What I mean is a maze, where certain parts are blocked off by doors, that can only be opened when a rock is put on a floor switch. At the end of the maze, the final door is locked, and can only be open when certain wall switches throughout the maze, are all in the same position, or turned to same color.

Ya, it's sweet alright. The key to using it in RPGMK is to have two pages on the blocks. One for the water low and one for it rased. Edit: And if your not using water just make it change when you go up or down the stairs. What ever you want. |

The absolute worst puzzles are the no strategy at all ones. Like in Tales of Symphonia when they're in the 2nd desian base and you have to randomly run through the portals til you finish. It took me 3 hours to get it right. |

A bit off-topic, but my favorite game puzzle was in the original Klonoa, where you had to throw exploding enemies into the background, launch over there, and guide them around before throwing them back into the foreground. Take your box puzzles and shove 'em: now THAT'S originality. In that regard, the best puzzles are the ones that use your characters' natural abilities. If IMP was a game and you could store any free object, there would be several puzzles involving removing stones from pillars to topple them in a domino effect to destroy a building, weighing down a platform with assorted crap, etc. Recognize your characters' strengths and make the game around that. There has to be SOME reason why the game stars your main character, right? Here's a tip: never lock an old, wooden door. Nothing is more frustrating than wondering why your uber-god character can't just break down the darn thing. |

If you're reading this, I was bored.

I saw one puzzle I rather like now, in a newb game on kamain called "Home of Yahn". The whole game is rather easily manipulated, but at one point you must race through a maze in 13 seconds. The first time, it's easy. The second time (the end of the game), the maze is the same, but about 20 squares from the end, a freaky pic starts swirling around and a scream erupts. I seriously leapt out of my chair at that... It was awesome. Natrually, this covered the entire screen, so I tried it a few times unsuccessfully before inspiration struck. I thought, "Hey! I can use my almost-nonexistant artist abilties to sketch what it looks like!" So I turned the sound off and drew it out. After all that trouble, I reached the end... Only to find it was unsolvable. I laughed quite a bit about that for some reason. Well, I don't know how interesting all that was, but now it's wasting your brain cells. Live with it. |
