The Revs held on to a slim victory over Houston on Friday night.

Revs Play to 2-1 Victory over Dynamo
________________________________________________________

-The Foxboro Soccer Review-

-Foxboro, MA
The New England Revolution battled to a deserved 2-1 victory over Houston Dynamo on a clear Friday evening at Gillette Stadium. Talking to head coach Paul Serpa postgame, he remarked that bouncing back with a win immediately after losing to Columbus was important.

"We can't hang our heads after a loss," he said, "It's important to get back on the pitch and win games. The loss against Columbus hurt, but wins like this erase the sting of losing."

The Revs responded in this game quickly, scoring just after 4' minutes of play. Juan Agudelo got his 7th goal of the season after taking advantage of mistake made by Houston goalkeeper Tally Hall.

But early in the second half, Houston tied the game with a thumping header by Chris Pontius from a corner kick. However, ever present fullback Chris Tierney scored a beauty of a free kick in the 51' to retake the lead and win the game 2-1.

"Chris has been working hard on his kicks, so it's great to see the practice pay off with a winning goal," said Serpa, "He and the defense really did their part tonight, keeping Houston at bay while trying to protect out 1 goal lead at the end of the game."

Newest Rev signing Diego Chara also got a start tonight. He has been given the #13 jersey. "He played well enough for his debut," continued Serpa, "As he regains his match fitness, he should be a force in the middle."

After winning tonight, New England have climbed into 3rd place ahead of Saturday's games.

Juan Agudelo scored record high 4 goals against the Union

Agudelo Scores 4, Revs Win 5-0
_______________________________________________________

-The Foxboro Soccer Review-

-Foxboro, MA
For the 2nd time in 3 weeks, New England had to face the Eastern Conference leader. Some might have thought before the match that the Revs might struggle as they did against then conference leaders Columbus Crew. Tonight they were wrong.

A close-fought game at Gillette Stadium ended in a one-sided result as New England defeated Philadelphia 5-0. Serpa got good performances from all his players, but this game will be remembered for a remarkable display of goalscoring from New England's Juan Agudelo.

"He really has the quality," said Serpa speaking of the young American forward, "This is why we got him from NY, because on any night he can produce something special like he did tonight against Philly. Obviously, he won't do it every night, so games like this mean so much for the player, the team, and the fans."

It was both of New England's team of strikers that put Philly on the wrong side of the scoreline. Agudelo got things started scoring after 15' from a Benny Feilhaber pass.

"If last year's goalscoring team was Tierney to Soares," remarked Serpa, "Then so far this year it's been Feilhaber to Agudelo."

Saer Sene then scored the 2nd goal, a fine solo effort, putting on a nice move to slip past Philly defenders Wingert and Valdes to bury a goal past the keeper Johnson.

Before the half was over, Agudelo then doubled his goal tally in the 43' by scoring a nice solo effort of his own.

By the 47' Agudelo struck again. A headed ball by Sene fell to Agudelo, who easily scored to pick up his hattrick, as Johnson had come out of his area to deal with Sene's header. It was Agudelo's first hattrick and his 10th goal of the season.

But he wasn't done there. In the 80' Agudelo made it 5-0 with a pass from Sene to complete his 4 goal day and the rout of conference leaders Philadelphia.

"Everyone played exceptional tonight," commented Serpa, "We showed Philly why it's tough being on top of the conference. If you're not prepared to defend your top position, you will not last there very long. Juan had a great night and I wish his continued success this season."

Agudelo appeared 24 times last season for New England scoring 13 goals. With 11 goals in 7 appearances this year, he is en route to break his record in quick fashion.

With the win, the Revs climb back into 3rd place on 8 games this season and sit 2 points back of Philadelphia.

Benny Feilhaber controlled the game with a goal and an assist.

Revs Cruise to 2-0 Win Over Rapids
_______________________________________________________

-The American Soccer Express-

-Commerce City, CO
A highly polished performance by the New England Revolution players saw their team run out 2-0 winners of the Colorado Rapids.

Losing their last 3 and sitting in 7th in the West, Colorado did little to dispel any pregame talk of an upset.

Assistant captain Benny Feilhaber had another excellent game, picking up a goal and an assist to help the Revs win at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

"Benny is a good player, a dynamo in the midfield," head coach Serpa said, "When he plays well, the team plays well."

Feilhaber got the game going in the 22' with a directed long shot into the top corner of the goal. He then set up a goal for Zack Schilawski in the 36' to make the score 2-0. Colorado didn't have many chances to score today, only getting 2 shots on goal. Perk picked up his second start in goal, so there is speculation that Serpa may not be too happy with Gaudette's form.

Also of note is that captain Shalrie Joseph picked up his 244th cap for the Revs and now holds the team record for most caps.

"Shalrie is a massive player for this club," said Serpa, "He has been through it all and to still be playing for the same club at his age is tremendous. Well done to him."

With this win, the Revs have jumped into 1st in the East after Philly tied with Seattle, and Columbus lost to LA.

Revs Trade for Gavin
_________________________________________________________

-The Foxboro Soccer Review-

Dissatisfied with how 30 year old goalkeeper Bill Gaudette has been playing of late, Serpa traded him to Colorado for young midfielder Blair Gavin. This trade corresponds with the re-signing of young keeper Bobby Shuttleworth. Gavin will join up with his new teammates soon and will be able to play for New England's game against Chivas USA.

Gaudette joined the MLS Champions last season on a free transfer. He made 17 appearances for the Revs in 2012.

Sear Sene put the Chivas USA defense to the sword with 4 goals.

New England Cruise to Victory
________________________________________________________

-The Foxboro Soccer Review-

-Carson, CA
A fortnight ago Juan Agudelo scored 4 goals in a 5-0 win over Philadelphia. It seems fellow striker Saer Sene thought he could do just as good. The young French forward scored all the goals in New England's 4-0 rout of Chivas USA.

"What can I say?" remarked head coach Paul Serpa, "He did exceptionally well today. It seems both he and Juan are in fine form, which is good for the team. Last year we couldn't score much from the forward position so for both of them to be this productive is very encouraging going forward in our campaign."

Sene got the game going, scoring just after 2' of play when Dulee Johnson played him a perfect through ball. There weren't many chances for the Revs after that for most of the 1st half, and indeed, Chivas at times looked the more threatening side.

But then the Revs took control. Alston set up another goal for Sene in the 42' to make it 2-0. Then in the 45' Jhon Valencia was sent off for a professional foul on Sene in the box. The forward didn't miss from the spot and celebrated his first hattrick.

The Revs got another penalty when David Lopes tugged Sene down by his shirt, but captain Shalrie Joseph missed, hitting the spotkick off the post. However, Sene was there again in the 88' to score a fine header giving him his 4th goal of the night.

Chivas scored only 5 goals all season going into the game, and with 4 shots on goal tonight, that means the Revs' defense also did their job, with Brian Perk picking up another cleansheet.

"Everyone is doing their part," commented Serpa, "That's how you win games. No player is above his teammates. When everyone plays their role well, the team thrives, games are won, titles are collected."

Revs captain Shalrie Joseph couldn't muster more than a draw against FC Dallas

Dallas Draw with New England
________________________________________________________

-The Foxboro Soccer Review-

-Foxboro, MA
FC Dallas scraped by with a 2-2 draw against New England on Wednesday night. The Revs led the way for most of the match, but some last minute heroics saw the Superhoops steal a point.

"They played til the final whistle," said head coah Serpa, "We had chances to put them away but couldn't. It's disappointing, but fair play to FC Dallas."

Things started off well for New England with Diego Chara setting up Saer Sene with a goal in the 3'. Brek Shea then equalized when he was onside and scored in the 20'. The Revs retook the lead in the 50' when Juan Agudelo scored from point blank range. But Dallas fullback Zach Llyod scored a header from a corner kick in the 88' for the dramatic equalizer.

Ok, sorry guys, but making game by game updates is too exhausting for me at the moment, so from here on out it'll be monthly updates. I like the way the weekly game updates look, but writing them out is mentally tedious, so unless you all really really really want the current layout, I'm switching to the month by month method. Plus it'll make my save go faster. Thanks.

June 2012

This was a long month. We played six games in June and although we didn't lose any games, we lost some points drawing with teams we should have beaten. I was happy that we beat NY and DC United, but the Portland game pissed me off. Kris Boyd took out Barnes while chasing a ball and he scored when the ref should've carded him. Drawing with Chicago was a kick in the teeth when they scored in added time. And then Houston were down to 9 men, but nobody could score. Really frustrating, but we're still in 1st and we survived the month with minimal injury and fatigue.

Ever since we took 1st place we haven't looked back and at the halfway point in the season, things are looking good for us. I added the English leagues so I am now getting updates regularly from the Premiership. I'm looking to move over there once I'm done with my career here in America.

Your game updates were incredible but did seem like quite a bit of work.

Yeah, well I'm thinking of reserving them for games that matter, like playoffs, semifinals etc. But doing one for every single game got monotonous, and really slowed down playing the actual game. But thank you for the kudos! I really appreciate that :)

Thanks Coasterkoa! I'll admit it's kinda hard to do MLS just based on the rules it has, but also the MLS is constantly evolving, so every FM there's something new to reflect actual changes. But all the same it's been fun so far and I hope you readers enjoy it too.

July 2012

A very nice July by us. We win against a tough Richmond side (seems the lower league teams are still kicking MLS butt in the cup....) to advance to the US Cup quarterfinals.

The game against Philly was very satisfying. I am starting to dislike Philly, because Nowak is a real butthead, always commenting how he doesn't like me. We make him eat his words after scoring 4 unanswered goals in the 2nd half to show why we are champions and they are not.

Colorado was a breeze win, they've stunk since they won the league 2 years ago. Portland in the quarterfinal was easier than expected and we won with 3 goals from my midfielders.

Against Kansas, Feilhaber bails us out with a goal from a freekick in added time. This year we haven't had much luck in set pieces like last year when Tierney and Soares tore teams apart from corner kicks. Oh well. We scrape a draw with NY which I can't complain about, except that the referee was card happy, and this time it wasn't Toledo.

All in all a good month. LA and I are keeping ahead of the 2nd place teams, and coming to the latter third of the season, playoffs spots are still up for grabs as of now.

In transfer news (which bugs me in the MLS. I sign players in May, don't get them til July, and in between I forget about them until they show up at my doorstep...) I let Parnaby sign a contract with Ipswhich, knowing that my star draft pick Sean Hughes is ready to be the backup to Alston. I sign Hector Gutierrez and now wonder why, since after getting Chara and Gavin, and now that Cronin is eligible to play, I'm backed up in the midfield department. Stupid delayed transfers.

August 2012

Things are starting to heat up now. In addition to trying to defend both the US Cup and MLS titles, the NACL has now begun and my fixture list just added 8 more games over the rest of the season. And as you can see, we got drawn with NACL 2011 winners Moneterrey. Hang on, things are gonna get bumpy.

The reason for the small win margins is because Juan Agudelo has been out with an injury. Scrambling, I tried to sign Ched Evans as a free agent, but the transfer window closed before I got him, meaning he won't show up until January. So in the past month, I've had to deal with my 2 biggest pet peeves about the MLS: the odd transfers windows, and a season which doesn't match up with the NACL properly.

Anyway, we're still unbeaten in league over 20 games, so no complaints there. Good to get revenge on Vancouver after we lost earlier in the season 5-2. We fought hard in the Monterrey game, just got unlucky in the end. But we're still in a good spot to qualify for the knockout rounds.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Still looking pretty good in 1st and almost ready to qualify for playoffs. I'm impressed that we've only lost 2 this season (knock on wood...) and have done well to only concede 19 goals so far.

Posted Image

Some interesting transfers before the August window shut. Seems now that I've added the English leagues, some MLS teams got some big names to bolster their playoff rosters. I'd just like to know where they got that kind of money to spend! At New England, I only had a budget of 400k to start with!

The good: We had a good month winning all but 1 game. The LA loss came from losing Attakora to a red card early in the game, and Donovan being Donovan, scoring a fantastic goal. Our boys played well for being a man down to LA in LA.

The bad:

Posted Image

Yup, injuries. A long month finally takes a toll on top players. And next month isn't any easier. 8 games total, including the US Cup final. However, we've qualified out of the NACL group with 2 games to go, and we've qualified for the playoffs. But injuries to 3 of my 4 strikers is devastating.

Still top dogs after September. But will these extra games coming affect our squad come playoff time?

Phew! What a way to end the season! We continue our unbeaten streak to the end and manage to win the US Cup with a piecemeal squad in ET. Then having 4 games in 8 days at the end of the month didn't help things, but we surprisingly managed quite well against all odds. The Seattle game was a toss up, could have gone either way, but luckily some good play by my midfielders stole the win. Also good thumping of rivals Chicago to end the season at home.

Posted Image

Here's the final table. We grab the Supporter's Shield Honors with the best record and also managed to outscore LA which is quite remarkable considering they have so many weapons on that squad, whereas my team has little known players outside the Boston area. All in all, I've so far done what I wanted to do this season- repeat US Cup champions, get the best record in the MLS, improve on our record from last year, and be by far the best team all around on paper with most goals scored, fewest given up. Now only two more things remain- another MLS title, and a successful run in the NACL. I'd like to win the NACL before I move on from the MLS, so hopefully after the MLS title race we can rest up and provide a strong push next year against the always strong Mexican sides.
