ARMS RACE:
[size0] n. "competition between two groups to achieve superiority in quality and quantity of military arms."

----------------------------------------------

  • During the Romulan invasion by Captain Nero, which altered history as it would have been known, a majority of the Federation Fleet was "engaged" in the Laurentian system. Doing what, you might ask? Since 2223, relations between the Federation and the Klingons has degenerated to unremitting hostility, resulting in antagonistic encounters and fierce skirmishes. Reported Klingon activity has increased by 17.6% at an unnerving rate in the Laurentian system, a formerly neutral zone. The rate continues to rise, something that Starfleet could not ignore, which was why many ships were located there - to post as guards and watchmen, keeping the Klingons out of Federation Space.

    But why the increased activity?
------------------------------------------------
  • Since the 22nd century, the Orion Syndicate has specialized in criminal acts, ranging from slavery and piracy to smuggling and assassination. Everything is done for a profit, and since it is made up of some of the most brilliant minds all over the galaxy, they have become a rather formidable force. "Content" is not a word in their vocabulary, though, and every day they look for new ways to gain more. And they just might have found something. They've struck a deal with the Klingons, supplying them with dilithium, military arms, and information on the Federation for a price. As a result, the Klingons have become more bold. However, having the Federation completely wiped out isn't in the best interests of the Syndicate, so they've instigated a similar deal with Federation officials.

Now, both sides are being played by their dealer, participating in an arms race that holds most of their attention. Naturally, neither side knows that the other is being offered the same deal by the same people. The Syndicate is, after all, nothing if not secretive and elusive. And while this is going on, the Syndicate has found it easier to continue their other "black market" activities, as the Federation is too occupied with the new Klingon threat.
----------------------------------------------------
  • The USS Enterprise, under the command of Captain James T. Kirk, has embarked on her Five Year Mission. The Captain, his ship, and her crew have already made history by defeating Captain Nero, and many are expecting to hear about more feats and accomplishments about the young Captain. Well, he'll certainly have his chance. Although the Five Year Mission is ultimately an exploratory mission, with the rising threat of the Klingons and the Syndicate's involvement in many aspects of the galaxy, they are bound to run into trouble.

Besides, bright up and coming young men like Captain Kirk often catch the Syndicate's attention.

They'll be keeping an eye on this promising Starfleet officer, that much is for certain.</span>
