In the next-gen console race, there are three main competitors: Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. While many would love to see someone come out with some sort of "Everybody is a winner, hooray!" scenario, the simple truth is one company is going to be declared the loser. Though the finish line is still far down the road, industry analysts are already predicting who will break the tape and who will bring up the rear. Sony has clearly been the favorite in recent years thanks to the unparalleled success of its PlayStation and PlayStation 2, but one analyst firm believes that the company may tumble down from the top of the heap. In a memo sent out today, San Diego-based DFC Intelligence explained how Sony could go from first to worst. Though the memo contains the disclaimer that the prediction is "only one of several possible scenarios," DFC appears to be leaning towards Microsoft and Nintendo coming out on top through the next generation. The main reason DFC sees a slide for Sony is the $600 price tag on the high-end version of the PlayStation 3. Though Sony has touted the machine as inexpensive relative to the hardware contained within it, DFC doesn't think consumers will see it that way. "Sony has done very little to justify why the system is worth a premium price for consumers that don't care about raw hardware performance and are not hard-core audio/visual consumers," DFC said. "Unfortunately we believe that represents over 90% of the consumers in the marketplace." DFC recognizes that software plays a large part in buyers' decisions, and points out that the PS2 was so successful because of its diverse portfolio of games and large third-party support. The broad range of software made the PS2 "a complete entertainment system for the family priced under $300," said DFC. "With the PlayStation 3 the company is going after the high-end power user. It is almost as if Coca-Cola not only decided to go with a new formula, but also decided to exit the low-brow soft-drink business to go into high-end wines," DFC explains. "Of course, there is a market for high-end products but it is 1) a very different consumer type and 2) not nearly as big as the blue collar mass market. Wal-Mart sells more toys than FAO Schwartz and McDonald's sells more beef than Ruth's Chris Steak House." There doesn't seem to be much of an easy way to right the ship, either. According to DFC, Sony may have drastically underestimated the competition and will have a lot of trouble cutting the price, particularly in time for the critical 2007 holiday season. "A $600 price point is okay for launch but it will not fly in holiday 2007. If Sony wants to drive unit volume 2007 needs to be not only the year of price cuts, but the year of drastic price cuts. There is going to be a shakeup in the video game industry and even if Sony executes perfectly there could be a new market leader in two years." http://www.gamespot.com/news/6153458.html |

Quoted for extreme emphasis. If Sony downgrades its hardware a touch, and downgrades the price a lot, they'll come out ahead. Microsoft should be worried. They suck at games in the first place. (Stick to computers, you dicks.) |

So, who really cares about this "console war" if the only thing you're going to do is actually purchase the one that appeals to you most? I mean really is anyone taking some sort of bet on which will end up "last"? Because that's the only reason I can think of of why it would matter. (Other than immature 13year old 'geek pride' in <insert name of console here>) I mean if the Ps3's fate is really going to end up like the Dreamcast (just summing up and paraphasing all the arguments/theories I've read about the Ps3 and just assuming that I'd end up like the Dreamcast) I guess I'll just have to get one before they stop producing them. |

I know I haven't been the best. I know what I've done. Please let me vindicate myself. I've been dying on the inside, never showing on the outside. I've been crying for so long and never tears can produce because they've all been spent upon you. Every moment fades and it transitions into thoughts of you. Life, death; both are synonyms without you. This unbearable pain, I now understand-please let me mend those pieces of the heart I've shattered with all I can and show you who I really am . . . -I love you and I always have. %mh%10%mh% | |

Nintendo Wii is coming out on top, I guarantee it. The Wii has functions like: 1. You don't have to be a gamer even to play! 2. Innovative controller is spectacular. You can interact with a game. How cool is that? It's wonderful! Pointing at a screen like you have a gun and shoot. Swing a baseball bat. Shoot flaming arrows that pillage into monsters chests on ZELDA 3. Nintendo has the best franchises, Mario, Sonic, Zelda, Metroid Prime, etc.!!! 4. Extremly low price for a brandy new console XD. Could be as low as $200. 5. If you are a gamer, you can still buy the system!!! More reasons are: 1. Xbox 360 pretty much only has Halo which sucks anyway because I played it for awhile once. 2. Ps3 is way too expensive, even though I will most likey have a Wii and a PS3 by the end of 2007. |

The Wii costs less than the other systems dsmike, why do you want to get both, you still need money for controllers, games, Memory Cards, and some other things. Still think you'll get both by the end of 2007? |

His parents will probably get it for him for Christmas or whatnot, like they did for me. I feel bad having them buy me all those games and systems and all... Now that I work for myself, I feel so guilty. These things cost money. Think about your parents, everyone. :( |

No, guys, I work for these systems. Me and my sibling buy these systems. I have over one-hundred dollars to EBgames in giftcards. Sell my GameCube, games, controllers, memorycards, PS2, controllers, memorycards, games. I have over $450 at that point. My sibling and I will pay for the rest, and then my parents will hardly put in any money. Sibling: PS3 Me: Wii We can both play the systems then. Genious. Holy cow, burned was banned? Wow, didn't know that. |
