Luigi’s Mansion

Hi! I’m Linkmaster_233, and this is my first review! I feel that with the arrival of the Wii, the GCN games are starting to become ignored. So, I think it’s time for a look back at some of the classics. Today, I’ll review Luigi’s Mansion for the Nintendo Gamecube.

STORY

Luigi. The green-garbed plumber that has stood in the shadow of Mario for over 20 years. Not anymore! Luigi set out on his first solo game in 2001 when he won a mansion in a contest he didn’t enter. Mario goes to check it out… And he never returns!!! *saw it coming, didn’t you?*

^E. Gadd^

From there on, Luigi met Prof. E. Gadd, who was a crazy old dude living in a shack that caught ghosts and turned them into paintings for a living. So, seeing as he was too old to do the work himself, he gives you hid vacuum, the Poltergust 300, a Game Boy HORROR, and a flashlight and tells you to go catch all of his ghosts. And that’s where it goes south.

That’s it. Sure, there’s a few little shove-alongs, like meeting the Boos and Madame Clairvoya, but the basic principal is this: get the ghost, get the key, repeat.

GAMEPLAY

In an interesting control scheme, Luigi’s Mansion uses two analog sticks for ghost-hunting. (Think along the lines of Call of Duty for the PS2 or Halo) The Control Stick moves Luigi, and the C-Stick moves the flashlight/vacuum. You can turn your flashlight off and on to scare the ghosts by pressing B, and the Game Boy HORROR opens up by pressing X.

What does it lack? A MAP. The only time you get to see the HORROR’s map function is when you get a key. It’s a 3 story house with a basement, and it’s full of ghosts. Yeah, you’ll get lost.

However, the interactivity with the house is unbelievable. You can clean the floors, turn ceiling fans, and even pull toilet paper off the roll. This adds a surprising sense of realism to an unrealistic game.

As with the story, it’s the same old thing here: catch ghost, get key, repeat. There are a few boss ghost fights that are quite enjoyable, but after awhile it gets old catching the same orange ghost over and over. You can suck up cash that can get you a few bonuses, but it is uber hard to get enough to win them.

GRAPHICS

The graphics are actually very nice, especially for a GCN debut game. You can see every little speck of dust in your flashlight’s beam. Also, the graphics don’t slow the game down at all. It justs keeps chuggin’ a-long.

REPLAY VALUE

Yeah… Not much here. After you beat the game, you get to look at all of your ghost portraits, and there’s a ‘Hidden Mansion’ version, too. But it’s the same old chestnut, just in a new wrapper.

FINAL SCORE

All in all, Luigi’s Mansion is pretty good, but the same stuff over and over makes it seem kind of tired. It’s not a bad debut for Luigi’s solo game, but maybe he should have started off with, I dunno, finding a new enemy to fight instead of sucking up ghosts? Hasn’t that already been done before?

Luigi’s Mansion for the GCN gets a 6.7 out of 10.

I might do a couple more reviews. I don’t know. Wait and see. ;D

I gave it a 6.7 for good graphics, easy to handle, and good interactivity.

With me, 5 and below is pretty bad.

Dude! I loved that game, it's the same thing because it's the point of the game! what do tou want them to do? have all the ghosts move out after the first level and have tons of Goombas move in? There wasn't really anything bad about it so I give it a 8.9
