King of Games

With Kirby Super Star rereleased on the DS, I have decided to review the original Kirby Super Star on the Super NES. Released in 1996, with 8 full-length games in one cartridge, it will take you many hours to complete this 16 bit gem. The DS version will have extra content in addition to these games. Playing as one player is fun, but there’s also a second player option as well, which makes the game very entertaining, especially playing “hide and go seek” where kirby tries to suck in the second player. There are also some parts of the game that require two players to access, which adds to the experience. The soundtrack is just epic. Each game had its own set of music, and each did not lack gameplay either. You progressed through each game differently. The first two were platforming games, advancing through the levels to reach King Dedede and beat the games. In The Great Cave Offensive, you collected “treasures” which would add up to your point total at the end of the game. The Revenge of Meta Knight was the first game in which this villain was the main antagonist. It was also the first game to feature the Halberd, Meta Knight’s ship. You progressed through the game destroying different portions of his airship, and eventually taking on Meta Knight himself in a one-on-one duel of the blades. In Milky Way Wishes, an evil Kirby-like figure named Marx had his wish granted by NOVA to rule the universe. You progressed through the game collecting abilities rather than sucking in enemies to copy their abilities. Finally, The Arena is a Super Smash Bros.-style game where you take on all the bosses and minibosses in Kirby Superstar. In addition to these games, there are also three minigames. One is the Gourmet Race, where you either race King Dedede to the finish over three courses or try to defeat your best time in each course individually. Another is the Megaton punch, where you take on the CPU in an attempt to beat them at breaking a set of stone blocks. You can also play this game in 2-player mode. Finally, the last game is Samurai Kirby, a game originally released on the NES game Kirby’s Adventure, under the title of Quick Draw. The graphics were cutting edge at the time, and was one of the last games released for the Super NES. The music is just plain awesome, and it sounds more like a symphony than chiptune. Lastly, the gameplay is enough to keep you entertained for hours on end. The only thing that I find lacking in this game is the fact that the Gourmet Race and Megaton Punch could use some extra difficulty. Also, the DynaBlade game could be a little longer, and use some more bosses. I would give this game a 9.5 overall out of 10. |

This game stays one of the bests on the SNES in my opinion. I didn't really like how they made the multiplayer work on DS when you only have one copy of the game (playing with 2 DS' only player 2 has to watch through player 1's DS screen and only uses his DS as a controller) but overall it's still a nice add to the DS library. |
