This Review, well, it probably won't be finished for a very long time, although I hope that isn't the case, it's just - there is so much I want to cover, to try to make my case for this being the best game in existence in the MMORPG genre. (At least to myself xD)

**

--

Overview

Silkroad Online (SRO) is a fantasy style MMO, which tries to model the ancient Chinese silkroad. The basic premise of the game is based on a "triangular conflict" in which players can choose to be either a merchant, thief, or hunter, and either try to transport goods from town to town, or try to steal goods from other players. (I'll get more into this later).

Graphics

Characters -
When you start out with this game, you can choose to be either Chinese, or European and you can customize your character a fair bit. What your character looks like really has no effect on how it will preform in-game.

European characters, generally can do a LOT more damage than Chinese, but they have a 15 second potion use delay, (which, chinese don't have any potion use delay). This is kind of unfair to chinese, especially in PVP since any european cleric could 1-hit any chinese character, where as a chinese would have to be a specific build to do that.

Builds -
Whenever you level up, you get 3 stat points which you can either put into your STR (which gives you more HP, and makes your physical attacks/defense stronger) or you can put into your INT (which gives you more MP, and makes your magical attacks/defense stronger). Most people try to do either pure STR or pure INT, because it will max out either your phy attacks, or your mag attacks. Hybrids are also popular, because they can get the best of both worlds; they can do a relatively damaging mag attack, and still hit hard with physical attacks.

[Possibly might expand this section later]

Attacks -
The attacks you can use really depend on how you choose to make your build, and what weapon you have. If you are a pure int, you probably want a weapon with a high magical attack, and you probably will use "nukes" (mag attacks).

(my char is a hybrid int nuker)

Weapons -
If you are Chinese, you can choose to have either a: bow, glaive, sword (or blade) & shield, spear.

Europeans have many more weapons: 2-handed sword, 1-handed sword & shield, warlock rod, cleric rod, crossbow, harp, or dual axes.

The weapons are separated by degree, and there are 3 tiers to each degree. First degree is lv 1-7 weapons, second is lv 8-15, 9'th degree is 76-85 weapons, etc... And the different tiers are different sub-divisions within the tiers. Weapons have many different stats, and each kind of weapon has its strengths and weaknesses which can be manipulated through alchemy (which I will get into later).

Environment -
Having not tried many other MMO's, I can't be a good, non-biased judge of graphic comparisons between different games. (All the Screenshots I have posted here are with the graphics turned all the way down, and they still look amazing.)

The environments you can go through while walking across the map can be anything from a desert to a city covered in ice.

I'm not going to post one of every kind of environment, there are hundreds.

Gameplay

Grinding -
Simply put, the game is a grindfest. It took me a year and a half to get from 1-73, and that was playing an average of maybe... 4-6 hours per day during that period (not kidding) Of course, not all of the game was grinding, but some of it was. Oh! But you're probably wondering what the quests are like! Expect "Kill 1,500" or "Collect 1,000" quests along the way, that's really the only kind of quest there is in this game. Completing a quest MIGHT give you 4% to the next level, it can vary.

PVP -
After level 20, you can put on a cape, and go out to any place on the map and pvp against other people wearing a cape. (not much to describe here... you basically can compare your character with other people's characters.)

Triangular Conflict -
As described earlier, you can choose to be a hunter, a thief, or a merchant (trader). Traders have to transport goods from town to town. In doing this, they gain a fair amount of cash from selling the goods. The trader can choose how many goods he would like to take... obviously, taking as many goods as your transport can hold would be more expensive, and there would be more risk of getting robbed. The difficulty of trades ranges from 1* to 5*s, but despite this just being a numerical value, it will decide how many npc thieves will spawn on your journey.

I dont have many screens of a ton of NPC thieves spawning at once, because it's so hectic when it happens... I might try to get a better Screenshot later.

A 1* trade might spawn 1-4 thieves at once, maybe, once every minute or 2, where as a 5* trade could spawn 30-50 thieves at once, and at the same rate. Seeing as the thieves that spawn match the level of the trader, it can get extremely difficult to get 5* trades from town to town with a high level trader... you could get 30-50 lv 95 thieves spawning off of a lv 90 trader O_o (Which is where hunters come in.)

A hunters job is to help the trader transport the goods, basically, they kill the NPC thieves, as well as any player thieves which might come up.

Thieves have to try to find the traders, and kill everyone in the party so they can steal the goods. They then have to use a special kind of scroll, which takes 10 minutes to load... if they make it the entire 10 minutes without the traders/hunters coming back, they get transported to the thief town at which they can sell the stolen goods for LOADS of gold. The hardest part of the thief's job is to try and hide their transport after they steal the goods. I think thieving is probably the hardest job, because in most cases, you are 1 thief against an entire party of hunters/traders (8 people).

Job wars can get extremely fun when you get a few parties going on either side with a few trades... you get ~20 people involved it gets amazing. There are also people who stand outside of town, and basically use their job suits for PVP, which is pathetic, IMO.

2 european chars PVPing in their job suits.

Alchemy-

Market

Sound (Music)

Issues I have with SRO

Customer Service
Botting
Gold-Buying
Other
