Yeah, I agree with Iberian. Though, most of what he said was fact rather than a matter of opinon. The funny thing is, I would be willing to bet that no one who posted here saying "emos cut themselves bleh bleh" has ever even properly spoken to an emo. |

Sorry, I assumed we were talking about the more modern definition. IW is right, though, except that lots of emo people still focus on more negative emotions, or at least seem to experience them more than positive ones. I've properly spoken to lots of emos. And gothics too, although local law means they have to be in disguise. |

This is all form wikipedia. Beginning in the media the term "goth", leads to images of Satanic worship, death and other morbid depictions that are generally untrue about the subculture. Most goths believe in open-mindedness, other possibilities and the thoughts that give rise for truthfulness. Some do believe in mystical branches of religion and others believe in paganism. Overall, there are people of every religion in the goth subculture. Another misconception is that the goth subculture as a whole is a religion. This has proved to be untrue. In recent years, the word Goth has often been used to describe a wider social group of youths. These might include people with a tendency to wear black clothes or wear goth-style make up. Often, those labelled as Goths lack many of the characteristics historically associated with the subculture, and are more correctly called mallgoths in the US, Spooky Kids in Britain and gogans in Australia. Many times, scene kids are mistaken for goths due to their tendency to have dyed black hair and wear black clothing. goth really is The Goths were an East Germanic tribe which according to their own traditions originated in Scandinavia (specifically Gotland and Götaland). They migrated southwards and conquered parts of the Roman empire. Two closely related tribes, the Gutar and the Götar, who remained in Scandinavia and are often called Goths1, are separately treated, as Gotlanders and Geats respectively. Contents emo is nitially, "emo" was an abbreviation for "emocore", short for "emotive hardcore", and was coined to describe the music of the mid-1980s DC scene and its associated bands. The most recognizable names of the period included Rites of Spring, Embrace, Beefeater, Grey Matter, Fire Party and slightly later, Moss Icon. The first wave of emo began to fade after the breakups of most of the involved bands in the early 1990s. Starting in the mid-1990s, the term "emo" largely reflected the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo. Bands including Sunny Day Real Estate, and Texas Is the Reason put forth a more indie rock brand of emo, which was more melodic and less chaotic in nature than its predecessor. The so-called "indie emo" scene survived until the end of the 1990s, as many of the bands either disbanded or shifted their style to the mainstream. As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the more mainstream style, creating a style of music that has now earned the moniker "emo" within popular culture. Whereas, even in the past, the term "emo" was used to identify a wide variety of bands, the breadth of bands listed under today's emo is even more vast, leaving the term "emo" as more of a loose identifier than as a specific genre of music. In all of its forms, emo music generally shares some of the same concepts: personal, meaningful lyrics, usually of an introspective nature, and a deep connection with a band's audience. As the chorus of detractors increased, emo came more and more a focus of derision. Like the Goth scene, people who focus on emo music tend to share a dark and emotional psyche that often makes them feel outside the mainstream. They tend to thrive on the emotional ups and downs that are brought out in the music. Detractors often joke for emo fans to "lighten up". funny thing is that emo music is the least complicated music. It only consist of a minor to major trasnistion |

just what I said, I just forgot to mention the mysticism part. by the way, fugazi started out in the mid-80's, and were one of the first emo bands, whose lead singer was the singer for minot threat, who supposedly invented the straight edge movement. and there's a difference between emo and emocore. emocore is kind of recent. what existed before was what is now called Emo Violence (or as some of you prefer: "screamo"). and emo doesn't have to be simple. bands like my chemical romance made it simple a got to the mainstream, but emo can be very good if worked on. but truth is the lyrics and the singing are one of the most valuable things in emo music. well at least it does have any music to support the singing, unlike rap. hehe... btw, you failed to mention anything about fashioncore and emo kids
