Sometimes, I'll converse with people out there who assert we're nothing. Earth doesn't matter. We're just an unfathomably small blue planet in an unimportant position in a vast universe. You guys know people like this? Are you one of those people? I don't get it. I'm on the direct opposite side, and oddly enough, with the exact same reasoning.

The universe is mostly empty space. Then you have a bunch of dust and hydrogen and shit. Sometimes a few stars will be made, and some rock will come together and orbit around the stars. But there's not much to see. Balls of gas and balls of rock, barren and boring.

Then there's us. A small ember of life in a dark basement. We're so incredibly special it's unbelievable. This sounds gay as hell, but there's miracles going on around us constantly, and they're so commonplace we take it for granted. Forget pretty nebulas and shiny stars, look at all we've got here. Green. Life. Oceans. Earth's the oddest and most fascinating area of the universe, a place where the elements decided to come together and create something as complex and beautiful as a human being instead of another rock. If it was just one tadpole it'd still be the most special and interesting thing in the known universe, but we have countless numbers of tadpoles and billions of other animals and even billions of humans, the one group of molecules that can go "Hey, all this is pretty cool."

I don't get it man, I don't get it. It's why aliens are such a big deal. They're certainly out there, somewhere, and to be able to find another place in the universe as divine as Earth would be bigger than any other discovery.

im not really like that. im sort of a nihilist, but more of a hedonistic nihilist than an ultra depressed one. i dont think in the end the world has a whole lot of value except for what value you assign to it and thats pretty much what matters anyway

i posted this last night and i have no idea what i meant im sorry

The universe is so incredibly vast it's hard to say if we really are special. From what we've discovered we certainly are special. I am one of those nihilists who think we have no reason to be here and life doesn't really matter in the end.

It's pretty reasonable to assume there aren't many planets as rich as ours.

That was a really good post. The last paragraph not so much, the alien thing kind of detracted from the overall power and could have been unspoken and left out, and acknowledged as a given in the first place.

Value is a human concept, so obviously we are valuable to ourselves. Now pass me the joint, Tal.

The Universe is too big and too complex for one to assume anything. Or rather, you can't rule out anything.
