Hey people, we've been noticing this as a recurring problem, so I'm going to bump up an old "rule" we had with this post. This was originally stolen from Invisionfree, so a few terms will be different. But hopefully, you can put two and two together. ______________ Contents: What is Backseat Moderation? What are some basic examples of Backseat Moderation? Why is Backseat Moderation so bad? How can I prevent Backseat Moderation? How can I help the staff without Backseat Moderation? 1. What is Backseat Moderation? Backseat moderation is the term the Invisionfree staff use to describe a person who attempts to moderate a topic in the Support Forums and has no power. To make it simpler: A person is impersonating the staff. They are telling the topic starter or posters what to do or they are pointing out things that they believe are against the rules. 2. What are some basic examples of Backseat Moderation? The most common example of Backseat moderation is a user saying to the topic starter: "This topic is in the wrong place." Another common one is "Read the Board Rules" or "This topic should be closed." 3. Why is Backseat Moderation so bad? Backseat moderation really doesn't sound so bad at first. Its helpful if someone points someone to the board rules or tells them a topic is in the wrong place. Right? WRONG. In many many cases, the topic starter feels offended by the user and tends to attack that person. The Staff members have to put out the fire. Now imagine one or two of these incidents and multiply it by the number or users online and topics everyday. That should give you a rather large number of problems. So to prevent these problems, Jeremy, a former Community Moderator, came up with a simple policy regarding Backseat moderation: Don't do it. 4. How can I prevent Backseat Moderation? If you are in the support forum looking to answer support questions and notice a topic is in the wrong place, send a personal message to a Community Moderator online. Include a link to the topic and where you believe the topic should be. If you see a topic that should be closed, repeat the procedure and tell the staff member why you think the topic should be closed. If you think the topic doesn't belong anywhere or it is offensive, send a message to any staff member who is online. Now if you go in a topic strictly to point out a topic is in the wrong place, DON'T DO IT. If you don't know the answer to the topic and you can not help the person find the answer, do not bother posting. Let someone else who knows answer the topic. 5. How can I help the staff without Backseat Moderation? The Support Forum is a neverending flood that will always have a flurry of questions anyone can answer. If you absolutely, positively know the answer to a support topic, by all means post a detailed answer to the question. If Support isn't your thing, then behave in the community area. Graphics are always needing artists to fill requests. If graphics is something you excel at and you have the time, filling a request or 2 is a great help. If you are a regular lurker and notice a topic or user that is inappropriate, send a personal message to a Community Moderator with a link to the topic or user. And of course if you see a topic needing to be moved, closed or removed, send a message to the staff as explained in question 4. __________________ This isn't an official "rule" persay, but it helps the staff a lot. So please, keep this in mind when posting.

To be, or not to be: that is the question. To die, to sleep; no more; and by a sleep to say we end. To die, to sleep; To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there's the rub. For in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil must give us pause. That makes calamity of so long life, for who would bear the whips and scorns of time when he himself might his quietus make with a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear, to grunt and sweat under a weary life, but that the dread of something after death, the undiscover'd country from whose bourn no traveller returns, puzzles the will and makes us rather bear those ills we have than fly to others that we know not of? Thus conscience does make cowards of us all... | |

Indeed, there has been much backseat moderation as of late. And it kinda bothers me, because some people don't even try to act polite about it. They reply to other members with "Spammer...." Or things like that. |

I admit to memberating/backseat moderating sometimes. I do believe the increase of memberators is because of, well, the influx of spammy members who have no regard for the rules. I've seen a decline in both spam and memberating since the spam rules have been enforced. Coincidence? I think not. Yes, I call it memberating. If you don't like it, oh well. O_o |

I'll admit it; I've done it before. However, I don't think a nudge in the right direction is a bad thing, as long as it's done politely and done as a fellow member. Or more of as a suggestion than an order. For example, if someone asks a question that seems to be in the wrong area, you are able to adequetly answer the question, so you answer it and then politely suggest that topics of this nature fit better in the correct area (whatever that area may be.) Or is that still bad? |

It shouldn't be, it's being a helpful member. InvisionFree's just crazy to jump on those people that point out double posting isn't a good practice, saying "OMG YOU HELP MEMBER YOU BACKSEAT MODERATOR." Sometimes, the line between memberating and being a helpful member is blurred. |

Backseat moderating could be helpful, but not neccessary and annoying to the person being corrected.. |

 This topic should be closed.(...) What about bringing back the thing Krushr(I think) made. Wasn't it called anti spam petition? You could make it 2.0. For example if people blatantly spammed out of spam. they are cut from the list with a reward. |

PM and report. More often than not, people don't listen to members. But they will always submit to us, in one way or another. Clear? |

Clear. Oh, no, doctor, he's flatlining! Anyway, you know some of these people won't listen to the authority either. There wouldn't be memberating if we didn't have people like... well, not gonna flame, we all know who, spamming up an otherwise great board. They go hand in hand. There's been a decline in both since the rules have been enforced. |
