Okami for the Wii

Don't know how much this has been announced since I've been gone all day, but Okami has been confirmed for a Wiimake.

Article here:
(I have highlighted what I thought was important)

IGN.com

IGN: Has Clover Studios or any of the original Okami team been involved in the conversion? If so, in what capacity?

Didier Malenfant: No, everything was done in-house at Ready At Dawn Studios. We had to make sure we'd be able to do this because with the distance and the time difference with Japan it would have made things a lot more difficult for us to wait on info when we had questions. So in a way, it made things harder in the beginning but the guys we have here are some of the most talented people in the industry and we pulled it off without a problem.

IGN: What has been the biggest challenge when converting the game for Wii?

Didier Malenfant: The biggest challenge for us is that, because of time constraints, we did not use the Ready At Dawn Engine to port the game. Instead we ported Clover's code and assets directly. In these cases it's always tough to work with code that you're not familiar with, especially with Japanese comments. But after a little while, we knew our way around it like it was our own stuff so it's not causing that much problems now. Of course, converting all the assets and making sure they're optimized for the Wii is also very time consuming. It's just all worth it when you see the game come up on the Wii screen for the first time.

IGN: How have the graphics been enhanced?

Didier Malenfant: Okami is a total passion-project for both Ready At Dawn and Capcom. When we first discussed it with them, two things were very clear right off the bat: Firstly, taking after a studio like Clover is some pretty big shoes to fill, something everyone here is very comfortable with given our past projects. Second, this game is such a masterpiece in its own right that we had to do everything we can to reproduce the experience that players had on the PS2 as closely as possible. To this day the graphics of Okami are some of the most awe-inspiring ever seen in a video-game and I know it sounds cliche but you don't want to fix something that's not broken.

IGN: How do the Wii controls work with the game's painting system? Will there be enhanced functionality?

Didier Malenfant: That's going to be the best part. Okami was made to be played on the Wii. Or maybe the Wii was designed with Okami in mind... I'm not sure. Either way, it's a perfect combination, we use the Wii-mote to control the brush strokes and it feels absolutely awesome. I think people will be shocked when they try it for themselves.

IGN: What new content appears in the game, compared to the PS2 version?

Didier Malenfant: The game on Wii is going to be an exact port of the PS2 version and I think that's what fans of the franchise want to see. This game has such a huge following throughout the world that people would probably send us death-threats if we messed it up by trying to add things that don't have their place in the Okami universe. Being huge fans of the franchise ourselves, we made sure that Capcom also wanted to stay true to the original before signing on to do this.

IGN: Will the Wii version offer anything to those who have completed the original?

Didier Malenfant: Everyone we talk to is saying that they're going to replay this even if they finished the original. The Wii controls are perfect for this game and it makes the game play come to life in so many ways. There are also people who never finished or played the PS2 version and this will be their opportunity to experience Okami the way it was meant to be. This game is a huge milestone in our industry and we're going to give a lot more people a chance to see it for themselves when it comes out on the Wii.

So what do you think?

Personally, I'm thrilled it's going to be on the Wii. I got the game long after I got my Wii and every time I played it I always thought it should have been made for the Wii instead. The game is fun, and the controls decent, but the whole paintbrush scheme fits the Wii a lot better. So I'm excited that developers are taking notice of that and have decided to make it for the Wii.

At the same time, however, I'm disappointed. After reading that it was basically the PS2 version set with Wii controls, I thought, "Oh great. Another PS2 port". I really wish they'd made a sequel instead, or at least can see why RaD is being cautious about changing this game too much. It makes sense to me, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. ^^;;

Anyway, I might pick this up, but I'll probably wait for a price drop. As I said earlier, I DO have the PS2 version of the game, and I'm not even done yet, so it doesn't make much sense for me to buy it brand new. But I'm still really interested in getting it, mainly just to have fun with the paintbrush XD

Hah, couldn't agree more.

I never got my hands on a PS2, and therefore, never got my hands on Okami. Obviously, the game opened to critical acclaim everywhere. (I think it got IGN's Game of the Year award over Gears of War, Twilight Princess, and Resistance.) But, it didn't sell so well, considering it was on the dated PS2.

So now, this story breaks, as you've related, and I thought it was a sequel. But, then I discovered it was the original Okami. So I thought to myself "Ok, well, updated graphics, more features, Wii controls, I can dig it." And then all of those get shot down, save Wii controls.

Needless to say, I was majorly disappointed.

But, I'll probably still pick it up. Especially if they sell it at a budget price, which I doubt they will.

To be, or not to be: that is the question. To die, to sleep; no more; and by a sleep to say we end. To die, to sleep; To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there's the rub. For in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil must give us pause. That makes calamity of so long life, for who would bear the whips and scorns of time when he himself might his quietus make with a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear, to grunt and sweat under a weary life, but that the dread of something after death, the undiscover'd country from whose bourn no traveller returns, puzzles the will and makes us rather bear those ills we have than fly to others that we know not of? Thus conscience does make cowards of us all...

I saw my friend playing this at camp. It looked pretty cool, and If I have the money, I'll look into when it comes out for the Wii. But if what D2K said about un-updated graphics is true, I will be very disappointed. That's almost a sign of pure laziness, considering it was on PS2. GCN had a better graphic processing than PS2, and now we are talking about the Wii.

Well, as I said in my previous post, I can understand that RaD doesn't really want to mess around with the game other than controls (which is an obvious necessity) since the game is not theirs to begin with; they're simply fans of it.

And I'm not sure if Okami really needs to have its graphics upgraded. Okami doesn't go for the realistic view, it goes more for the artistic look, so changing that might upset the art. It'd be like someone from nowadays trying to add eyebrows on the Mona Lisa because he things it doesn't look realistic without it. Sure, it might make Mona Lisa look better, but you'd be ruining the painter's individual design and creativity by filling in what you think needs filling in. So I can see why they wouldn't want to mess with the graphics. I think they should even out any rough edges, but other than that they should leave the graphics alone.

I'll just be happy as long as the load times aren't as retarded as they are in the PS2 version... PS2 loading depresses me at times, and Okami is no exception.

Still, they could add some nice features that wouldn't mess with the formula. 480p, 16:9 widescreen, up the frame-rate and such. All could be done without "messing" with the formula.

And since Clover Studios went under, maybe thye could find some of the people to do freelance work on it.

And yes, PS2 loadings time...hehe. My friends and I have many an inside joke about the PS2's loading times.

Well, since IGN kept hyping the game up as one of the Playstation 2's best, maybe the Wii version can get the sales it deserves. Maybe the Nintendo crowd will welcome the game more.

Ah, it's a nice thing I'm not the only one who thinks that way. All of my friends have PS2s, and only PS2s, and they just stare at me when I complain about loading times and say it's my imagination. -_- So it's nice to know I'm not insane. X-x

Yeah...Okami in widescreen would have been great.

It is a lot of fun, and it's a unique perspective playing as a wolf the whole time. Your attitude toward humans is different, and their attitude toward you is different from most adventure games. The adventuring itself is pretty fun since different areas have been affected so on the way to whatever you're supposed to be doing, you'll run into little side fights you can do.

It really DOES feel like Zelda, but imagine playing TP as a wolf the entire time. That's the sort of feel. Even the battles are pretty similar to the battles Link!Wolf fights.
