Wii's Bubble

Wii is probably one of the most fascinating phenemonona in recent gaming history. It's been sold out for almost a year, and not due to short supplies, but merely due to every copy of the Wii selling, 400-500,000 a month.

Posted Image
When was the last time you saw one of these on store shelves?

However, the Wii is consistantly beaten in the realm of software. The best selling titles for Wii are Wii Play and Mario Party 8. Both critically-denounced games. As far as quality games go, Nintendo is seriously lacking there as well. According to the worldwide authority in gaming reviews, Metacritic, Xbox 360 has 80 titles with a Metacritic review score of 80 or higher compared to just 29 for PS3 and 8 for Wii. Let's not disguise it, that's pathetic.

In a way, Nintendo doomed themselves with the way Wii was built. It's architecture is so supremely different from the 360 or the PS3 that it forces developers to choose between 2 consoles and 1. As a result, we never see Nintendo exclusive titles, and PS2 and PSP ports are coming on to Wii at an incredible rate. And, at this stage in time, you see PS2 and Wii teams getting developers second-rate development teams.

Posted Image
Maybe Mr. B was right, it is all about developers.

So here we are, with developers giving Wii a second-rate experience. And you know what no good software on Wii leads to? This little tidbit.

"A Japanese report has revealed that, while Nintendo's Wii may be dominating sales charts around the world, almost three quarters of the install base hasn't picked up a Remote in a long time...67 percent of Wii owners haven't used the system of late."

Source.

So, where does this lead? Quite a simple solution really.

What happens to a console that has no good games and no one plays it? It doesn't sell.

Wii's bubble will burst soon, I expect it sometime next year unless developers really get on the ball. Until then, Wii has a huge problem and reputation. The weakest console in the market in terms of both hardware and software quality.

If that's the case, expect the Xbox 360 to take off and leave the Wii and PS3 in the dust. Wii has not earned it's place as the #1 marketholder. And it won't until it can turn out respectable software outside of Nintendo.

I'd say most of the people who got a Wii are waiting for Smash Brawl, and if that doesn't work, it's pretty much over. Just looking at the shelves in the Wii section makes me sick.
90% of the games are pathetic, unknown of or both. The only decent games are a few Mario games (Party, Strikers, Paper Mario) and maybe Zelda. Just go to any EBgames, Future Shop or whatever, and half of the games on the shelves are mediocre games based on movies. Ratatouille, Meet the Robinsons, whatever. Cooking Mama? Seriously?

If they don't come out with some good games, it's pretty much doomed. And Mario Galaxy, which is supposed to be a strong title doesn't seem all that good, judging on screenshots and trailers.

Agreed.

Wii has 8 decent titles compared to the 360's 80? That's what we call inexcusable.

Geh. It sounds to me like Wii and PS3 are pretty much in the same field with good games - for a well-rounded gamer, PS3 has a lot of games coming out recently or pretty soon that are supposed to be pretty good. Some are shared with 360, some are exclusives - but hey, the PS3 has FF, and while XIII has a chance of going to the 360, I've heard that there will still be FF PS3 exclusives. Plus the PS3 is supposed to be coming out with some cool online stuffs - like Home, possibly? Meh. As for Wii... Brawl, basically. I don't know of any other game I really would want to play - Mario games, yeah, and Zelda games, but there's no Zelda exclusive to the Wii yet - and Zelda is the biggest reason to buy for me. So yeah, for me and for a lot of gamers similar to me, the PS3 and Wii are pretty equal - PS3 has crappy price, but more games I'd play. Whee.

Of course, this doesn't apply if you mostly play adventure-y type games. Nintendo has a lot of those, but not a lot of shooters, RPG's, or other stuff. If you're not obsessed with Miyamoto, then Nintendo might not be your favourite system. I know I used to be, but I've grown and so have my gaming interests. (I'm not saying Nintendo is kiddy, I still love Nintendo. But I, and many other gamers, do sometimes move away from Nintendo as they get older/get more into gaming/etc. Not everybody does. Greh.)

Yeeeah. I'm not really into Xbox, but it's got the most right now, I guess. I really want a PS3 and a Wii, though. Once I have more money and they both get cheaper, that is.

Mreeeeeeeeh. Video games required for living.

Smash Brothers, i agree, is what most people will be waiting for and maybe mario. Mario kart when that comes out should boost sales and Guitar Hero 3 should be a big seller. Other than that...um..-shrug-

Why am I still here?
I hate how true this is. *looks over at dusty wii*. The only console I've been playing recently is my N64 and possibly Dreamcast. Yes the Wii is great, but maybe everyone was right...its just a novelty. To many people want graphics, and nintendo didn't preform well in that department. If the PS3 wasn't failing so hard I'd be depressed right now.

It's not just a novelty and people don't just want better graphics, only the narrow minded gamers want better graphics>gameplay.

It's just the lack of games.. we need more decent games.

And more good games aren't going to happen because the publishers cater to the graphic-whore market.

Well Nintendo does have more Publishers interested now than the Gamecube era..if the Wii gets more popular then maybe more Publishers will want to chip in and make games for Nintendo.

And pass up a PC/PS3/360 port? Highly unlikely, unless Wii software starts selling through the roof, or even moderately, which hasn't happened.

The thing is, a lot of those games have good gameplay too. A lot of narrow-minded gamers think the Wii is superior simply because it's Nintendo. To a lot of people, yeah, it IS a novelty. Not just the people who want great graphics. Right now, the big popular games on Wii are basically... Well, TP. And I guess there's Trauma Center, Mii, Mario games/Mario Party, etc. There are others that are moderately popular but TP was probably the big selling point. Playstation has big sellers like GTA, MSG, RE (may be on Nintendo but it's still primarily a PS seller), and let's not forget FF - plus it has a ton of little Nintendo-esque adventure games, they're pretty simple and maybe not as good as Mario/Zelda/etc, but they're still really fun. (Shorter too, unfortunately.) And no, PS3 doesn't have that great of a lineup currently, but their lineup seems to be improving faster than the Wii's - still, we have Brawl coming up.

Yeah, Playstation has a monopoly on crazy graphics, but that doesn't mean it's all just graphics - a lot of those games are really good, too. Just like Nintendo has fun games with good graphics. Both consoles have both. The major problem with the PS3 is the price - if it wasn't for that, there's a TON of gamers out there who'd have one - nearly every rounded gamer I know would get a PS3 if it was cheaper. (By rounded, I mean non-fanboy - someone who plays multiple consoles.)

Excuse me, but I play more than one console, and I don't see much potential in PS3 at all.

MGS4 and maybe FFXIII (I don't really like the way FF is heading, so we'll see) are the only games I see of any interest at all on the horizon. And both of those could end up on the 360. As you bring up.

"Playstation has big sellers like GTA, MSG, RE (may be on Nintendo but it's still primarily a PS seller), and let's not forget FF"

GTA and RE are both coming to the 360, GTA with bonus content for the 360. MGS and FF haven't been confirmed for 360, but hinted at.

And for the record, PS3 "extras" aren't enough to make me go out and spend money on an entire console, whether $600 or $400.

1st party Sony titles are good, but not spectacular. Halo and Fable beat Killzone and God of War any day. And I don't think I need to mention Nintendo's 1st party titles...

As far as I'm concerned, 360 beats PS3 in virtually every way. And this "fastly improving lineup" seems invisible to me.

Oh wait, that White Knight game looked cool. Add that to the PS3 list.

PS3 is suffering from everything they're involved with being overly-expensive, while Wii is suffering from everything they're involved with being overly-cheap.

Two very different problems.

meh, its only the beginning of the wii's life. they still haven't discovered the full potential for the system. don't you remember the same thing happened with the DS? Sure they had Super Mario 64 DS, but you could easily compare that to Twilight Princess. I think the Wii has had quite a good few games out. Trauma Center, Red Steel, Wii Sports, Mario Strikers Charged, Mario Party 8, Super Paper Mario, Twilight Princess, WarioWare Smooth Moves is even good. Dont you remember the beginning of the DS's life? we finally started getting good games nearly a year later with the release of Nintendogs and later in the year all the WiFi games. Give the Wii a chance. We're still waiting for Wii Fit, Wii Chess, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart Wii, and Brawl.

and i want to try cooking mama >_>

With Nintendo it's just good that they are starting to get some big brands in, Guitar Hero for example is a big seller.
But yeah Smash Brothers at the moment is the only game bar that i'm looking forward to.

And on the PS3 issue, i don't see why people would buy one when the Xbox360 is better, has more games and is cheaper.

Storm - so, basically, with my past two posts in this topic, you basically reiterated half the stuff I said. Yay.
"Some are shared with 360, some are exclusives - but hey, the PS3 has FF, and while XIII has a chance of going to the 360, I've heard that there will still be FF PS3 exclusives."
"I'm not really into Xbox, but it's got the most right now, I guess."
"The major problem with the PS3 is the price"

So, yeah. I don't see any disagreement between my posts and yours except our tastes in games. I never said that the PS3 was better than the 360, I agreed with you in the first place when you said the 360 was way ahead.

I thought that was still happening with the DS? It seems to me like it only has maybe 5 good games, and now there's PH. Yay Zelda!

Well, hey, I don't see why people would buy a Wii over the 360, either.
