My Thoughts On The Zelda Series; and its players

Zelda, one of the most successful franchises, and yet another creation of Miyamoto. Quite a few people now notice the repetitiveness of the series since Twilight Princess had too much hype. None of the games are bad, yet many people have started picking out the tiniest flaws and eat away at them. People complain it's not modern enough(not one of the tiniest flaws previously mentioned), so what do they want added? Orchestrated music. But one of the best things about Zelda's music is the transition. If it was orchestrated, that couldn't happen. Still, I would love to see some orchestration in cutscenes. How about voice acting? Everyone loved Navi, right? Okay, so much for that, how about a different set-up? Oh, The Wind Waker, Zelda II, and Majora's Mask. No, wait, buncha people complained about those, too. 'Cause you want something different as long as it stays the same, right? Voice acting, you'd love it, but you hated it before. Being different, highly criticized as 'bad' because they were different. Oh darn, MM only had four dungeons. Look past that, and you'll see its amazing mood, great story, and extreme depth for the time. Wind Waker, oh it's cel-shaded. Boo hoo, now that I whine about the GameCube being too weak to effectively pull off lifelike graphics, I whine when they take a different approach, and remove the lifelike. How about Zelda II? It was a side scroller! Oh, no, so half the games were top down, and half were side scroller? It could have gone either way. Zelda II wasn't even bad, it kicked most other NES game's asses, and you know it, but since it's a different Zelda, it was bad? Zelda II was easily the hardest Zelda, and what Zelda fan doesn't want a harder Zelda for once? Not these fans, because it was on Zelda II. Where's the logic in that? All the people whining about what Zelda needs to fix has been fixed, yet you whine when they do it, so they stop. The Great Sea was a lot less empty than TP Hyrule Field, wasn't it? Oh, wait, Wind Waker was cel shaded and not in Hyrule, so it's still worse. Maybe if you wanted them to change Zelda, you'd let them for once. Think about that. They listen to the fans.

I agree with that 100%.
My friends who play zelda always say that wind waker sucks bc its cel-shaded,but it's actually a really great game.
It's like every other zelda just cel-shaded,and if you dont like a game bc of how it looks then you shouldnt even be playing games.

Yes, I've gotten that, but at this rate no one's going to be happy if they keep up the same old boring stuff.

Nintendo: "HOKAY LAWL now we make giant sea!"
Fans again: "ZOMG TOO MUCH WATER I IZ DROWNINGZ WTF NINTENDO"

You did not just diss TP. I know you didn't, because if you did, you will regret saying that.

Now, as for orchestration, they transition well. Have you ever played a game with orchestration in it? Final Fantasy does a dang good job of it.

Voice acting would be awesome for all the other characters. The problem with Navi is he flew around with you EVERYWHERE and would point out obvious tips like "Use your shield to defend!" Imagine TP with voice acting, and alot of the characters would be brought to life even more so.

Anyway, I have no problem with change. As far as Windwaker, the art style fit well with the sailing theme, but guess what? I didn't like the sailing theme. I really don't like water in my adventure games at all, actually...

As for Majora's Mask, I loved it.

Anyway, let's be honest here, Windwaker and MM didn't "revolutionize" Zelda. You still go to the dungeon, do random puzzles, find mini-boss, beat mini-boss, get new item, use that new item to progress in the dungeon, beat the boss with the new item. Same old tired formula.

Zelda II, I didn't play much, to be honest. But that was like...83 years ago. Give people a break, sheesh.

Hyrule field was beautiful and full of potential though. Perhaps if they plugged in random people in the field to make you do random quests for stuff a la Elder Scrolls.

As far as the sea...it was a sea. Sure you could fish and stuff, but it felt really restrictive, to me at least. Sailing for two hours to an island where I could actually do something and praying that those random sharks don't attack me, yeah, not my style.

And lastly...

"Maybe if you wanted them to change Zelda, you'd let them for once. Think about that. They listen to the fans."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...

I'm sorry, I meant to say, if you've been paying attention to Nintendo news as of late, Nintendo doesn't care about the hardcore gamer anymore, or so it appears. No voice chat, crappy online (Xbox did better), a slew of bad casual games and mini-games replacing good core games (See: Project H.A.M.M.E.R.), and Miyamoto pretty much said there's not a market anymore for big epic games like TP.

The moment they dump Smash Bros. for mini-games, I'm jumping ship.

So, yeah, my thoughts. Zelda desperately needs CORE change. Not a gimmick, a serious change.

Maybe a jump to the future would do Zelda good...

Few things. Yes, I did diss TP. It wasn't good enough. It was just OoT, except worse. Orchestration, they've said that's the only thing that's stopping them, so obviously, they can't do it. Voice acting. If Metroid can pull it off that well, Zelda can do it easily. There's bigger things they need to worry about first. DId I say they revolutionized Zelda? Hmm, wrong choice of words, I guess. They uh, changed it. Did something different. Kept the working core, changed the repetitive outer shell. Zelda II, it was bad. Being old doesn't matter. Look at Super Mario Bros. Did that define platformers? Uh, yeah. Is it considered one of the best games ever? Yeah, again. Is it old? Yup. You're way overexaggerating the sea. Besides, they fixed it in PH. They made it more exciting and smaller. So, that's pretty much over. No voice chat and crappy online...so? Should a game be remembered from its online? No. Halo 3 is being said that it's going to be the best multiplayer experience. So what? I want the actual game to be good. Metroid. Bad multiplayer, amazing singleplayer. And they're amazing games. Voice chat? Big deal again. Do you really need it? "Lol, I fragged you!" Worth it. Sure, you can discuss strategy and all, so what do you know? They'll do it for the games that need it. Once again, overexaggerating. Hunters had Voice Chat, D/P did too. Biggest two. And uh, D/P has what, six million units sold? That's real small. Replacing hardcore games? What exactly was the reason H.A.M.M.E.R. was canceled again? Bad minigames? I agree with that, but most aren't even from Nintendo. Zelda really doesn't need core change, it just sorta needs to be brought into the present.

Eh, you're entitled to your opinion on TP. Only reason I liked OoT more was because of the role music played in it.

Actually, I believe Koji Kondo said it wasn't "necessary" or something of the like for TP in an EGM interview. He said he could do it for future projects when it's "necessary." Problem is, it was necessary for TP, maybe even a nice feature for WW.

As far as voice acting, I agree. So Zelda should have voice acting.

Bigger things like...?

Nintendo could stand to truly "revolutionize" Zelda and change the core a bit. Granted, the core "works" but I just can't see myself doing the exact same thing 10 years from now.

Zelda II was bad...? I thought you were making the case for how good it was... Anyway, point I was trying to make, is that it was 10 years ago, forgive the angst of people.

Way over-exaggerating the sea? Yeah, I suppose I'm exaggerating the time, but it's a fair hyperbole to make my point.

Yes, yes it should. Just like some games should be remembered for local multi-player or single player. Don't make the arguement that online is irrelevant.

Games like BWii and MoH:H 2 are all games BEGGING for voice chat. Voice chat is required practically nowadays for a good online experience. But again, guess what? No voice chat plans. And don't even compare handheld voice-chat to console... Especially with games like Pokemon and MPH.

HAMMER was cancelled to free up room for developers to produce casual games.

"Insiders close to development studio NST allege to IGN that the software company's Wii action title, tentatively titled Project H.A.M.M.E.R., has been terminated by publisher Nintendo. Sources further claim that the team formerly working on the title is now underway with one or more efforts that fall into the "expanded audience" lineup of games."

Later on, the "rumor" was pretty much confirmed by the IGN crew as being canned to make room for crappy mini-games. Which brings me to my next point...

Bad mini-games...we all know that the Warioware franchise is far from anything satisfying beyond an hour or two with it. Maybe the term I'm looking for is casual games. Game like Brain Age, Wii Fit/Play/Sports, Big Brain Academy, Mario Party, and the aforementioned Warioware. Most people wouldn't mind these games in small doses, I know I wouldn't, but cramming the market with them isn't good. And those 3rd party games aren't helping either...

Judging by Nintendo's financial success with this (untested and fickle) market, it makes buisness sense to pursue the casual games. All I'm saying is what Miyamoto-san himself said.

"Well, I think a lot of people who bought the Wii are not necessarily the types of people who are interested in playing that kind of game. And a lot of the people who would want to play it [due to chronic shortages of the console] can't find a Wii! But mostly, I think it's that there are fewer and fewer people who are interested in playing a big role-playing game like Zelda".

I'm tired right now, so I'll address one point. Miyamoto said that because sales were lower than expected in Japan, because they're smart enough to realize Zelda is getting stale.

Yeah, the sales were slow in Japan. That's why Nintendo thinks casual games are the way of the future.

That means expect extremely simple games to be on the increase, and good, er, hardcore games on the decrease.

Zelda II was a pretty good game, it is very difficult though, and requires immense skill. I myself do not take kindly to hard games. That is why i dont like MM, so sorry :( its just too hard, and the time limit makes me feel pressured beyond control. I still have yet to beat the first metroid prime even, the only metroid game i have ever owned, because i had gotten stuck at the omega pirate, died about 17 times, and gave up. As everyone knows, my card got wiped, and i got bored of the game.

EDIT - Just to say, FHQ has a more whacked opinion of Zelda than myself. Out of the 4 3D Zelda games: MM, OoT, WW, and TP, he rates OoT 3rd best, or for the pessimists out there, second worst. WTF!
