That’s the game I’m reviewing. ;)

Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 is for Wii and for PSP. Now, I know what you’re thinking. The moment I said it’s for PSP, a collective F-bomb probably dropped in all readers’ minds. But don’t stop reading just yet. I’ll give you a cookie if you read it all the way to the end.

Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 (referred to as Heroes from now on) is a World War II first-person shooter. If you didn’t know that, either you haven’t been gaming in the past 10 years or you have Alzheimer’s. And if it’s the latter, you probably won’t want to play this game considering you’ve probably already lived through some of the experiences before… Anyway, Heroes offers 3 distinct types of play. Campaign, Arcade, and Multiplayer. We’ll attack them in that order.

Campaign is your story mode. You are an OSS Agent. Your mission? Kill Nazis. Actually, it’s a bit more complicated than that technically, but honestly, who the (censored) cares? Nazis are everywhere, mission objectives are secondary really. You may activate a bomb on a U-Boat, which sounds cool, but all you’ll be doing is blowing the snot out of Nazis in a linear direction which guides you to the boat. There you set the bomb, and run away, spawning more Nazis. Speaking of spawning, this game has a really bad habit of just throwing tons and tons of enemies at you, and then when you think you’re done, they spawn a bunch more out of nowhere that blitzkrieg your riddled OSS butt. The game’s campaign merely becomes a mindless shootout game before long, not to say it isn’t fun, but maybe an espionage mission or something would have been nice.

WHY CAN’T YOU JUST LEAVE ME ALONE?!?! *cries*

You’ll be running and gunning those dirty Nazi’s with your standard array of WW2 weaponry. M1 Garand, Springfield Rifle, Thompson, Luger Pistol, and so on and so forth. You’ll be holding two guns at a time, plus grenades. Another thing that’s a welcome change (overwhelming sarcasm there) is a cover system you’ll be using more often than not. Simply press down on the D-Pad and you’ll hide from the onslaught of the Nazi’s bullets. However, because of the overwhelming amounts of Nazis at a time, you’ll find yourself only able to pop out of cover for a few seconds before having to dive back in. Health returns after not taking damage for awhile, a la Halo. That can be frustrating at times, but thankfully it’s at a minimum. The graphics are solid for Wii. Frame rate never dips, graphics are just solid overall. Nothing remarkable that will distract you, nothing to annoy you either. Just how I like my games.

You know, it’s getting increasingly harder to enjoy invading French beaches time after time. Oh well, at least this ain’t Normandy.

Heroes’ campaign uses the Wiimote and Nunchuck, and not the Zapper. Well, you might be able to play it with the Zapper, I dunno. It’d be stupid if you did. Anyway, the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo is easily the best of the Wii’s, even Prime 3 doesn’t come close. The game allows you to set any level of sensitivity, the bounding box, whatever. It’s amazingly sharp and precise, almost giving you enough reason to buy this game alone. The only flaw is in Campaign mode, where they add seemingly unnecessary gimmicks to certain weapons. Pump the shotgun? Pump the Wiimote. Wanna rocket somebody? Gotta put the Wiimote on your shoulder. Wanna snipe some SS men? Gotta twist your Wiimote to zoom in and out. All of these features work relatively well, but they feel tacked on and pointless. Also, for some reason, when using a scoped weapon, your Y-Axis aim is severely limited. Don’t know if that’s a problem with me or just a dumb developing move, because if you wanna snipe, you have to be on the same level as your target, which is beyond annoying. Melee is also controlled by shoving forward both the nunchuck and controller. That feels kinda added on too, but, whatever.

Yay for blowing stuff up with the Wiimote!

The next mode on our list is Arcade. It was built for the Wii Zapper, but we should all know the only reason anyone will buy that piece of plastic is for Link’s Crossbow Training. The Zapper sucks, so I assume it’ll suck on this too, though I didn’t actually use it. Anyway, the Arcade mode is a simple on-rails shooter. Progress through the levels you unlock in Campaign mode, blow up the Nazis in any way possible. You have unlimited ammo, but you do have to reload, so you have to time that between attacks. You collect health by shooting little first aid kits. Rack up the kills to get a good score. Graphics are identical to Campaign. It’s a simple fun game and it’s a good way to waste time. Nothing amazingly deep though.

Nazi’s suck, they also bite too.

The last mode is the online. It’s hosted by EA Nation, which makes it automatically better. No friend codes + lobbies + 32 player matches? WIN.

The gameplay doesn’t lag, assuming you’re using a good connection. Graphics look a bit weaker, but nothing amazingly significant. I’ve encountered no hackers so far, or cowardly d/cers. All the annoying control gimmicks are gone, (note I haven’t used the sniper yet, so pardon me if I’m wrong there) and quick melee and sprint buttons are added.

It’s an amazing online experience that makes the game. Best online title yet for Wii. No voice chat though, curse you Nintendo!

Poor Nintendo, completely shown up by another free online service. Again.

Here’s the bottom line, while the game is rather one dimensional and has a few annoyances, the unbelievable controls and online justify the purchase in a heartbeat. It might not in a couple years when these hopefully become standard, but go get it now anyway.

FINAL GRADE: B+
