Well, what do you know, there's a new Naruto game out. And this is the back cover of the game box.![]() I was talking with Tedyz not too long ago and he checks out Gamespot's 7.0 review which states these as good things the game has going for it : * Great core fighting mechanics * Good selection of well-balanced Naruto characters * Lots of extras to unlock. Well after playing this abomination, I must say I have gripes with all of these points. This game has problems. Lots of them. Too many to cover in one post, that's for sure. The first thing the game tells you is that if you want to play with the remote + nunchuk style, you should plug in your nunchuk. This probably says something about the game's target audience, but that screen is easy enough to skip. What's the first thing you check out when playing a new fighting game? The characters you have right? This brings me to Gamespot's "Lots of extras to unlock" point. This game has over 35 characters, however you only start with a pitiful 8. ![]() That's right, there's a lot of stuff to unlock, because you start with NOTHING. The game uses a money system to unlock stuff. You get money after each fight which you then use to buy characters, modes (Survival, Timed, etc) and stages. Another problem suddenly arises : You gain around 300 ryos after each fight when the cheapest characters cost 10 000 ryos and some go up to 100 000 ryos. There's also no other way to get the unlockables than to pay for them, meaning you'll have to win thousands of matches to unlock everything. Not only that, but you have to unlock the items in the shop in order to buy them! The game never tells you what you need to to unlock them either, because after all, everyone will just end up using GameFAQs. But hey, more than "39 well-balanced Naruto characters" should keep you entertained for a while right? That's more than what Brawl has! Well it'd be a nice start if all of them actually were from Naruto. That's right, somehow 4 of the game developers' original characters were slipped in the game while some of the cast that's actually from the franchise is missing. These games always have weird character problems. First Kiba is dismissed because they didn't have the time to put him in, but then Ino who was in previous games suddenly goes missing, though there was time to put in 4 characters that come out of nowhere. What happened here? Besides, most characters kept the same movesets as they had in previous games, meaning very little has been done to balance the game. The most notable difference is Itachi, who went from majorly broken to kinda bad due to getting overnerfed. So, you start off Story Mode to make some cash, hopefully unlock some items in the shop and maybe buy a character or two. The first few missions go fine, beat this guy using this guy or this team, watch long cutscenes with bad voice acting, whatever. Then you realize that you are facing bosses who don't stagger when hit, throw projectiles who deal damage multiple times when they hit you once, break your guard in a couple of hits, are given an attack and speed boost and can only be killed by getting hit with an easy-to-dodge special technique at melee range. What the fuck is this? This game's story mode is Shaq-Fu level. That's all that needs to be said. I can guarantee you that bosses require more luck than skill to beat, especially the final one. So, where did those "Great Core Mechanics" go? They kept the same ones as the previous games of course. The game advertises itself as supporting 4 styles of play, which is cool, but you're at an instant disadvantage if you don't use Remote + Nunchuk, so it's not cool. It's also worth noting that basic, comboable attacks are done by shaking the remote once for every attack meaning your wrists will get sore extremely fast. Not doing anything counts as guarding, making battles rather tedious. It's also nice to note that it takes longer to kill an AFK player than someone actually defending themselves. The game also advertises its 4 player capabilities, however the camera is out to get everyone in those matches as it spins in every direction, making it awkward to control your character and its movements. This game, unlike the previous ones, supports a lagging, freezing type of online play which erases any hope left for competitive play. What does Naruto Shippuden Clash of Ninja Revolution III bring to the table? Apart from competing in the longest game name contest, nothing much. Itachi's not overpowered anymore I guess, though most of the new characters are, and adding new stages changes nothing, as you'll just end up hitting Random seeing how they're all the same. It really is the type of game you buy only because there are more characters than its previous iteration. This one just happens to be even more tedious thanks to the money system. It gets 3/10 from me and nothing more. Edited by Fullmetal, Jan 17 2011, 03:35 AM.

Though I can't really comment on the show itself, having seen very few episodes, the characters in these games really aren't the stealthy, silent assassins ninjas are supposed to be, in fact they're the complete opposite. Most of them are obnoxiously loud and wear clothes that reveal where they're from and who they work for. Talking to your opponent before and during a fight seems to be a commonly accepted duelling rule and using flashy magic is allowed even if it alerts everyone in a perimeter of 10km. I don't get it, it's like the author wanted to make tons of memorable characters but also wanted them to be ninjas and thus they ended up being ninjas, if only by name. If you must know, the reason I rage at these games is that my sister doesn't like the idea of guarding in fighting games, however she's particularly fond of these because the game automatically guards for her and thus these end up being the fighters we play the most despite having Street Fighter 2 and Soul Calibur 2 on the shelf. It's irritating to throw all concepts of skill away and pick a game where everyone has a random chance of winning really. Kinda like when you're the only hardcore gamer in the family but you end up losing at Wii Bowling against your mom. |
