ATLANTA —  Pro wrestler Chris Benoit suffered brain damage from his years in the ring that could help explain why he killed his wife, son and himself, a doctor who studied Benoit's brain said Wednesday.

The analysis by doctors affiliated with the Sports Legacy Institute suggests repeated concussions could have contributed to the killings at Benoit's suburban Atlanta home.

The wrestler's father, Michael Benoit, told reporters Wednesday that he knows his son had concussions because his son told him so. But he also said he knows of no medical records or records kept by the wrestling league to support the diagnosis.

Steroid use also has lingered as a theory behind the killings, since anabolic steroids were found in Chris Benoit's home and tests conducted by authorities showed Benoit had roughly 10 times the normal level of testosterone in his system when he died.

The institute, which researches the long-term effects of concussions, coordinated the testing using samples of Benoit's brain tissue provided by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The Waltham, Mass.-based institute's president is former pro wrestler Christopher Nowinski, who has said he had to quit the ring after a kick to the head. Nowinski still has ties with World Wrestling Entertainment Inc., which runs the league he and Benoit were in.

A lawyer for Stamford, Conn.-based WWE did not immediately return a call Wednesday seeking comment. The company has maintained steroid use did not cause Benoit to snap.

Despite the results of the institute's tests, there was no way to know if Benoit's concussions contributed to the murder-suicide, said Dr. Robert Cantu, a member of the institute who also is chief of neurosurgery service at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass.

"Whether it is the sole factor I believe is speculation and I will not go there," Cantu said by phone.

The level of brain damage Benoit had can cause depression and irrational behavior, Cantu said.

Benoit's brain showed the same degenerative processes that doctors working for the institute found in the brains of three men who had played pro football and committed suicide, Cantu said. There were abnormal protein deposits caused by trauma to Benoit's brain, Cantu said.

There's no evidence that steroid use causes such protein deposits, Cantu said, though he noted the issue has not been exhaustively studied.

Investigators allowed the institute to test Benoit's brain tissue with the permission of his father, who lives near Edmonton in Ardrossan, Alberta.

Michael Benoit said Wednesday that he agreed to the testing because murder-suicide was out of character for his son. He also disclosed that after the killings, he discovered a diary written by his son that showed his son was having problems.

"After reading the diary, I would have thought it was written by someone who was extremely disturbed at the time," Michael Benoit said.

He did not elaborate, but he did say a friend told him that prior to the murder-suicide, Chris Benoit had been wearing a rosary, which he said was also out of character.

"I think it's the extreme that is in the wrestling industry today," he told reporters. "The human skull is not built to get hit by a chair or something."

The father said he has not discussed with his attorney whether to take any legal action against the WWE or anyone else in the case. His attorney, Cary Ichter, said that at a later time he "will give thoughtful consideration" to appropriate steps to take in the "legal arena."

Nowinski said concussions can happen in pro wrestling even though many of the moves are staged.

"I got four concussions in three years as a professional wrestler," said Nowinski, who works for the WWE on its initiative to encourage young people to vote. "A lot of concussions happen from mistakes."

Prosecutors have said Benoit, 40, strangled his wife with a cord, used a choke hold to strangle his 7-year-old son, placed Bibles next to the bodies and hanged himself on a piece of exercise equipment the weekend of June 22.

Authorities have said Benoit's personal doctor, Phil Astin, prescribed a 10-month supply of anabolic steroids to Benoit every three to four weeks between May 2006 and May 2007. Astin has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of improperly prescribing painkillers and other drugs to two patients other than Benoit.

It wasnt brain damage >> You dont see other wrestlers more famous than him that get beat on just as much killing their families then hanging themself do you? Not to mention he wouldnt have any 'concussions' as its all a show. Half those moves would kill a person instantly, such as a 'pile driver' which would snap someone's neck like a twig, ESPECIALLY a 380lb guy. All that weight would come crashing down on the most fragile part of the spine, the neck, shattering it instantly. Other moves that could hospitalize or kill a human include a 'clothesline' which would crush their trachea (Remember these arent 140lb teenagers fighting. Theres 380lbs of inertia crushing it.) Getting hit in the head with a folding chair by a guy built like a buick could easily cause instantaneous brain damage, and possibly neck injuries. The guys that get hit dont even get knocked unconscious. If you even just watch, when they do things like jump off the turnbuckle or do anything really, you can tell they never actually hit the other person. So its not 'concussions'. Im sticking with my steroid theory. The steroids are there, they were in his body, TEN TIMES the mount that should be, and steroids are known to do crap like cause extreme levels of agression.

After the video, with the female often further enraged or upset, the male will walk onto the set; he will usually be booed loudly by the audience. The male will typically react in a "you-don't-know-me" mannerism, showing confidence that he is not the father. A picture of the baby juxtaposed with a picture of the male will appear on a video screen, to which the female will usually say how she thinks they look similar, and the male will say how they do not look alike at all. One common occurrence is that each person will claim that he or she is beyond 100% (often 200% or 1,000%) sure that the man is/is not the father, with figures sometimes reaching as high as 1,000,000% (the highest this has it gone is "infinity-plus 1 percent", in the show aired on November 20, 2007 when a participant named Natasha (surname unknown) claimed to be "infinity-plus 1" percent sure that a man was the father of her child (The DNA test then proceeded to prove her wrong) [3]).

Ok, so the stories in the WWE are fake. The wrestling matches are pretty fixed or rigged but the pain is real.

I heard Chris Benoit suffered from Dementia.

Edit: Hey Akakios, good call. Owen Hart...yikes. :(

wow, ia. all i have to say is...

lol.

I can't beleive you think those steel chairs are real steal. Piledrivers don't hurt at all. I've taken them from my 250 pound brother (and i was 80 pounds at the time. basicly 10 years old).

Verafor thats my point, you were light, that and your brother isnt probably going to do a real piledriver on you. And yes there are accidents. owen hart, joey Mercury, etc etc etc. Tell me, even after these horrific and disfiguring injuries, did they go home, strangle their son, and kill their wives, then hang themselves? I dont think so.

Heres what i think. the fact that he used a wrestling move to kill his son proves he was cognizant during the experience. he knew what he was doing, and picked a move that would be used against an opponent. Thus, in his roidrage (Which does exist; its testosterone, or to be more specific, depo-testosterone cypionate, heightened levels of which are known to cause excessive agression), he treated his son as such. He did not, in my opinion, intend to kill his son but in his heightened state af agression, he took it too far, held on for too long, and choked him too tight. it is my belief the son did something wrong, and in his rage, Benoit intended to 'punish him' in a display of who was boss. had he been out of it, he would have simply beat his son to death or something a lot more simple.

"a study of two pairs of identical twins, in which one twin used anabolic steroids and the other did not, found that in both cases the steroid-using twin exhibited high levels of aggressiveness, hostility, anxiety and paranoid ideation not found in the "control" twin."

I don't want to discount the use of steroids, but I don't believe you can just discount the idea of brain damage. Especially considering...

Granted, Benoit's case of killing his family was a bit more extreme.

I dunno, there's more I could say, but I doubt it will even matter.

Jassi, you fool. IA knows exactly what happened. I mean, you can't say there's a possibility for anything besides roid-rage, because.... Ummm.... IA WAS THERE! YES! That's how he knows! Hmm.... Wait! IA is being highly aggressive in these Benoit topics....

IA has roid-rage!

GASP!

It wasn't Benoit after-all.

It was IA!

Chuck. While I do take your point, my point is that there arent may options. His autopsy states tehre was ten times the normal level of testosterone in his system, and the drugs were found in his house. He might have had some protein deposits in his brain; ok. Lets measure. These protein deposits have only killed two other people. Steroids have been accredited to a lot more death and violence. Which seems more likely? Especially since most pro players of sports would have these, considering they all undergo the same brutality in their sport. I may seem upset, but its becasue I hate seeing people make excuses for murderers. So really heres the point; it could have been protein in his brain. it could have been steroids. it could have been any number of things. But it actually doesnt matter. He killed people. The end. The reason is not important; the ends do not justify the means, and the means do not justify the ends. He, his wife, and his kids are dead. What caused it? Who cares? It still happened. He still killed two innocent human beings for no apparent reason. So there. How about this. A guy downs fifteen beers, heads out to his car, and drives home. On the way he head ons a family of three, killing them all. when he goes to jail, he is set free. When the family of the ones who died asks why, the cops say, 'Oh, he was drunk. He was under the influence of something and therefore he faces no repurcussions for killing people, even though what he was under the influence of alters his mindset.' So, because his mind was a little out of order at the time, he gets away with killing innocent people. Thats kind of whats happening here; people keep trying to make up excuses why he did it so he seems like less of a murderer, but it really boils down to the fact that there is no justification for taking your own son and wife's lives. End of story. He could have been completely cuckoo; he still killed his family. He could have been on roids; he still killed his family. he could have been in an altered mindset by some 'protein deposits' (Which sounds ultra-dubious to me anyway; protein deposits on the brain's surface arent likely to interfere with much. people with tumors in their brain often function quite normally in society) but the fact remains; he still killed his family. And nothing will undo that, and nothing will justify that.

I was just pointing out that we do not personally know the cause of it all. It's just all terribly sad. There really isn't anything we can get angry over. He's dead. So, all that's left is the sorrow from such a thing happening to his wife and child, and all that we can do is leave judgment to God. We shouldn't condemn him, because I'm sure people out there are ready to condemn you and me for our actions, IA.

I see a gaping hole in all your theories.

If Benoit did in fact have brain damage from wrestling, would that not mean that he would have to acutally GET HIT during wrestling!?
