http://www.gamesradar.com/us/xbox360/game/...207115724980042 I found this a month or two ago, but I wasn't at HF at the time, so I didn't post it. But, uh, LOL. Some people think too much into things. Just because the main character is a girl means the game has feministic qualities? Well, personally, if game + female = this, I think we're going backwards, not forewards. Think about it. If a game has a female because the female is cool and belongs there, it does a lot more for equal rights than putting a female in the game BECAUSE of female rights. It's like putting a black kid in a cereal commercial just to make the commercial equal, instead of putting a black kid in there because you LIKE having him in the commercial. It's dumb. Basically, uh... People are dumb. Portal is a game, not a cry for equal gender rightsor female empowerment or any of that crap. Oy. Seriously, read the article. It's hilarious. My favourite quotes from the article: "Deconstructing the term "first-person shooter" reveals two fundamental concepts of the game mechanic." "The gun is typically regarded as a phallic symbol of masculine agency," "... the portal is an image of the female sex organs: oval and receptive, and also a metaphorical birth canal through which the protagonist is constantly being born into new trials." Oh, and best of all... "Their boyish voices and small stature makes the turrets seem inconsequential," ... (But, uh, I played Portal, and the turret's voices were definitely female.) "Ultimately, Chell incinerates the Weighted Companion Cube, symbolizing a mental unburdening from the need for approval from a father figure." (.... The Weighted Companion Cube is my daddy? What about Darth Vader?) |

I'll be honest, I haven't played Portal, but even I know that's bull. And I love jumping all over the lib...I mean, neo-feminist movement. But, in the end, I'll support any side that acknowledges this.
