Waggaman. Neighborhood of teenagers, but so little to do... without a car, at least. For five miles past the neighborhood are nothing else but houses. Nearest place is Avondale, southeast of where I live. They have Winn Dixie, some restaurants, but not that much business. Many of the lots are closed because they ran out of business. But besides Avondale, there's Elmwood, which is on the other side of the river 10 miles away. They have plenty of places. It's just like a city, without the huge buildings. Thing is, I can only see it from the levee. Other than that, I need transportation. Something I can't get every day due to gas money. Kody, my best friend and neighbor, is going to get his drivers license soon. I don't know how soon, but it's about time. He's 18 and a senior at my high school. He's a little late though, because as soon as summer is over, he's going to ITT Tech somewhere. I never bothered asking where. And when that day comes, we're going to be without transportation again. I was talking about this with Kyle (Kody's younger brother; my best friend) weeks back, about what the hell are we going to do until one of us gets a car and our license later on down the road. He told me he was simply just going to sit inside and play on his computer and X-Box 360. I don't get how he could accept that. Just sitting inside for the next 2-3 years just because neither of us have a license nor a car. I really don't get it. Back in the elementary years, we did a lot of things outside. We jumped on his trampoline and played games. But now, they don't have it anymore. We also played dodgeball with their older cousins, but Kyle and Kody's backyard now has a big shed in the way. Sometimes we even explored the forest behind our house, but now a lot of it is torn down. The rest is completely overgrown, ever since the last owner of the woods took his cows with him. We're becoming limited on hobbies. It's understandable what Kyle plans to do. There's only a few things left we can do. One of them, we've been doing for 3 years now: throwing the football. We started doing this because the trampoline broke and the woods were torn down by then. Their shed was built a year or two before that. Recently, we haven't done it in months. It finally got old. So what now? Since Kyle had no interest of outside hobbies, I was thinking about maybe riding my bike again. The last time it was a hobby for me was during a short period in summer of '06, when I would ride a few laps every day in the neighborhood out of boredom. Got old quickly, especially in the hot summer weather. But I did get somewhat of a tan out of it. I also did it for a few days last summer on the levee. Just killing some time riding my bike. One positive thing about it is that it helps improve your leg muscles, which I don't do during workouts. Maybe I can start shooting some hoops again with the basketball goal we have hanging over our driveway. Haven't done that in a long time, about 4-5 years. I don't know where our basketball went, so I guess I got to buy a new one soon. It's just going to feel so lonely doing it, because none of my friends around the neighborhood got the motivation to do something outside with me. Our neighborhood is basically an island of boredom, and most of us are suffering with it. Wish I had a pool. Haha. I remember how I went to that pool party a week least year after 8th grade ended. Winded up having one hell of a sunburn. Every summer I go through has some sort of mood to it. I wonder what it will be this year. Hopefully, I'll have somewhat of a list of things I can do by the time summer comes around. Whatever list I have, it'll have to last until I get a license and a car in a few years. |
