And it was a request because we were getting pretty un-active and he was worried. Some of you guys are taking this all wrong, and you need to calm down.

Caleb, I get what you're saying, and I agree that forums shouldn't have to make their members post. However, I believe you could have said it a little more politely and a lot more effectively. But what is done is done.

The activity on the forum seemed to increase with the member voting awards thingy. Maybe we just need something new to liven things up.

People are posting more, but seeing a whole bunch of arguments is probably deterring new members.

Now, let us look back upon the post which ;'s mouthpiece, Naoko, made not too long ago, located here.

Quote:

First off. START POSTING MORE. Post TOPICS, post REPLIES, whatever. Post more, people. Panther's getting reeeeeeeeeally upset over it.

Yep, here it is. Whilst you are not saying "Post more or else you die," it sounds kind of . . . well, almost offensive. Like, "Post here or else." Simply saying casually, "Hey guys we need to keep up activity levels, so please post more," would have sufficed.

Quote:

Panther also says he's tired of trying to make the forum more active and posting topics and you guys aren't pitching in enough to make your own topics. Post more topics and make the place more active.

Also true, but the way it is worded surely could upset people. There's an art of language, something which is best learned. One could have said this in a less imposing way, and still gotten one's point across.

weird how I am one of the ones who aren't taking this all the wrong way, me being the person who usually does just the thing.

Inactive? I was gone for a day and there was a buttload of new posts from members.

Also, seeing as how summer is coming along, you shouldn't be surprised if members start not showing up. I know I will be much less active this summer.

A week or so ago got pretty unactive. We all noticed it. Well, Panther, Fullmetal, and I noticed it, at least.

Fine, but there was no reason for people to cause a fight over it. ESPECIALLY after it was explained in many posts afterwards, which I already quoted some.

Who?
I think a good way to get people to post more is to do more with the rupees. You have to give people a motivation for posting. You ask them to post and they think, "What's in it for me?" I've been to forums that have had a lot of cool things for posting.

A Super Smash Bros. forum that I post at has trophies that you can buy with "coins" you earn from posting. It's nothing big, but it makes things fun.

I think you should have it so you can buy items based off of Zelda games. You could have small items like the Kokiri Sword for cheap and then the Master Sword would be worth much more. Then the Triforce would only be something that people with a very large amount of rupees could buy.

That's just a suggestion. Maybe you could think of a way that the items could be useful as well. Maybe some kind of subforum set up for battles and the person with the most useful (expensive) items would have the upper hand in winning.

I don't believe that anyone was demanding anyone to post. I didn't take it as a demand anyway. Just a request.

Here it was, posted by Naoko.

Quote:

Panth told me to tell you.

Told you to tell us? Already, to some people, this would give a feeling of being commanded. "Ask" would have been the nicer word.

Quote:

First off. START POSTING MORE.

Caps = yelling.

Quote:

Post more, people. Panther's getting reeeeeeeeeally upset over it.

Is this some sort of guilt trip? Or what? By now a lot of people would be annoyed.

Quote:

Fourth. Get off of Runescape for an hour a day and play.

And by now many people are thinking "*censored* you."

That would have been like me telling my members to stop playing Mario Kart so much.

---

I ran a very successful and large forum before I gave it up. As a former admin, I'm suggesting you choose your words more carefully. That's all. That was and is my WHOLE point. An admin should not seem like he is demanding things of his members (besides following the rules). The way the topic was worded came across as bossy to many people. I realize it wasn't intended to be like that, but that's how it was obviously written (judging by the response it created).

I think everyone understands that Panth was not trying to be bossy. So now that the miscommunication is cleared up, we should all move on.

Sorry, but this is one time i have to disagree with Troopa. No one said that we are required to post more.

It was very much implied. The proof is the result.

And I know Naoko and Panth realize this. So let's just get back to normal forum business.
