When I came across this game, I was quite young, perhaps 10. So, when I saw a game that my parents, being very cautious of games, would definitely allow me to play, since it has such an innocent appearance, I was quite thrilled. To think that I could get to play my first MMORPG ever! However, much like an unopened birthday gift, things are not always as they seem. You first start out as a Novice, knowing very little about the world around you. However, after leaving the beginning island, you should by then know about what to do and what you want to become. Until then, it is basically the grind we all know and "love" until level 8 or 10, depending upon your class. This was actually a good thing, since a future Mage would find it ever so annoying to get to extra levels, since their stats will always be weaker in the physical attacking department. Now you may be thinking "How the *Censored!* do I get my job?". Well, it is quite simple and unoriginal: Do the job quest. Now you may be thinking "What do I do? And is it fun?" Again, it is quite simple and unoriginal: You collect items, and no, its not fun. This will basically be how it is for all of your quests really. Whether it is special holiday events, or just another thing to do to get away from the grind for a while, it is all about collecting items. Apparently, these people are far to lazy to do it themselves, so you are their personal gofer. Anyways, There are four starting jobs after Novice: Mage, Thief, Warrior, and Bowman. Talk about creativity, right? Luckily, much like Ragnarok, they have classes after the classes, so it makes it a bit more diverse. The Warrior and Mage have three second classes, while the Theif and Bowman have two. After that, each one has a couple of other classes, however, there is only one after the second pool and so on, making it all simply redundant. As one gains levels, they must then increase their stats. You will know the stats well, because you will probably have been in the customization area for about 30 minutes. But, not because there are so many options, for there are about 3 or so hairstyles you can even get anyways. The real reason? A new character will be spending there time rolling the dice that randomly gives out stats. Allowing people to distrubute their stats freely? That would be to darn easy! Lets make a game that requires players to roll a dice about 5,000 times first before they get stats that don't suck! Can't you just smell the rating? Unnecessary Roleplay Skit of the Day (Brought to you by Malceure and uknowme219) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- uknowme219: "But Malceure, I've heard that it was a fun game that many people play?" Malceure: "Well uknowme219, would you eat several pounds of moldy bread if it was sprinkled with a little sugar?" uknowme219: "ya but i made my charachter really cool I mean just look at his.....what the *censored* you *censored* freaking mushrooms from *censored* ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes, you will be killed by retarded looking mushroom people. But soon you will triumph over them all, right? And what do you fight after that? More of the same mushroom people you have fought to get there! There is a lack of diversity between creatures, usually only differing by a change of shell color or the addition of armor. Also, the map is just as bad, since the place is pretty small. Sure, you can go to places within places, but then you are killed by more mushroom people. If that was bad enough, the combat system is incredibly boring. *Hit, run, hit run, jump, run repeat.* And since you have to grind through the entire game, even when doing quests, you will spend many, many hours using that cycle. Sure, abilities can be nice, but usually they are just as bland, normally a projectile or some sort of enchantment spell allowing you to do more grinding. Now you might be thinking "I'm just going to grind higher ups! That always works! Muahahahaha!". Keep dreaming, since it is impossible to do such a thing without someone helping you, because for some reason, they spawn in so many numbers that you think you are in New York IN a cavern! Prepare yourself with potions, because without them, you are screwed in more ways than one. Last, but definitely not least, is the Cash Shop. You can get many things here, all of them cooler than any item actually in the game. But you need money, so basically you will know who is poor and who is the richest *Censored!* in the joint. One can go so far as even change their chat bubble, as if saying "I'm better than all of you suckers!", with pretty fireworks and streamers coming out of nowhere, because you are gracing everyone with your presence. One nice thing about it is that you can preview your items in a little window nearby, and even control the character within it, so you can pretend that you actually have money. Maple Story, frankly, isn't that wonderful as the box. Inside this birthday gift is a pair of socks, socks covered in a think lacing of garbage. But hey, the package is nice! To bad most people will only stay in the game for that alone. If you play this game, and seen a huge amount of people in the city, that is because they are to sick and tired of grinding on shrooms and overly aggressive piglets. Yet, if you like grinding with cute visuals while collecting a multitude of useless items for NPCs, this game is perfect for you and any friends who like to do the same. In fact, do not even attempt playing this game without friends, because you can't truely play this game without laughing at a person when they are killed by mushroom people. The unwanted gift wrapping on the table after Christmas Eve, I give Maple Story a 79%. |

Hahaha, that was kind of funny.... Good review too. Now I know to stay away from it. |

To be, or not to be: that is the question. To die, to sleep; no more; and by a sleep to say we end. To die, to sleep; To sleep, perchance to dream. Ay, there's the rub. For in that sleep of death what dreams may come when we have shuffled off this mortal coil must give us pause. That makes calamity of so long life, for who would bear the whips and scorns of time when he himself might his quietus make with a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear, to grunt and sweat under a weary life, but that the dread of something after death, the undiscover'd country from whose bourn no traveller returns, puzzles the will and makes us rather bear those ills we have than fly to others that we know not of? Thus conscience does make cowards of us all... | |

This game was a pain. There was way too much expirience grinding and lack of skills for my taste. Great review! |

Agreed. I would recommend this only if the person had zero experience with MMORPGs, and did not want to play a private server of Ragnarok. |

Heh, nice review. Gave me a few good laughs.
I was looking into this game a few years ago... didn't really appeal to me. Guess the only MMORPG for me is still Ragnarok. |

There are many others, so don't worry about having to stick with just one. In fact, if you ever need me to review a MMORPG that you have seen, don't hesitate to ask!

Heh, thanks for the offer. I really don't play MMORPGs anymore though, I haven't in a little over a year. If I ever want to pick them up again, I know who to come to.

Tried it already. Thinking about making a review on it
Trust me, I have played more MMORPGs than most would imagine I do, since I do not speak of it much. On another note, if you can't get into Ragnarok, just play a private server. I have played AnimaRO, GatheringRO, and RebirthRO, which seem to be the most popular of the servers. |

Well then, i have a question for you. Are those privet servers like the real thing or are they just cheap knokoffs? |

Basically, a private server will be just about exactly the same as the actual gameplay of a game, though sometimes with a few extra features. If you want the normal game, then play AnimaRO. If you want to play the normal game with extra features such as increased maximum level and commands, then play RebirthRO. I wouldn't recommend GatheringRO, because there isn't many people in that server. |

Not that I have encountered. Usually, I just go in and play without any issues. It may be that it is under server maintenance. Either way, just wait a bit until the issue is resolved. Once you begin to play, I am sure it will enthrall you.
Enthrall is my word of the week. |
