yay! Happy Holidays vs. Merry Christmas is just the surface, or is it? Is this actually a war against Christianity and America itself? Were does the 'center' stand on such an issue? Will I kill myself if I listen to another minute of Bill O'Rielly talk about this? Arguement Summaries so we don't need to sort this out: If your on the right side: This is a war against Christian Faith and Happy Holidays is offensive to Christians everywhere. If your on the left side: Can we talk about a real issue now? This is laughable. |

...wut. I use "happy holidays" to save myself the trouble of saying "Merry Christmas, happy new year and have a fun break from work/school", not to anger Christians. In fact, doesn't saying "Happy holidays" kinda recognize Christmas as an holiday? Where's the problem? |

really wish i didn't miss the colbert christmas special. I use Happy Holidays that way I recognize that Christmas isn't the only holiday celebrated in December. I don't celebrate any holidays this month except from the Church of SubGenius: * December 9 The Martyrdom of St Kenny * December 14 Whiny Victimization/Co-Dependency Day * December 31 The Feast of St Lucifer Thank you St. Kenny for your noble sacrifice, whatever it may be (it is the 9th after all). I say Merry Christmas to friends and family I know celebrate Christmas. And I say Happy Holidays to people I don't know, for the sake of people like Crow Evermore, who I say Happy Hannukah to instead. :D And, of course, I say Happy Holidays just to P off Bill O'Reilly. |

everyone at work started the month saying merry christmas but now only one is, everyone else is using 'holidays'. also, i noticed we only have christmas stuff. No (no *censored* way i can spell the jewish holiday) stuff or anything else. Bugged me when someone got mad at me for it. Stop being the 4% minority? |

I say Merry Christmas. If people are offended by it, that's there problem. Besides, being offended by that because you're Jewish or Muslim is pretty silly anyway. To me, that's like being offended if somebody said "Good morning" at 8 PM. |

It's not offensive to say Merry Christmas, it's offensive to completely and entirely disregard another person because they're different or a minority. Most people I know who don't celebrate Christmas aren't offended at hearing it, but when they're ignored or looked down upon. If you're talking to someone you don't even know, it's just kinder to tell them Happy Holidays. If they tell me Merry Xmas first, I say it back because that is what I celebrate, but otherwise I say Holidays. Honestly, it can brighten someone's day to tell them "Happy Hannukah" when they're Jewish and sick of being ignored. It really can. It can also brighten their day when they see places at least decorating with a little 8-candle lamp for the holidays next to the giant sets of Ol' Saint Nick and Jebus and sparkling trees. Really, it doesn't hurt to remember there are other people in this world, too. There's nothing wrong with saying Merry Christmas, of course. It's all fine and dandy, and I follow it too. But saying "that's their problem" to this isn't a whole lot different to saying "that's their problem" to a poor black man in Alabama. Think about it. |

As Naoko said, I don't think anyone is offended by Merry CHristmas. It reminds me of a customer who complained when i said Happy Holidays and that it was disrespecting Jesus and we shouldn't care what the Muslims (because Muslim bashing is still totally okay) think and complained about how they could find it offensive. I told her the little bit of Islam I know that shuts every up (that they do follow many of the teachings of Jesus, they just don't believe he was the son of god/god) and then she was like "oh." and just walked away. You say Happy Holidays to be inclusive, because Christmas is not what everyone celebrates. For example, I do not celebrate Christmas (and because of this many people at work thought I was a Jehova's Witness, I told them I was an atheistic agnostic and then they got quiet). I am not offended by Merry Christmas, but I feel that saying Happy Holidays is better because there are so many. On the other hand, I'm kinda against wishing Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays a month before the December Holidays (all eighty billion of them) but that is a different battle entirely. I might start wishing people happy MLK day in January, but that would feel awkward. |
