Come on, try to sway me one way or the other on the topic of Gun Control.

I do disagree with hunting and I believe that the only purpose of guns is to kill, which I don't think should be in the hands of citizens. On the other hand, I also believe in supporting the constitution which does state that the right of people to bear arms shall not be infringed.

Come on, I want a well reasoned arguement to help me make up my mind!

i dont feel like getting into a huge discussion about this(esp considering i dont know everything about this topic), but i have to say that if we look at societies where only people like police officers are allowed to carry guns, the death rates go down. and also when the constitution was made it was a different time, when people actually needed to carry those guns, and weve already amended the constitution, so couldnt those be considered going against the constitution

IMO having guns everywhere is a bad thing, but I guess there are a few good points.

Pros:
-People feel safer if they have a gun.
-If the government gets abusive (aka fascism), people can use guns to overthrow it.
-If guns are banned, then only the army, police and criminals (getting them on the black market) will have guns. Meaning you can't do much against serious criminals unless police officers are around.

Cons:
-Highly increases the amount of death by firearms.
-A criminal is most likely to shoot an armed person when he otherwise would've let the victim live.
-A criminal is most likely ready to shoot before you are (taking out your weapon when there's a gun pointing at you isn't a good idea at all)
-Increased risks of accidents.

I'm not pointing out everything, but IMO at least some sort of gun control should be required.

That should be all you need to know to make up your mind.

I think that there should be some kind of age limit on guns, really high, like 60 years old
so that when someone robs a bank the little old lady busts a cap in their ass XD

but seriously, no matter what we do people who misuse weapons will find ways to get them

Really, the best way I can defend guns is similar to one of FM's points.

How does one overthrow an oppressive government without the means to do so?

I dunno honestly. I have no justification for guns except the constitution. Otherwise, I hate them. I hate what they are made for. They do nothing to better society and are used to kill. You could overthrow the government with them, but I do see the gun nuts owning them for that reason and it would be difficult to preform. Alas, the constitution supports there existence. I think I'm schizophrenic...

This is why I believe that there should be background checks, even at gun shows. As for regulation on types of arms, I honestly have no idea. Again, against all forms of guns but right to own them can not be infringed. Its just...ARG! I'm torn because I want to go either all-or-nothing.

Wow. i feel out of place. one of the few that has the facts on this. well, but i generaly am the only pro-gunner in most places.

Fullmetal makes some valid points, but, he forgets many others.

also, the founding fathers supported the right to guns whole heartedly, they knew that disarming the populace is the first step to a dictatorship. nowhere else in the constitution is the right to a specific thing mentioned-the right to guns was that important to the men that made this great nation that they placed a very specific protection in the Constitution

the police can't be everywhere. so people must be able to defend themselves from criminals. a gun acts to level the playing field between a thief and his intended victim. a criminal, in a world without guns, doesn't have to fear being shot by anyone but the police, and can rob and get away with it the majority of the time. they also don't have to worry about who has a gun, and who doesn't. when poeple can own or carry firearms, the thief cannot tell who is armed and who isn't, and that makes even the unarmed safer in the whole. for example, i read an interview with a Florida inmate on the topic of guns. when asked if the government should ban guns, he replied something along the lines of: "Ban guns, i'd love it, then i wouldn't have to worry about being shot at." another thing is that the criminal doesn't care if he breaks the law to rob a person, so why should they care if they are carrying an illegally purchased firearm.
if you look at places such as england, australia, china, and many other countries where their gun rights are infringed upon, the crime rates are obnoxiously high. but look in comparison to states such as florida, texas, and many western states (not california) where gun laws are less restrictive, the crime rates are very low.

take a look here for a while:http://www.nraila.org/ArmedCitizen/default.aspx (yes, it is from the nra, and is somewhat biased, but they are news stories)

another reason i really support gun ownership is i do support hunting and target shooting.

but don't get me wrong. i don't believe everyone should have a right to a gun, including a career criminal, felons, the mentally unstable, or others who pose a threat to society. i agree there should be background checks, they can protect us all from criminals to some degree. but i don't agree with anything else, not the wait periods (look at california, doesn't work), not bans, nothing that takes away a right can protect the citizen.
