So, a few of you may be aware of my favoritism for Valve Software. One of my favorite games from them was Team Fortress Classic, an official Half-Life mod that was released back in 1999. Even though I was a child at the time, I admired its fast-paced gameplay and wide range of classes to choose from. More importantly, the potential for very competitive gameplay interested me the most. The intense 1v1s between soldiers, the bunnyhopping scouts and medics you only had a small chance to kill before they passed you by, and especially all the grenades you'd have to dodge... And then Team Fortress 2 eventually came along, and boy did they change some things... When Team Fortress 2 was first announced in 2006, the Team Fortress fanbase was greeted to a trailer featuring Pixar-like graphics and very simplified gameplay. While both made me hesitate at first, I nevertheless welcomed it with open arms over a year later, when it was released in October 2007. Even though I hesitated to appreciate the graphics, Valve certainly kept the concept art very stable with the characters and maps. Once the cartoony graphics stopped bothering me, the gameplay was only somewhat satisfying. Bunnyhopping was removed, grenades were removed, all the classes were slower, and weapons did much more damage. This resulted in much slower gameplay and very short battles. And while having less time to react did make battles more intense, the removal of fast-paced, chaotic gameplay anchored all the pros of it. On the brighter side, Valve kept the classes' concepts intact from TFC. And nevertheless, due to my longtime appreciation for the Team Fortress series, I still enjoyed the game. But then the future DLCs came along. If you thought getting two-shotted (along with random crits) was bad enough, Valve began introducing weapons that promoted 100% crits at certain times. So, whenever you encountered someone that's currently shooting 100% critical damage, you usually have no chance to escape or successfully defend yourself. Many other weapons were implemented, making it harder for you to guess what your opponent is carrying (and shooting down any chance of you using any particular strategies). When you thought it couldn't get any worse, Valve then added weapons and apparel that defied TF2's entire art concept, which they once promised to not do. Valve then opened an in-game TF2 store, where most items cost more than they should. Useless apparel was (and still is) as expensive as an independent game. Keys to unlock randomly-dropped crates are $2.50 a pop, and usually you only get a very common item. Yet, fans still bought these things without question. Exploiting this rip-off of an in-game market, Valve eventually made the game free, giving the illusion of being complimentary rather than a clever business strategy. Then I began thinking about the classes and how skill-less they've become. Snipers can one-shot others by shooting them anywhere, thanks to Valve promoting such new weapons. Soldiers and demomen only have to shoot twice at the floor with their insane splash range. Heavies and pyros only have to hold down their attack button and aim at a general direction. Spies can now feign death and escape cloaked and nearly invincible. So on and so forth... ...But then there's the scout, an old throwback that reminds me of the prequel's classic, fast-paced gameplay. He's speedy, requires sharp well-timed aim in combat, and is challenged with the lowest health of any class. The scout is the only reason I continue to play this game, because he's the most challenging to play in such a grinded-down game. (His kills with the scattergun are also so satisfying.) Graphics/Art Concept: 8/10 Gameplay: 7/10 Replay Value: 8/10 Total: 7.5/10 |

I'm more disappointed in the updates after release rather than the original build. |

Indeed, game reviews. Those things that usually have screenshots. Especially when the game is known for its silly pictures and mods than anything else, yep. ![]() Pretty sure that's the whole point to the game.
EDIT - Please don't take me too seriously, Caleb. I'm just being silly, it's nothing against your review. Edited by Naoko, May 1 2012, 09:46 PM.

Ever since I recently lost hope in this game, I've carelessly gone around as a meleeing engineer, and it somehow works most of the time: |
