Finally, the genes that relate to the phenotypes are starting to come out. I have thick, curly hair, while my father has thin, curly hair, so EDAR is def. not responsible for curliness, as razib seems to think earlier. This gene is the reason why wigs are made from Asian or Native American hair and why hair-stylists like to work with Asian hair. http://www.gnxp.com/blog/2007/10/could-it-be-hair-form.php http://www.gnxp.com/blog/2007/11/edar-cont...r-thickness.php Seems to have reached fixation/100% in certain northern populations of eastern Asians and Native Americans (the samples with less than 100% are recent admixture in my opinion). Cold-adaptation is given as a reason for this selection, which makes sense, but lice-prevention (as mentioned in the comments at the blog) is also a good explanation, but then again that's also cold-adaptation, since it isn't easy to clean one-self in cold and high-altitude climates. |

Update at razib's blog: http://www.gnxp.com/blog/2007/11/hair-thickness-update.php As for proximal hair end diameters, check the thread at http://z6.invisionfree.com/man/index.php?showtopic=1648 |

A new study on Japanese further strengthening the association between thick hair and EDAR: http://scienceblogs.com/gnxp/2008/11/edar_east_asian_hair_form.php? update 2009-10-25 http://www.gnxp.com/blog/2009/10/edar-lubrication.php EDAR has now been linked to lubrication. I refrained from posting about a recent study that showed links between shoveling of teeth and EDAR, but then this new study pops up. It just seems that this one gene confers so much cold-adaptation: thick hair for warmth, shoveled teeth to strengthen teeth for the artice diet of frozen/dried raw meat, and now lubrication (of the nostrils for example) for the cold, dry air.
