus on original work for a while) because I ended up becoming so enamored with the blue hedgehog that it seemed like I absolutely idolized him and loved to create stories about him. As my friends on DA know as well, most of my art is about Sonic as well. When I was afraid to reveal my stories to the online public, I made an 80 page long idea chart on this one Sonic fanfiction. I kept writing in it and writing in it that my doctors seemed to think I had OCD. Sure, the characters aren't exactly the deepest, but I loved each and every character. Tails, Knuckles, Robotnik, especially Sonic. The older games are definitely the peak of the 90's gaming revolution. The absolute speed, the bright colorful pleasing graphics, the simple storyline, and with the choice of playing three characters with different abilities, there was exploration as well, so there was replay value. However, when I later grew up, I became severely depressed and I had a host of other problems, but yet it seemed like when critics panned Sonic over and over for "stupid storylines", "Sonic had the misfortune of talking", "Shadow has a gun", etc. etc., I still believed SEGA could make a game one day that would shut them up. It seemed as if my depression worsened, Sonic got worse as well. Not saying Sonic is copying my life or anything, but it was around that time when they came up with the stupid Sonic the werehog bullshit that I, along with Sonic, was a walking and talking piece of @#$% that seemed to never please anybody. I did later got a lot better thanks to a good friend who definitely recognized that I had a problem. And now, SEGA announced Sonic 4, which they promised would be like the old Sonics. Great graphics, no overbearing storyline, no bunch of characters, back to the good old sidescrolling speed games. It seemed as if that SEGA began to recognize that something was wrong and they started all over again. Like I did with my life. Yeah, this post does seem dramatic and it seems like I'm a fanatic that would slit her wrists if the next Sonic game sucks. Well, not exactly. It seemed as if when a Sonic game came out, I would defend it and say that SEGA was stepping in the right direction. The only thing I can wish for that Sonic, like Mario, would bounce back and make a game that makes the critics drop their mouths like with the older games and definitely the newer Mario games (God, Galaxy 2 looks really awesome right now). You can say maybe I'm a hopeless romantic of a fan that still believes that the next game will be the @#$%, but all I can say is that right now, I hope Sonic 4 will be everything we always wished in a Sonic game. Hell, it could be better than Sonic 3 for all we know. If it fails, I'll still believe in it. If it dies, the only thing I can talk about is the good memories I have of it and keep it alive in my head. Maybe I really am obsessed. Maybe I'm just some loser that needs to be influenced by things other than a blue hedgehog. Although I have said many stupid things I take back, I can still believe. Godspeed, Sonic. Godspeed. |
