And also Legendary powers. According to the pokédex:

Arceus created the universe.
Dialga controls time.
Palkia controls space.
Darkrai controls nightmares.
Cresselia controls dreams.
The 3 pixies control willpower, emotions and knowledge.

I mean, how the hell do you beat time and space? The previous legendaries were just like fire, ice, whatever but the new ones just totally own them. What's better than time and space?
i Believe Celebi already controlled time in 4ever, and Jirachi had a pretty big role too. Plus, Lugia freakin saves the planet, as does Rayquaza, after the birds and Kyogre and Groudon fight a lot.

and what powers do the Latis have?

EDIT - i do indeed have platinum. Also got Pearl for like 10 dollars off....and i havent finished Diamond, or opened Pearl or Platinum....

 I'm pretty sure Celebi only has time travel. From what I get, Jirachi sleeps for a thousand years, then awakes for one week to fulfil wishes and keeps repeating this cycle. They don't seem to have very important roles, in fact Jirachi appears to be trouble more than anything else if someone wishes for something stupid.
