![]() You choose to play as either Sonic or Eggman's team, and then conquer the world, or save it. Yay. Story (7/10) Alright, so it starts with Dr. Eggman entering a military building to find their top secret weapon, but instead finds Shadow the Hedgehog, who offers to help him obtain world domination using a huge cannon located in outer space. But to be able to fire it, they must use the Chaos Emeralds as power source, so they end up enlisting Rouge the Bat's aid to find them. Meanwhile, the good guys (Sonic and Tails) try to prevent them from getting the emeralds, while, Knuckles is searching for the pieces of the Master Emerald he shattered in order to stop Eggman from stealing it. It's the usual "Stop-the-bad-guy's-plan" story, but it's not that bad. Gameplay (7/10) The controls are okay, but there's one MAJOR problem. The freaking camera angle. It looks like it's always zooming on your character, so you have to stop and press the L or R button to make it turn slowly so that you can actually see your surroundings. In another game, that probably wouldn't be such a big problem, but in this one, most your score at the end of a level is based on time. Stopping to turn the camera around makes you lose precious time and speed. The B button, which is the default attack button, is also used for other skills like Knuckles' ability to see hidden items. So you have to stop AGAIN, press the Y button to browse through the stuff you can do with the B button, and then use it. Audio (5/10) The voice acting sucks, and the music is good in a few stages only (mostly Sonic's). Knuckles' stages always have some weird rap songs about having to protect the Master Emerald, which he shamelessly shattered instead of taking it back from Eggman. Yeah, that makes sense. And I have no idea on how to describe the music in Rouge's stages, except that the background music looks like what a bunch of 12 years old girls would sing to try to sound sexy or something. Shadow, Eggman and Tails' background songs are pretty average. Graphics (9/10) A good improvement over the Dreamcast version. Nothing to say on this one. Difficulty (10/10) There's no real problem with getting through Story Mode, but if you want to get through the game 100%, you'll certainly have problems. There are 180 emblems to get. You get one every time you complete a stage for the first time, and when you complete extra objectives they give you for the stages. After that, you get a bunch of them for getting all A ranks on all the objectives. And if that's not enough, you have to play some sort of side quest where you have to raise those blue things named "Chao" to get about 9 emblems. Long story short, this could keep you going for MONTHS. Overall (6/10) This game isn't bad, but it could've been so much better. You don't play as Sonic and Shadow enough, and too much as Rouge and Knuckles, and their levels can be summed up as following radar signals to find pieces of the master emerald. The Chao raising side quest is TOO FREAKING LONG, and you end up getting bored of the game before you even get half the emblems. Conclusion: Get some better voice acting, and totally change Rouge and Knuckles' roles in this game, because right now, they're useless and boring. The Good: -The Sonic and Shadow stages are entertaining, and the best parts of the game. -Sonic's background music is usually excellent. -The graphics are good. The Bad -The voice acting could've been MUCH better. -Tails and Eggman's levels are boring -Knuckles and Rouge's level are HORRIBLE. Mix that with their background music, and they totally SUCK. -The camera angles are messy and sometimes hard to deal with. -The enemies are all the same, boring robots. Zero originality. |

meh, i'd give the game a 6/10 why did you give the story such a high mark? I really hate how with the new sonic games, they try to make sonic's storyline mature, "oh noo he blew up the moon" "oh no that black hedgehog has a gun" |

The fact that they let you play both sides earns it a few points. And I'm not comparing it to older Sonic games, simply because I never played them long enough to make an opinion out of them. |

Dude i love that game. It was like the one reason i wanted to get a GC right when it came out. I had all my friends that lived around me into that game(even Caleb). About the audio,Shadow's level "radical highway" had like the best background music to me. |

It isn't one of the worst games out there, but it could've been a thousand times better. Gamefaqs even put it in its Top 10 Gamecube games. It's one of the first 3D Sonic games, and thus fans had great expectations. It simply had too many flaws. ONE hit and you have to start the whole level again to have a decent rank. Rouge and Knuckles' stages are utterly useless. Remove all their levels completely and the story isn't even affected, because they have no role to play in the plot. I can count the number of different enemies on ONE HAND. Flying robots, walking robots, blue things with tentacles in space, ghosts and those weird faces in one of Eggman's stages. Real creative right? The chao raising mini game is too long and boring. Eggman and Tails' stages are simply not interesting, the voice acting sucks and 180 emblems is simply too much. The rewards for completing the game 100%? New costumes for 2P mode and a 3D version of Green Hill Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 1. Better than nothing I guess. As soon as you start the levels on the space colony, the game gets boring. All the levels look the same, and they all suck. Open the gamecube menu and look at what it says about the game : High speed battles with SONIC and SHADOW. Too bad, they're the characters you play the less as, and the other characters' levels are all but high speed. The good stuff in this game: Sonic and Shadow's levels, and the multiplayer mode. That's all I can think of, and that's what got me to buy this game. At least Sega innovated and put songs with lyrics in some of the stages. |

I don't know why you're striking at one of my favorite games with such a strict rating. I don't get how you pull a 6/10 out of your ass when most of the sections you rated were well over 6. The only reason why Rune got me into this game was the gameplay. You're talking about the camera the almost the whole freaking time. Then you complain about the simplest crap in this section. You might as well list all the simple, negative things about the gameplay. Listen, I don't know about you, but I loved the Chao-raising. That's pretty much why I played most of the levels just so I can buy some fruit and stuff for them! It was pretty fun for me. . . All the levels suck? Seems like you're going the wrong way without giving much information on your reasoning. Not everything was great, but most of it was, in my opinion. I rate this a 9/10. |

The thing I enjoyed the most about that game was the music. Shadow's theme was awesome. It still is. |

So the camera angles are not important? It's not important to freaking see what you're doing? I didn't even mention that after you turned the camera, as soon as you move your character, it goes back to where it was. Having to press Y to switch the action the B button does was pointless. Let's take a look at Knuckles' actions with B, since he has the most along with Rouge. 1) Punch, which is the default B action 2) Dig, which can be done by jumping then pressing B, or just B if you're already on a wall 3) Whistle, which doesn't do anything unless you're near a pipe, but then again when you are, B becomes Whistle automatically. The only use for this is when you're in the Chao Garden, your Chao will run up to you if they like the character whistling. 4) Sunglasses, which reveals invisible items. This is needed mostly in the Hard mode missions, where a bunch of emeralds where invisible, but as soon as you jump, the sunglasses are turned off. What makes browsing through this pointless is that a lot of buttons on your controller are left alone, and could've been used instead of having to stop to activate the scope/sunglasses.
I'll make a list of it if you want. -The voice acting sucks -180 emblems is way too much for the rewards they give you in the end. -You want to know why I say all the space colony levels suck? Here it is: In the levels where you were actually on the planet, the levels are "original", meaning you aren't always doing the same crap over and over again like you are in the space colony, and sometimes the music is good, too. The space colony's background music is so unoriginal, you forget it's there. Everything original the game had before has vanished, and all the game is trying to tell you is "dude, you're in space lol" so in about every level, you have to deal with gravity, like Tails getting sucked out of the colony by an open window, Eggman being able to fly using his hovering device and Sonic having to press switches to be able to walk on the ceiling. At first it's nice to see new things, but then you realise that you're gonna be doing this during the whole level. You look at the first stages, who last around 2-3 minutes, and you don't get bored of them even after playing them a few times. But in the space levels, you end up wondering if you're ever gonna see the end, even when they're like 5 mins long. -Most of the flying robots can't even attack. They're just there to increase your score. -You lose all your rings with one hit, and only 20 drop on the ground for you to pick them back, which means good luck if you wanna have all A ranks on all the levels, since rings play such a big role in your score at the end. -The voice acting may be bad, but the lines the characters say are equally bad. Here's a few I can think of. -You're fighting a giant final boss. Sonic and Shadow go all DBZ and you have a kick ass background song. The whole planet is depending on you. And then Shadow, just to kill the atmosphere says "HERE I COME YOU CREEP!". I know they're trying to keep the game rated E, but about anything than "you creep" would've been better. -After Shadow steals a Chaos Emerald, everyone thinks Sonic did it (because you know, it's hard to make a difference between black and blue these days) , so Sonic gets mad at Shadow and then both of them go around calling each other "faker". The two "coolest" characters around, throwing poor insults at each other. Wow. -Amy doesn't play any role in the game, except for running after Sonic and Tails and telling them to wait for her, or yelling at them for not taking her with them or whatever. -Tails has self esteem issues, and seems to view Sonic as some kind of God instead of a friend, and says stuff like "Sonic asked me to do something for him for the first time! I won't give up!". It's like the makers of this game were checking out a dumb/corny line dictionnary searching for which ones to put in there. -Alright, Knuckles and Rouge's stages. Well first of all the music sucks, but that's because I'm neither fan of rap or Britney Spears-type music so that's an opinion. The problem with Knuckles' background songs is that you pretty much don't get what he's saying. They even had to make a FAQ about it on GameFaqs. No joke. Rouge's background music doesn't have lyrics, so yeah. About the levels themselves, well you're basically running around, waiting for your detector to start flashing. And when you ask the flying TV screens for hints, you don't get a lot of points for finding the emeralds, and you want all your points because you need to have all A ranks. And in the last levels, who happen to be the largest too, you really need luck to have a A rank, because moving around the level takes a long time, and the detector flashes for only 1 emerald at a time, so you end up having to play those levels over and over to learn the spots where the emeralds can appear. Oh, and their last try for something original in the space levels was to reverse the TV screens' hints, so basically you have to search where they tell you not to. Why they're reversed, I don't know, and they don't tell you either. -Eggman and Tails' stages are boring. You wander around in your robot/mech/whatever and you kill some more robots who can attack or not, so just mash that B button and you'll have no problem clearing their stages. The fact that you lose all your rings by getting hit once doesn't help, since their levels contain less rings than Sonic's and you're both bigger and slower, so an easier target. There really isn't much to say. Run, lock-on, fire. Rinse and repeat. Over and over again. -The Chao raising mini game is longer than the game itself. This minigame is all about Chao stats, and if yours sucks at running, then you have to get another one, since it's pretty much the most important stat. Remember when you left your gamecube running all night so you could get Mewtwo on SSBM? Well this looks a lot like it. The thing is, stuff happens in the garden only when you're there. If there was other stuff to do in there, of if it didn't take that long, it wouldn't be that bad. But just having your Chao evolve takes 3 hours of garden time, and there's NOTHING to do in there. And the annoying music from the first garden you get gives me a headache after 20 mins, so yeah, just turn off the sound while you're at it. You absolutely NEED to evolve your Chao to stand a chance in the harder races, so if you want those emblems this is cannot be avoided. And if you hate your Chao's face just cover it with a paper bag or something. -The boss battles could've been more original, or at least fight other characters than the ones who have the same moves as you. Apart from boss robots, Sonic only fights Shadow, Eggman only fights his own "Egg Golem" and Tails, and Knuckles fights Rouge and a weird, rainbow colored ghost. You'd figure Sonic would fight Eggman at least once, since he's the main villain, but no, let Tails handle it, since they both do the same thing, except the one that's player controlled has a brain. The last battle between Sonic and Shadow sucks, and can be summed up as running on a bunch of platform in space and try to hit each other. Sonic can wrap this fight easily, since he has the bounce bracelet, which gives him an unblockable attack, while all of Shadow's attacks are easily blocked, so you have to wait for Sonic to use a special attack and roll into him, but the camera angle kicks in and makes you miss most of the time. The 3 boss battles involving guard robots are pretty much the same, except that the one Rouge fights only flies and cannot land. -The Kart racing minigame's controls are pretty weird. Holding A makes you go forward, but you can't turn correctly, so you have to stop holding A, then press it again and hold it, and you're in turn mode now, but you lose speed and you can hardly control your kart. You can also play this minigame in 2P mode, but you can't do 1v1. There's always 4 computer players with you. I'll probably add some more stuff later, this is just the basics. |
