Ok, Every time I see something about this rejected episode , it bugs me not knowing the truth. I guess I have an issue with disabilities being some what taboo in main media. All there is , is the stero types of wheelchair people or the sever "retard" . I guess having a disability makes me wonder. I mean what was the specific reason of Danny "mehing" the idea. What if it could have been a great ground breaker. I'm wondering if he had a sibling that had a disability or maybe he had some type of one. What is so shameful of that? I'm not hating on him, I'm just down right curious and I want a better answer that "it was too personal" Why was it personal? What if it wasn't about Ed at all? |

Apparently it was 'too realistic'. I can understand that. |

Ed, Edd, 'n' Eddy is, at it's core, a comedy show. It's meant to be funny and not taken seriously, even turning somewhat serious things into something amusing. A fear of needles, for instance. However, things like retardation and mental illness are not funny, and are meant to be taken seriously. It would be kind of insulting if they took that and tried to get a cheap laugh off of it. That's probably why they opted to remove that episode. It just wouldn't fit well with EEnE's comedic atmosphere. |

I'll just copy pasta my response to the question you asked on my EEnE tumblr: It was said in an old interview that the episode was too real, it was never said to be personal to Danny, though. No one at AKA remembers what ‘Special Ed’ was about. Here’s the interview: http://web.archive.org/web/20040630135223/.../dannytalk.html He brings it up out of nowhere while discussing how the writing structure is meant to flow like a child’s day more than a story. Maybe “too real” just means that it didn’t have any story and was just random character interactions. |

No Offense, but this subject is handle too much with kid gloves. Ok, maybe having a disability makes me see the humor in the arrogance of people being so naive. For having no story, are you kidding. I'm sorry, but there have been less. The kids reaction would be easily woven into a story. I mean having Doble-d overreact and lecture the others on how to treat some one, then it could have wound up with him being called into the schools office and being reprimanded for being , I want to say, Smother like. Turning it out to say that nothing should have change at all. I don't know. Just something That I would love to ask Danny. |

I'm confused. Did anyone at AKA actually say that it was an episode about disability or was that just fan speculation? I agree with your perspective, Nazzie. Sometimes I think many people get nervous when discussing differences (race, disability, etc.) and avoid it even though they're exasperating the extent that they topics are "taboo" or uncomfortable. We should be getting better at approaching these topics- especially by differentiating between hateful, mean comments and merely stating the obvious that not all people are the same. :) |

It's just fan speculation, AKA has no memory of what the episode was about (which i think supports my theory that it was too real because it didn't have much of a story). I'm not comfortable with how seriously we're taking the disability theory... |

I think it's one of those cases where a theory was just said so many times that people forget that they're just theories. As for myself, I am very doubtful that it's true. EEnE was never a show about addressing issues. The focused seemed to be on slapstick, non sequiturs, and other fun elements that don't try too hard to have "depth" or be taken too seriously. I don't really know why they would make a one episode exception. :shrug |

Well, if you didn't happen to be around fan communities when it was being discussed, you wouldn't know about it. :shrug I don't know what else we can say on this topic since we don't know anything about the content of the episode. There isn't an awful lot to discuss about it. I'll leave this thread open on the weird off-chance that we might learn something new about it. :) |

Master of Reality
|
The only explanation I heard is the "it was too real" one. Which to me makes some sense, and not some sense. A lot of EEnE feels real. The whole "go to the pool/sprinkler party" one? That's hardcore realism. I think most boys can relate to going to the pool/sprinkler party that the hot girl is hosting and the fear of their suit falling off in front of her. There's a reason we have the "oh I had the dream where I realized I had no pants on". There's a lot of EEnE that's very, very real and yet very, very funny. Which is why I can't get my head around what about it was "too real", unless it was too real in that it was one of those boring things that happen in life. In which case that's just realizing "Huh, this episode is boring." If we assume that it was legitimately about special education from the name (which isn't necessarily true, and I'm not saying it is) we have to keep in mind that not every kid in special ed is disabled. My friend Lucas has no disabilities and was in it because of some reason or another, something to do with his not caring about work when he was younger and the school slapping the ADD label on him in response. So an episode where Eddy is put into the sped room because of him not doing work would hardly be involving disabilities beyond the "But I'm not! I just didn't do my work!" and wanting out of there. Because trust me: that room is like hell on Earth here, because the teachers will coddle you even if you don't need it the moment you step into it. Even if you're straight A's, if you're in there because of a teacher being gone so your class is there for a study hall, they want to walk you through everything anyways. Maybe that's just my school though, dunno. PERSONALLY I think the more likely thing is that it was too real because it was about a boring topic that'd be hard to make funny. |

That one guy from that one show

While this thread is clearly "dead in the water," I had a related idea for a fanfiction of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, in which the Aqua Teens try to find the lost episode. Of course, due to its violent nature, and the fact that the show now switches back and forth between a "TV-14," and a "TV-MA" rating, it would be considered "Fiction MA," and I am not able to post that on fan fiction dot net. |

I don't think that will work. Ted Turner threatened to fire Dave Willis and Matt What's-his-last-name and cancel the show if he ever heard them talking about "Boston" again. And while he may have loosened up over time. What happened in April set us back about 400 years. |
