In 2000, a pair of games were released on the Game Boy. They were Pokémon Gold and Silver versions. If you ask any Pokéfans' favorite Generation, they will say either Gen II or Gen III. (GSC = II, RSE = III) I, for one, was hooked on my Gold version. I loved it. ![]() Battling the rival. ![]() Togepi. ![]() This guy. ![]() Gold's Title Screen. Because of many technical problems, Gold and Silver couldn't save after a while. Most people's games lasted about seven years. Nonetheless, Pokémon Gold & Silver versions were one of best-sellers on the Game Boy Color. Nine years later, three Pokémon games called Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum were released. People around the world noticed things reminding them of Gold and Silver. The Pal Park balls, 2 new Eevee evolutions, Rage Candybars being sold out. We all thought that these were clues for a GSDS, or in other words, a remake of Gold and Silver. They did the same thing with the Red and Green versions, so why not Gold and Silver? Well... ![]() ![]() They did. Johto has returned and I need to start this review like, 2 minutes ago! Story You are a 10 year-old child who is asked a favor by Professor Elm: retrieving an egg. You receive a brand-new Pokémon of your choice to follow you and get the egg. After this, you find out a Pokémon was stolen by the rival who you can name. You fight him and go on to get the 8 badges of Johto while fighting a resurrected Team Rocket, looking for their leader. After that, you fight the Elite Four and the Champion Lance. Then, you go back to Kanto, fight their 8 Gym Leaders, go to Mt. Silver and fight the former Champion, Red. Only differences is the new rival and the 3 beasts storyline. Oh yeah, and Kimono Girls are here too. The original storyline in Gen II was very good. Playing it now, in 3D, makes me feel like we've come a long way. I don't know. It was nice seeing the towns and Red Gyarados, and the man who was owned by Lance's Hyper Beam. 8/10 Music Of course, the big part of any video game IMO, is the music. HeartGold and SoulSilver are no exception. All of the music from Gen II was completely remade and new themes are added to other places, such as Cerulean City, Cinnabar Island and even the new Routes 47 & 48. In addition to that, there is an item that changes all the music to the 8-bit soundtrack that we all know and love. This deserves a perfect score. 10/10 Gameplay Simple enough. Train your Pokémon to be the best, like no one ever was. Pick 4 moves, 6 Pokémon and items as well. You can use the touchscreen or buttons on the DS to pick a command. Outside of battle, you can surf in the water, ride your bike or run. You can fly. Smash, climb and move rocks, too. Talk to people, or become an underage gambler. Hmmm... 6/10 Misc. You have the entire world at your hands. Try to battle every trainer using the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection. Play mini-games or trade Pokémon. See battles, boxes or pictures posted by other trainers. This is the same crap you get with D/P/Pt, but this game is packaged with something special... ![]() A pedometer?! This is the PokéWalker. If you have one, you can use this to train your Pokémon. Or find items. It only works on HeartGold OR SoulSilver. You can catch Pokémon too! ![]() Besides this, the Battle Frontier from Platinum is also here. No changes there. 8/10 Replay Value There are many reasons to buy these games. But if you miss Johto, and want to get some Japanese Pokémon on your Platinum version, then get it. I did, and I love it. Mini-games, random battles, nostalgia. I still play this. (Although I have a guide to show me the Japanese translations and stuff...) 9/10 Final Comments It's hard to say goodbye and say hello to these games. Either one is fun. I'll miss Gen II, but I'm lovin' Gen IV right now. My final score? Story: 8 Music: 10 Gameplay: 6 Misc.: 8 Replay Value: 9 Total score: 41/50 Points A- : Great Game |
