If you have ever been interested in racing games, they are probably one of the only genres to have not changed so drastically. From the hit Atari game Pole Position, to Gran Turismo 4, its not much of a change over the years. One landmark game, however, came out for the Super NES. That game was Top Gear.

Top Gear was not like other racing games. It had an arcade mode that was awesome. You played through 8 countries, 4 courses per country. There were three difficulty modes to choose from. You also had four cars to choose from, each with different specs. You could switch between manual and automatic gear shift. You even entered in your own player names. This may sound very good already, but the game even had a 2-player mode. In addition, the game had significantly good graphics.

The soundtrack of Top Gear is signifigant for such a short soundtrack. There are only 5 songs in the entire game. These are the title/menu theme and the four level themes. The songs are very good, and the menu theme has even managed to sneak into a pop song. "Bliss" by Muse.

Overall, Top Gear is a very good game, and definitely in my Top 10 SNES games. The game can be either easy or hard, depending on your option settings.

Compared to Super NES standards
Graphics: 9.5/10
Music: 9/10
Gameplay: 9.5/10
Story: ?/10 Racing games don't really have a story
Total: 9.33/10
