Final Fantasy IX

Overview
You are Zidane, a boy (with a monkey tail!) involved in a gang of thieves known as Tantalus. Your mission: to kidnap the Princess of Alexandria, one of the four great nations of the Mist Continent. What you don't realize is that there is far more at play here than just a missing for abduction...and it will soon affect the entire world.

This is just the beginning of Final Fantasy IX, released in 2000. It's a bit dated, but it's still well-worth the 30-40 hours required to finish it. Let's get started.

Graphics: 9.0/10.0
As of 2000, FFIX was a turning point in graphics when it came to RPGs. Lush environments and hundreds upon thousands of NPCs flourished and frolicked throughout the game. Many of the environments also had rough spots, but the true look of the game was wonderful. The FMVs seen throughout the game were also top-notch, and absolute eye-candy.

Sound: 10.0/10.0
The game's soundtrack spanned about 110 songs. While that sounds like a lot, playing through the game made the music seem as if it were naturally in the environments. Each piece fit the scene it was placed to, from simple songs to highly orchestrated upbeat tunes. Truly magnificent.

Storyline: 9.9/10.0
Wow. Simply wow. FFIX's storyline was probably one of the greatest I've ever had the oppurtunity to play. The small point deduction is for a partial lack of originality on the plot; some people argue it is very similar to FFVII's in certain ways, but I won't spoil anything, and in my honest opinion it's very different. Otherwise, the game's story is one worth remembering, with many touching moments, and a fair share of laugh-out-loud moments as well.

Control: 8.5/10.0
The one slight downside to this game was the controls. While it was still very basic (especially considering it mimics many other FF games), some of the menus were simply very tedious, and it sometimes the battles were moreso a battle of menus than a battle between the characters and the monsters. However, it retained the feel of the FF games before and after it.

Final Score: 9.5/10.0
Final Fantasy IX is one of those games that keeps you interested. You can play straight through the game and defeat the final boss (who isn't a pushover, I might add) in around 30-40 hours. However, much like Tales of Symphonia, there seem to be endless sidequests and secrets to be found everywhere throughout the entire game; in fact, a person could probably play nearly 100 hours and not finish everything. This game is definitely worth picking up wherever you can find it, as it rivals the top RPGs of all time (including the acclaimed FFVII).

Good review. I'd have to agree, FFIX was a sweet game, one of the best in Final Fantasy's run. :D
