Thoughts on Super Mario Galaxy; And the coin I got when I bought it.

I_ROCK_AT_LIFE

Now, I've been hearing for a long time that Super Mario Galaxy is "Everything you loved about Super Mario 64 and nothing you hated about Sunshine.". Of course, I liked every bit of Sunshine and none of it, because I liked it very much. A lot of it had to do with the graphics, those dudes down in Japan with names I can't pronounce did an absolutely fabulous job, on both the technical and artistic side of Sunshine in my opinion. Sunshine was my first game when I got my GameCube, and I played it to full capacity.

Well, today I decided to pick up Galaxy for whatever reason. I wasn't to exited when I heard about it, I was honestly more like "Eh, it's just another Mario game.". Today though, I decided to pick it up and give it an hour and a half of play, and when I went to target, I got the commemerative coin that is supposed to only come with presales. They had a ton of them though. But that's beside the point of this article.

I played Galaxy, and for the opening cut seen, after the the story board, when Bowser came and attacked the mushroom kingdom, my first reaction was a lot along the lines of "Ooohh...it's so pretty! Even on a crappy composite TV like mine it's so pretty!". I can see why it got so many raves from critics about it's artistic direction, even though my TV produces a cloudy set of pixels, the detail of all of the character models and environments come through with eye catching fidelity, and the lighting...that's just the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen (I think it may be better than a lot of high budget games on the 360).

One of the things that got me addicted to Mario was it's comical aspect. That's what is so great about Mario games in my opinion, it's so comical, that even if there is a hard level you can't beat, you just can't help but enjoy yourself because it's so funny. I kept laughing everytime I fell off the waterway when I was riding the rays, and even though it took me a long time to beat that star, I still enjoyed myself. Yes, I enjoyed myself despite losing at least 8 lives on that one star. This takes the stress out of gaming without making it not challenging to me. I felt the same way about Sunshine, 64, and World for SNES. They were all just so comical, it was impossible to get frustrated when you died.

Needless to say, this made the Mario series for me, and Galaxy brought it over beautifully.

Some of the camera angles are a little dizzying, but that's part of the fun of it. There is no direction in space, and it looks like Nintendo wanted to convey that element, and they did it to a T in my opinion. It made for some interesting coursework, and indeed, that gravity system that governs Marios movements through the environment is far more difficult to make happen than a traditional game engine, and it may just be the most evolutionary, and revolutionary idea in platfrom gaming. It's probably the best idea thought up actually, it makes me picture that drawing of a room with stairways going at all angles, Mario Galaxy makes that an absolutely brilliant platforming formula.

There is tons more I can say, but I can say I am going to be cherishing this game for a long long time, and anyone who hasn't gotten it...shame on you. Go and get it, you will kick yourself for not buying one sooner.

ok, so htis game has won game of the year on both gamespot and IGN. and yet...i'm still not sure if i want it.

it just looks all cartoony and weird(choo choo trains? cookies? big cakes?) and it looks directed at a younger audience than me....

what do you guys think?

Exactly. It just isn't possible to be 'too old for Mario'. Unless you're 578 1/2.

When I first heard about Mario Galaxy, I was unsure about the concept, being in space and all, but the first time I played it, it definitely changed my mind. The gravity puzzles definitely helped win me over. :) In response to the first post, I agree completely. This game, in my opinion, is the best game available on Wii (not to mention best-looking).

That's because the expectations for Halo 3 were unrealistically high.

But in all honesty, get it. Even though I doubt I can bring myself to get all 120 stars again as Luigi, it's still the best game I've played on the Wii.

Honestly, I was hugely disappointed in Galaxy.

I bought SM64 on the VC about a month or two ago to get myself psyched. Beat that in a few days. I rented Galaxy a week ago, got myself psyched up, and... just didn't want to play.

There was nothing really wrong with it. It was just boring. I have 10 stars I think. I know that's not a lot, but if this is a good game, shouldn't I want to at least play it? Instead, it's sitting on my desk waiting to be returned.

Starbits made me go "bleck," the game felt less responsive for some reason then SM64, and the puzzles merely feel like reshuffled old ones.

I wouldn't reccomend putting down the $50. Rent it, see if you like it. Cause I seem to be the only one that feels this way.

To be, or not to be: that is the question. To die, to sleep; no more; and by a sleep to say we end. To die, to sleep; To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there's the rub. For in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil must give us pause. That makes calamity of so long life, for who would bear the whips and scorns of time when he himself might his quietus make with a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear, to grunt and sweat under a weary life, but that the dread of something after death, the undiscover'd country from whose bourn no traveller returns, puzzles the will and makes us rather bear those ills we have than fly to others that we know not of? Thus conscience does make cowards of us all...
