Dragon Quest. What an awesome RPG series from Enix (later on by Square Enix). Really, Dragon Quest was really awesome, it had decent music, good story lines (starting from DQ5 and up), cool old school gameplay and turn based battles. It was the shit.

I started playing DQ with DQ8 for the PS2, I loved it, and then, well, played the old ones , liked 'em. I was scrolling through the upcoming Wii titles, and what did I see? Dragon Quest Swords. Of course, it wasn't the old school RPG I thought it would be, but hey, it's DQ, so I decided to give it a shot, and I waited for it to come out.
I went to the video store, rented the game along with Dragon Blade : Wrath of fire (might review this piece of shit someday), and well, got home and started the game up!

So the first things I noticed were the graphics and sounds. The voice acting was decent, and the OST was really amazing, a nice symphonic soundtrack, just like DQ8. Plus, the main theme was there, so I told myself "This won't be bad". Hell was I wrong.

Story : 2/10
Shallow. There's not much detail on the story whatsoever, the queen found a mask, she's wearing it, and you think it's the death bringer who's controlling her, but instead it's just making him go away. You break the mask, and bam death bringer's here. You have to kill him.
There's not much stuff going between the characters either, so overall, the story is lame.

Gameplay : 5/10
Meh, the idea was okay, kind of like an on-rail shooter in the arcades, but instead of using a gun, you're using a sword. To use it, you just swing the wiimote. To focus on one point, press the A button (this is damn useful), and you'll keep attacking the same place.
You can also use your shield to block by pressing the B button, but watch out, your shield can break.
As for spells, your allies use 'em. You've got 3 in all, like previous DQ games, but this time you can only choose one of them on a mission. You've got the Prince, the future Nun, and your father, who's a swordsman. Prince can use some healing spells (he was low leveled so didn't have much spells), the Nun uses attack spells, along with healing spells, and your father uses buff spells.
You also have the ability to use "Mighty strikes", which are the most useful techniques in the game. After you deliver 100 hits, you can use them. Press the 2 button, choose the attack, do the patern they ask you to do, and then you unleash the attack. This is quite useful against bosses.
To move, nothing complicated, hold the up button on the control pad, and there you go, you move foward. Yup, so you press up, fight, up, fight, boss fight, bit of story, go into town, buy items/weapons/armors (watch out though, they're damn expensive). That's the overall game.

Graphics : 8/10
As for the graphics, it all depends on the person. I find the graphics cute, nice cel-shading graphics. The monster designs are cute and ugly at the same time. As for character designs, it looks okay, nothing too awesome.

Sounds : 9/10
As I mentioned at the begining of the review, I find the voice acting quite good. As for the music, freaking awesome. Nice symphonic stuff. As for the sound effects, well, they're okay, nothing more.

Replay value : 1/10
I finished the game in 5 hours (doing a level 3-4 times to gain money, so that's an hour or so more), so the game lasts like 4 hours. After defeating the death bringer, I didn't even want to play it again.

So to conclude, this game had some neat ideas, nice graphics, good music and voice acting, but it failed. The gameplay is shallow, the story is lame, there's nothing happening between the characters.
I give this game a 3/10, and that's just because of the sounds and graphics.

I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS
I think it's safe now to assume that if it's posted in reviews, there's a very high chance that the game sucked balls.

Unless it was crazily mind-blowingly awesome, which is rare.
