Finally took on an international game with Canada. Lots of fun when you get past all the waiting time between games. I had the benefit of Hoilett agreeing to play for me, along with Daniel Fernandes and Steven Vitoria (although weren't starters). We scraped into the 2014 World Cup thanks to away goals somehow not applying in the inter-confederation playoff and got a tough draw but I reasoned it would be great for ratings back in Canada with Messi and C. Ronaldo running rings around us. Here's how it all went down: http://i.imgur.com/YczsqS4.jpg The Argentina game saw Messi score after a minute and a half, but we held on and Josh Simpson even hit the bar in the first half. 88th minute, Klukowski bangs in a rebound and we got a point. Going in to the last group game against South Africa, we just needed a draw. Straith scored early but within minutes had an own goal and we lost 3-1. If Argentina beat Portugal though, we'd go through anyways, and Messi duly scored in the 55th in that game... and missed a penalty 10 minutes later. The score held though and we somehow slipped through. Against Spain in the semis, my players were exhausted - two straight overtime periods had hurt us, and there were a number of injuries in the squad. Ended up losing 2-0 despite coping with them for long periods. In the 3rd place game against Argentina we gave a a few starts to squad players and lost 2-0. Annoyingly, Mexico beat Spain 1-0 in the final. Up to 28th in the World rankings after, pleased with that. Thing is, aside from the World Cup I haven't done that well, including some terrible results (5-0 loss in Mexico, 5-2 at home to the US, 5-1 in Kingston) and a quarterfinal exit at the Gold Cup to Belize of all teams (on a penalty). |
