Laugh at this game box. Laugh at the number of FFCC copies left on the racks at every game shop who still has gamecube games on display. Notice the smirk on the Gamestop employee's face when he manages to sell a copy of this game. The only people who will like this game are the ones trying to convince themselves that a game with the Square-Enix logo on it cannot be bad. But the cold, harsh truth is that this game is a piece of shit with the name FINAL FANTASY strapped on it to increase sales and nothing more.

The Story
Alright, so in Crystal Chronicles (let's not continue this travesty, this is not a Final Fantasy game), the whole world is is covered in "miasma", some sort of air harmful to living creatures. Fortunately, some big anti-miasma crystals exist in each village, protecting them and their inhabitants from harm. There's a catch though : every year, these crystals have to be recharged with energy, or they'll stop working. So every year, each village sends out a caravan of teenagers to collect Myrrh drops from strange trees to recharge the crystals. You act as one of those teenagers.

The Gameplay
Here's the first catch and the first reason this game sucked as much as it did. You need GBAs and cables to use the multiplayer mode. Anyway, you start off by naming the town you're from, you choose a character, and...your parents job which plays close to no role in the game except set up shops in your hometown. Great, you can finally enter the first level right? Nope, here are some more constraints. Since the world is filled with evil miasma, you must carry the Crystal Chalice with you at all times. If you're in single player and haven't burned the game yet, you'll get a Moogle to carry the chalice for you and complain every 5 minutes that it's your turn to carry it (you cannot attack while carrying it). If you're in multiplayer, then one of the players will have to carry the chalice and thus will complain in real life about not being able to do anything. Now, not only do you HAVE to carry the chalice, but it also restricts your movements a LOT. If you get out of the area of the chalice, you start losing health (you don't have any to spare).

The fighting system sucks horribly. This is real time fighting. You have two main physical attacks, a combo of weak attacks that do not stun the enemy, so they can actually hit you, and a strong, charge-requiring attack, which stuns the enemy. After a while, you forget you have the combo, since it sucks horribly and leaves you open. This makes the game E-X-T-R-E-M-E-L-Y REPETITIVE. Hold A, aim at the enemy, release A, repeat. This is Crystal Chronicles in a nutshell.

But wait, you can learn magic can't you? Nope. Magic is found in the form of orbs enemies drop after getting killed. Find many of the same kind and you can merge them together and make a stronger one, like Fire and Fire will make Fira magic. There's another problem here. Attack magic is worthless unless you find 3 orbs of a kind and get something like Firaga.

In the levels, you find Artifacts. At the end of a level, you'll get to choose one of them and it'll increase a certain stat. There's also a food system, but you never run out of food anyway so it's fine. There are also Boss battles, but bosses are just bigger monsters who need more charged-up attacks used on them to die.

The Controls
Hold A, aim at the enemy and release. Repeat.

The Graphics
The graphics are average. There's nothing revolutionary here. This is the only category that gets points since it's the only thing the conceptors didn't get completely wrong.

The Audio
Remember FF6's awesome soundtrack? Remember One Winged Angel? Here you get elevator music. Don't think you'll get anything else.

This game gets a

0.5/10

And that's for the graphics and nothing else. Even if you see it for 2 bucks, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. ANYTHING ELSE (except Phantasy Star Universe) is a better investment.
