CALL OF DUTY 3![]() Call of Duty 3 is the name of the latest installment in the Call of Duty video game series. It will be released for all three next-generation video game systems: the Xbox 360 (available now), PlayStation 3, and Wii. It will also be released for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Unlike Call of Duty 2, Activision does not plan to release a version for the PC or GameCube. Overview In the July 2006 Edition of Electronic Gaming Monthly, it was revealed that the game will center around the Normandy Breakout. Unlike previous games in the series, the user will play as American, British and for the first time, Canadian and Polish soldiers which are replacing the Russian campaign. It was also confirmed by the magazine that Call of Duty 3 will incorporate a hand to hand combat system, in which enemy soldiers attempt to rip the weapon out of the player's hands. This game will make use of the power of the next-gen consoles with dynamic lighting effects and destructible environments. Online play has also been confirmed, with 24 players able to play at once, a leap from the 8 player capacity on the Xbox 360's Call of Duty 2. The online play, as well as offline, will also have vehicles similar to Call of Duty: United Offensive, the expansion pack to Call of Duty for the PC. These vehicles include tanks, jeeps, motorcycles (with sidecars) and large trucks with mounted weapons. The Wii version will not have online play, or offline multiplayer. It will, however make use of the console's unique controller to aim, and do "battle actions", such as hand to hand combat and fighting an enemy for a weapon. The PlayStation 3 controller will make use of motion detection for some actions as well. It is reported that Activision announced that Call of Duty 3 will be a launch title for Wii at Activate Asia 2006 (however it will not be available with multiplayer). An interesting detail to note is that Doyle and Major Ingram return from Call of Duty and Call of Duty: United Offensive. Their opening mission proceeds a lot like CoD:UO in that their plane gets shot down and they're recovered by the local resistance. Gameplay Multiplayer modes Battle - Standard Deathmatch. No class abilities apply. Team Battle - Team Deathmatch, class abilities are available. CTF - Capture the flag, with some differences to the traditional formula: while carrying the flag, players are unable to fire their weapon. However a melee attack can be performed with the flag. The flag can also be dropped in order to use weapons. Class abilities are available in this mode. 1 CTF - The same as CTF, except there is one neutral flag in the center of the map. It must be carried to the enemy's base to score a point. War - This mode is similar to Domination in United Offensive. There are maps with 3 or 5 control points marked by flags on the map. Teams start out half the flags on map, with the odd flag neutral. Each team must attempt to raise their own flag at each point. The team who controls all points will win. Headquarters - The same rules as previous Call of Duty games apply, with some small changes. Players can now respawn after dying. After each death, 30 seconds is added to the respawn timer. In addition, the time required to successfully defend an HQ has been reduced to 90 seconds. Multiplayer Guns Pistols American: M1911A1 Colt .45 German: Walther P 38 Submachine Guns American: M1A1 Thompson German: MP-40 Sten MkII Automatic Rifles/Light Machine Guns American: M1918A2 BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) German: MP-44 Bren Lmg Rifles and Shotguns American: M1 Garand German: Karabiner 98k Lee Infield Winchester M1897 Trench Gun Sniper Rifles American: M1903A4 Springfield German: Scoped Karabiner 98k Lee Enfield Heavy Machine Guns American: Browning M1919A4 German: MG42 Anti-Tank Weapons American: M9A1 Bazooka German: Panzerschreck Multiplayer classes Players can fight on either the Allied or Axis side, each with 7 player classes: Rifleman, Heavy Assault, Light Assault, Medic, Scout, Support, and Anti-Armor. Each class has its own unique abilities, such as medics being able to heal teammates and scouts calling in artillery strikes. There are also ranks in the game. In most games there is a normal rank system, which has 3 levels. The rank increases when you capture bases or kill enemies, which will give you special benefits such as more damaging artillery strikes if you are a scout. The rank lasts only one game, and your rank will be reset for the next game. There is also TrueSkill ranking, which ranks your skill anywhere from Private all the way up to General. Vehicles Sherman Tank - Armed with a 75 MM Gun Crew:2 (Machinegunner+Gunner/Driver) Panzer IV - Armed with a 75 MM Gun Crew:2(Machinegunner+gunner/driver) Jeep - Armed with .50 cal Crew:3(Gunner+Driver+Passenger) Horch - Armed wih Mg 42 Crew:3(Gunner+Driver+Passenger) BMW - No weapon Crew:2(Driver/passenger) Harley - No weapon Crew:2 (Driver/passenger) Criticisms Call of Duty 3 has already drawn some controversy on the Internet among fans of the franchise. The most common complaint about the game is Activision's decision to forego developing a PC version, a choice which has not only angered many long-time fans of the game, but has also resulted in the creation of a number of Internet petitions advocating a PC release. Another criticism, as mentioned by reviews, was that the Wii version of the game has no multiplayer mode. The reviewers deemed this unacceptable as both the Call of Duty franchise and the Wii console are both known for their multiplayer capabilities. Another criticism which has arisen on Internet forums concerns the lack of a French campaign, as it was the French 2nd Armored Division that liberated Paris, the military action which forms the game's finale. There are also quite a few issues with the current state of the multiplayer game, leading to the Xbox 360 locking up, or the game booting players from the lobby as the match begins. Furthermore, many have reported only being able to play "player" matches and not the "ranked" matches. Also, multiplayer users have reported the "no game sessions are available" error despite a large array of available games to join. Another problem during on-line play is when joining a game as a guest of the Xbox Live account holder, the guests character sometimes starts side ways. Respawning will correct the problem. Rumours are now going around the Internet that a Multiplayer patch is due to be released soon. This patch will fix the "No Game Sessions found Problem". This problem seems to only occur for people who have a router. Many gamers who have a router have no problems with other games even with their Xbox 360 ports open
