Genomic diversities and affinities among four endogamous groups of Punjab (India) based on autosomal and mitochondrial DNA polymorphisms Link Notes: 1. No study of Y-chromosome haplogroups. A major draw back. 2. A strong differentiation is observed between caste(Brahmin, Khatri, Jat) and erstwhile out-caste(Dalit, scheduled castes) in both autosomal and mtDNA analysis. 3. Ambivalent attitude in giving clear caste position in caste hierarchy to the non-Brahmin castes. 4.Does not find varying degrees of closeness to Europeans/Asians according to their caste position(Bamshad et al. 2001 mentioned that upper castes closest to Europeans, middle castes in between and lower castes closest to East Asians). Unfortunately, the study just mentions that it can't support that position but does not give observed affinities. 5. mtDNA M forms 25% of Brahmin population, 40% of other two castes and 50% of Dalits. My observation: The study very strongly supports Aryan migration if not invasion(as the differentiation is very starc in mtDNA, as I believe invaders won't bring their female folk). |

(This is ren. I've complied all the studies posted by me and black man together in this post. I left out manju's because he had comments under his study. black man, may I delete your above posts? Anyone know of other studies, please post them.) 2009 Mitochondrial and Y-chromosome diversity of the Tharus (Nepal): a reservoir of genetic variation http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/9/154 The Indian origin of paternal haplogroup R1a1* substantiates the autochthonous origin of Brahmins and the caste system Sharma et al. http://www.nature.com/jhg/journal/v54/n1/full/jhg20082a.html#aff1 2008 Genetic variation in South Indian castes: evidence from Y-chromosome, mitochondrial, and autosomal polymorphisms (Watkins et al. 2008) http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2156/9/86/abstract 2007 "Y-chromosomal evidence for a limited Greek contribution to the Pathan population of Pakistan" reports rea-deal R*(xR1, 2) in Burusho, Kalash, Pathan, and Pakistan, with the highest percentage (~10% in Burusho, a non-IE ethnicity), then 6% in the unique Kalash, and declining to negligible amounts in the Pathans and Pakistanis.
