Thanks for posting the Youtube links. Was a great evening last Saturday. Took some friends who have only just heard the guys and they all loved it.

I've been on the forum as a guest before but have only just registered. I had a load of stuff to discuss but it appears that there's not a lot of activity on here at present :(
Anyway, if there's anybody out there, here goes...

I've been listening to the very wonderful What A Whopper a lot recently. In my opinion it's the best compilation along with the first Volume Contrast Brilliance. Love the chit chat between songs and all the versions from Peel sessions and demos are superb. In some cases better than on singles/albums, such as the excellent Black Are The Flowers. With Fallout the lyrics seem to be completely different. Are they documented anywhere? I think the Peel version might even be better than the single version. Shows how lyrics varied a lot at the time and were often re-written. I wonder what Lester's original ones are. Possibly the ones Adam used on the Ants' version?!

I'm not a huge fan of Lost Weekend (hope bid isn't reading this), although I think a lot of the songs are good. I liked the next album Dante's Casino a lot more. I have a Gary Crowley radio session on tape which I reckon has the best versions of Jacob's Ladder, Life, Cowboy Country and Cargo on it. I've seen the lyrics to Cargo but I believe they are about someone specifically (I think Bid mentioned this once live). Not sure who though, wonder if anyone knows?

Apart from that, I wonder if the much maligned Fat Fun will appear again live. I doubt it though judging Bid's reaction when it's shouted out ;)

Cheers, Surfing SW15

Good to hear from you. People do read this site, I see the log in figures etc, but few post on it these days, sadly it seems to have become a bit of a casualty to Facebook.

I do agree that many of the songs are so much better in the live version than the studio ones, I suppose they just improve every time the band play them :-)

Bid, who DOES read this :D , will have to answer your questions about lyrics though, there is nowhere 'official' online where you will find them posted.

I don't think 'Fat Fun' is 'much maligned' as such, I think it's just become a bit of a running joke between the band and the old fans who shout for it. Actually Bid did claim, on Facebook, the other day that he intends to play it as an encore at the next gig.... we shall have to see if he means it ^o)

I thought that was the case! Saw some good stuff on the Facebook page, like the US documentary/interview with Bid and Lester.

Shame no site dedicated to such great lyrics. Some are on Song Meanings website for instance but a lot are missing.
For live versions and demos I had plenty of bootleg tapes back in the 80s. Will have to dig them out one day. It's good that plenty of great stuff has cropped up on compilations over the years. Would be nice if the Peel Sessions were released in their entirety one day...maybe another one for Bid :) !

Well maybe we might get treated to Fat Fun then soon ;) Hopefully i'll get a chance to hear it at the Lexington...

I hope you have better luck with your old bootleg tapes than I did, when I finally got them back a couple of years ago (after being stored at my ex-husband's for some time) none of them would play :ermm: :ermm:

There's no plans to reissue the Peel sessions in their entirety, sadly. The rights for those still belong to the BBC....

If you are coming to The Lexington do get your ticket soon (if you don't have it already?) they seem to be selling very quickly and it will be the last TMS gig in London this year.

That's terrible! :o I've heard that they should be baked or something like that to be preserved. I'm very attached to mine, especially my old Ants ones.

Shame the Peel sessions didn't get released in the 90s when a lot of others did. Fortunately most are on compilations though.
Hopefully the BBC haven't deleted the masters like they did with a lot of old music shows/sessions.

Will try and pick up a ticket soon, once I've worked out if any friends are up for it too. thanks!
