San Franciscans have flocked to Dolores Park in the city to compete in, or watch, what has become an Easter Sunday tradition - the "Hunky Jesus" competition. Officiated by a gay charity group known as the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, which has been active in San Francisco since 1979, the contest pits costumed and usually scantily clad men against each other for the distinction of being declared the most attractive Jesus. Catholics have labelled the annual pageant blasphemous, considering that previous entrants have included "old school Jesus", "surfer Jesus" and "zombie Jesus", an irreverent take on the Easter message of Christ rising from the dead. But the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence insist the contest is all part of their mission to "promote universal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt". ![]() Contest Winner Source. Thoughts? |

This is horrible... And people wonder why most Christians think horribly of gays. =| |

And not all the craziness is on the right, like so many are trying to portray. Everyone's equally offensive and idiotic. :) |

It's funny. Get over it. PETA as People Eating Tasty Animals, Maddox, YTMND, and other offensive things are funny too. Get over it. It's really not that big of a deal. If people get that upset over people dressing up as Jesus, they have other problems. It's just for fun, it's not like it's "OH MY GOD JESUS IT GAY DON'T BELIEVE IN HIM LOLS." I can understand being offended, but get over it and ignore it. They're not hurting anything. =/ This is stupid. Apparently all comedians should quit their jobs, too, because I've never heard a single comedian that didn't say something offensive. Not to mention that most comedians say a lot of things that are offensive. Oy.
You're kidding, right? Like this even has to do anything with the majority of gay people or the majority of Christians in America. Christians think badly of gay people because that's the way they interpret the Bible, because their pastor tells them to, or else because Michael Jackson molested them as a kid. |

Oh, I never, strike that, rarely get offended. That requires you to be attached to something. When I DO get offended, it's cause people insult someone I consider sacred. I don't joke around about Buddha, Mohammed, Yahweh, and so on because people shouldn't joke about such things*, in my humble opinion. And when people emulate a man in such a way, it's insulting to me because it insults him. For Christ's sake, is nothing sacred anymore? The answer is no, apparently not. And while I won't go out and say these people can't do that, or even that I can't understand why'd they do it, it is hurtful, and this group should know all about being hurt. It's a prime example of a double-standard. Either say nothing's sacred or something is. These people get pissed at others for making fun of gays, and then turn around and do this. That's why I call it crazy. That's why it pisses me off. So you may say "nothing's sacred," but when you say that, you're removing your right to be offended. I hope you're consistant, unlike this group. *Alright, I admit to insulting Xenu...but COME ON! It's just so easy... And he's the evil character anyway, so it's good. |

Gay people make jokes about themselves and their own sexuality. Religious people should be able to do the same. Everyone should. It's not like they're having a "reenact Jesus's death" party. They're just dressing up as him, just like people dress up as Buddha. If it was more hurtful, yeah, I'd be bothered. But it's really not that big of a deal, and in the end, they're not hurting anyone, so even if you don't like it, you can't do anything. Too bad. |

Yeah, they do, and so do Christians. Some of them, anyway. If they were just dressing up as Jesus I don't think anyone would care, it's that they're dressing up as him in a way to show off sexually. Thus the term "Hunky Jesus" contest. Jesus wasn't sexual, let alone homosexual. I can't even come up with a good metaphor to show my point... Oh well. No, I can't do anything that says they can't, nor would I if I could. It's their right to act this way. I just find it ironic that people who get so offended are so insistant on causing offense. |

You're generalizing. This is a small group of some gay people, not even all gay probably, and they're being open and having fun about it. Chances are they're not the type that get offended easily. So some gay people get offended (with good reason at times), you have absolutely nothing to say that the people in this group all do the same. |

I don't mean to offend Naoko's political affiliation again but this is just another paragon of what I mean when I say that the left side of the spectrum is running on a lean mixture if you know what mean. I mean yeah we have a few archconservatives out there that stretch the limit but there are a lot more liberals who had the cheese fall off of their cracker. Last time I checked there wasn't a right wing group similar to the ACLU or NLG, the proud supporters of serial rapists, murderers, child molesters, drunk drivers, Russian mafia, Sicilian gansters, Italian hitmen, Colombian drug pushers, and illegal sex solicitors (both gay or straight for that matter) criminals who get away by reason of "mental disease or defect" and of course my favorite- NAMBLA: The North American Man Boy Love Association... who has one notorious story of kidnapping a 9 year old Massachusetts boy, killing him, raping the corpse and dumping the body... and getting the charges dropped due to shitty police work. The first post in this thread also affirms my other strong belief. And anyone on the Pacific Coast please don't take this personally but I have a strong belief in the statement that California is made up of two things... the first is the manipulative money hungry Hollywood assholes and the rest of the state is a land of fruits and nuts... where every fruit is a bit nutty and every nut is a bit fruity. Bottom line with what I'm saying... this is just another example of how homosexuals can be homosexual if thats what they choose or feel, but it always seems that its them, not the straight people that are constantly flaunting it or expressing their sexuality in an unorthodox way. If they want to be treated as equally as straights then they should act it. A lot of the demonstrations and crap they put on displays a hell of a lot more that the desire for equal rights. They want to show everyone that they're "normal" but they keep doing these demonstrations and parades that only end up angering and creeping out society. Do they really expect to be applauded for walking around almost naked and waving their cocks around for the media? Another similar but unrelated example is the Mexican immigrant protest parades back in April of '06. They think they're gaining society's support and attention by marching around Los Angeles screaming in Spanish and causing a borderline riot. And they did get people's attention. Americans started to realize just how many of these *censored* hopped the fence and think they can gain amnesty by mocking the American tradition of the proper immigration procedure. My great grandmother took a test and went through Ellis Island... Now a typical immigrant today curls up in the fetal position underneath the seat in an oversized SUV. The two just don't parallel. |

Yeah...I am generalizing. But we all do from time to time. However, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have been outspoken when it comes their...desire for the Catholic Church to recognize them. I'm guessing because they think it's wrong and offensive. |

Its also because when Ma and Pa of Nowhere, Nebraska turn on CNN, they see these radicals parading around as their savior in a beauty contest. <_< |

I don't think it counts as radical when they're doing nothing political and just having fun by themselves. =/ Besides, if CNN is dumb enough to focus on a Jesus beauty contest instead of stuff that really matters, that's their problem. I can't believe we waste news on these things. |
